Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Brands selling throwaway clothing with no thought around sustainability or the environment - Shein, boohoo, temu, my shoppee, etc

Thingything · 12/02/2026 13:30

Interesting all the things listed, I definitely know very stylish people who have beautiful examples of those brands and look amazing and classy. So I think if you can pull it off in your overall style no brand is tacky per se.

Look at Gucci - loads of tacky, knock off stuff. But loads of stylish folk swear by their sunglasses. And some of their trousers (whilst thousands) are beautifully tailored.

Personally I find clothes that fit badly tacky x

Trallala · 12/02/2026 13:31

I bloody love a Boohoo tracksuit, well-made, all cotton and a variety of cuts that that flatter my dumpy figure, and crucially long enough so there's no weird ankle swinging when you're 5'10 (and that's just the regular range; the 'tall' fit must be even longer!).
I'm not snobby about the 'made in China' stuff, M&S and White Stuff and all sorts of less 'tacky' brands manufacture there as well.

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

I work outdoors in winter on film sets and most of the AD’s wear dry robes. The actors, especially if they are in summery clothing are brought their dry robes between sets to keep warm

Just because it was made for one thing doesn’t mean it is tacky if you wear it for other things.
After all why spend money on a dry robe and a coat if one does the same thing as the other.

North Face and Arc’teryx - but then I am a middle aged hill-climbing snob.

More sensibly, I wouldn’t have the confidence that either of those brands would keep me safe and dry on a week’s winter fellwalking in the Lakes which is the more important point.

Can I ask which brands you would recommend please? Love a good winter hike and need some new kit x

No! The whole point of a Dry Robe is that it is designed to put on when you are WET so that you can get changed under it! That is why they are huge and lined in the way that they are. They are not just massive baggy warm coats that you wear on top of dry clothing. The Dry is as in “get dried” not” keeps you dry”.

Why not just wear a normal large warm waterproof coat if you are not getting your underneath clothes wet by doing an activity?

Edited

Exactly. It is a swimming accessory. If I wore a wetsuit or even just the googles to school pick up people would think I was weird.

I can think whatever I like is tacky! Is is a subjective not objective fact.

Anything that screams conspicuous consumption and can I just say finding a good handbag now is the hardest thing in the world

I don’t get this. I do go open water swimming but wear my dry robe other times too as it’s so windproof and warm. I totally get why people who don’t go open water swimming would still find them useful.

Coffeeishot · 12/02/2026 13:38

I’m obviously in the minority, but I’ve never seen a dry robe in real life! I remember seeing Anne from Amandaland in one, but I’ve never witnessed it in real life. Mind you, I don’t go outdoor swimming or stand on a rugby pitch!

My dog walker has a dry robe but she is out in all weathers and it is cold

FairKoala · 12/02/2026 13:39

Apologies to Burberry, but Burberry as it's a well cloned brand, but the cloned ones worn by chavs 🤣
So people you wouldn't expect to see with designer items on, and these people are obvious.
However obvious professionals, or people who look like they can afford it, and context dependant ie upper class cities/towns/places of work etc I don't think it looks trashy. So I think context, person and where in the UK is important as opinions will change.
But quiz and select clothing reminds me of glammed up market stalls selling cheap quality clothing.

A lot of Burberry items you wouldn’t know were Burberry when on

A lot of their coats only have the Burberry plaid as the lining of the coat

Yeap people who go canoeing or any other watersports. I have never had the need to get changed under a tool on the school playground. As I say you don't have to think its tacky. I do.

I always felt like this about Guess!

Mrsblobby88 · 12/02/2026 13:41

these 'lighthearted' threads never really are lighthearted and just give people the freedom to air their judgements about other people. Who cares what other people wear?! You do you and let other people be.

I bet he looks like the Michelin guy.

That is what DH calls him!

Beatriz85 · 12/02/2026 13:43

I think its more about how people wear the items rather than the brands themselves. I once had a co worker ask me to look after her back, and added " you know, its expensive, its from MK and cost £xxx". Since then that brand looks tacky to me

livingthenotebook · 12/02/2026 13:44

Juicy Couture

WhatAreYouDoingSundayBaby · 12/02/2026 13:45

Louis Vuitton for me. In particular the bags and luggage, I think unfortunately the fakes have become so ubiquitous that I just assume any I see are fakes straight away.

I haven’t seen anything Guess in forever. Didn’t know it still existed

greencheetah · 12/02/2026 13:47

Kate Spade is the new Michael Kors.

Pandora isn’t expensive or considered a high end brand so I don’t understand the comments on that. Ditto DKNY.

Canada Goose

Vuitton

I like some CT products, but I like this description more.

(I don't like caramel lattes.)

I was going to post the same thing 🤣

(Also don't have a Stanley cup)

Canada Goose.
Louis Vuitton.
Gucci.

I like the Gucci Flora scents. The bottles are pretty.

Glitterella · 12/02/2026 13:49

I don’t live in the UK so I’m not sure if this applies there.

But some products you could only buy from dedicated retailers, generally own brand shops. Eg Birkenstocks were only available at a Birkenstock store. Now every retailer and department store sells them. They kind of lose their appeal when they become so readily available. I like products that are a little harder to get and you buy them because they aren’t on trend and the quality is a bit of a secret… I also then question the quality of products when they become so mass available. Stanley Cups are another good example of this. As a farming family we have used Stanley as a brand for years and still have a flask that is easily 40 years old…. Now you can buy a Stanley on every street corner but is it the same? North Face is another one… used to be worn as a bit of a niche product by a small group of people who were serious about their outdoor activities and then marketing went wild and now well… I’m not sure I’d take a North Face jacket to the arctic.

But why do you care if people find them warm and comfortable and use them for non swimming purposes??? I am genuinely curious why are people so bothered that other people like to wear them in a way that suits them? I don't own one but they look brilliant for watching the kids football, I'm too scared I get judged for wearing it in the wrong place or is it ok to wear it to the football if I also use it for swimming? Or strictly no other purposes allowed?

The thread is asking the brands people think are tacky... People are allowed to give their opinions 😐
