Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

We're all commenting on Mumnet threads - that is hardly the last bastion of class. I would never discuss stuff like that at a dinner party.

So you're in the closet? I'm quite open about my views as I'm not ashamed of them.

coachinghelp · 12/02/2026 14:28

Pissing myself at the person who said Mini Rodini. WTF. I mean, sure, it IS overpriced but I wouldn't call a literal child wearing a logo-free organic t-shirt with a picture of a sausage dog on it "tacky"

TravelMore · 12/02/2026 14:30

For me it's Holland Cooper. Gone very logo heavy, firmly in the Michael Kors camp for me now.

Yes I'm in the Dryrobe closet whatever that means. God people are wierd.

The people who brought superdry now buy dryrobe 😂

I know this is going to sound snippy but I do really mean it- I think judging people for what they wear is tacky. I think everyone has preferences, but to sit in a circle and discuss what is tacky- I just don't think it's a classy thing to do. I think you have to examine what it is you mean by tacky, and whether it's something to do with social class, income, or something else. Good-hearted people just don't look at someone's clothes and make judgements about them. It just isn't done.

The problem is, I think most people really do display most branding because of an image they want to project, whether that's for tribal identification purposes or as a display of wealth.

Honestly, I find both pretty tacky because - to me - they reek of insecurity and inauthenticity in the vast majority of the examples I encounter in the wild.

Themammy101 · 12/02/2026 13:19

Yes I agree anything really in your face with their branding looks quite tacky. I can’t find the comment now but someone said I seemed in a bad mood or “horrible and snooty” I’m definitely not in a bad mood or snooty! I’m not even friends with those women who was talking about it. I was posting to see what people thought on the subject. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of dry robes had to go google it just now, I don’t think it’s a thing where I’m from perhaps? Central Scotland

I’m in central Scotland and I’ve never seen one either. I had to google to see what they were

Gym gear worn in a faux "I was just on my way to the gym" way.

Especially with a full face of make-up.

How do you know it's faux though and they are, in fact, not on their way to gym? I often run some errands on my way to gym, not going to wear several different outfits because of that.

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

Have you seen the Goldie Looking chain rap ?
:)

I like the Gucci Flora scents. The bottles are pretty.

Those bottles are lovely. I don't know the perfumes themselves, but I'm sure I'd like some.

I think I need to buy an Hermès bag and paint an Aldi logo on it. That would be real classy. 🤣

I literally came right from the Mini Rodini sale site to mumsnet. I'm only sorry they don't do the full range in adult sizes!

Because unless they are constantly at the gym, then it doesn't really make sense to wear it to school drop off AND pick-up every day. And they also then don't go; they go for coffee, then lunch then back to school pick-up!

And who wears heavy make-up to the gym?

Also unless I am really short for time, I slip something over the gym-isest bits.

Sporadica · 12/02/2026 14:52

"Trashy" > anything made out of synthetics or synthetic blends (non-recyclable) when there is not a structural or performance reason for that choice. (E.g., heat-retaining ski pants made of polyester/nylon may be justifiable, an acrylic "fashion" sweater is not).

"Tacky" > subjective, but I'd start with Victoria's Secret and anything else associated with Les Wexner (and Esteé Lauder, if we're extending this to cosmetics/fragrance).

Gowlett · 12/02/2026 14:52

Interesting how folks view Pandora as a tween / teen brand.
To me, it’s the modern day equivalent of a mum gift (bought by tweens / teens, money from dad) like a “Mum” or “Nan” ring from Elizabeth Duke. Then, you buy the beads every birthday etc…

Juicy Couture
Valentino
Armani
Gucci

I always have a wee laugh when I pass Frasers and they have the ridiculous Gucci, slippery type shoes. I often wonder who buys/wears them. A fool and their money springs to mind 😂

I have now!! I am completely vindicated in my views 😀

ForRealViper · 12/02/2026 15:02

I think it's important to say that I judge corporations for selling "tacky" stuff much more than I judge people for buying or wearing it.

Someone wearing a naff, gaudy item isn't nearly as gauche as the company that designs it cynically, makes it cheaply, and pumps out marketing gimmicks to convince people it's desirable.

PeonyPatch · 12/02/2026 15:07

SHEIN, Temu, PLT, Boohoo, New Look, Apricot, Roman… etc all that cheap polyester crap that’s been manufactured in sweat shops and is terrible for the environment. Just bleugh all around!

southerner29 · 12/02/2026 15:08

Oh lord I wear a LOT of Burberry! Interested to know what so many people see as tacky about it? My nice winter coat is Burberry, as are several pairs of jeans, and heels...

I always think of Superdry at tacky but then I was given a 'hand me down' coat that my cousin accidentally shrank and it is so warm that it has seldom been off my back recently. I think it may be just that I don't like the brand name? Sounds more suited to nappies or sanitary towels.

The Gucci flora scents are divine. Recommend Gardenia. I get complimented on it each time I wear it.

Scarfitwere · 12/02/2026 15:11

Adding Moncler to the list

NaeRolls · 12/02/2026 15:13

I know this is meant to be light-hearted and I don't want to appear a grump or holier-than-thou, but I have to be honest I think all brands are tacky, and I dislike the behaviour of people who judge others based on what they wear. I think our culture is too consumerist and we should consider the human misery and suffering that goes into many of the things we buy although many don't know about it as the companies' PR tries to keep it all quiet.

Of course I know there are class distinctions between brands that seem to have been decided collectively by society, eg Birkenstock sandals are considered hip and cool for middle-class people, while the brand that go with 'chav' culture are considered tacky. But this is all just social construction.

Then, there's the snobbery and classism inherent in looking down on people who wear loud, brash clothes with expensive brands on display. I don't do that and I don't like it, but I think I understand it, as some people who grow up in deprived circumstances on the margins of society may feel they get a sense of self-esteem from wearing these clothes.

WalkDontWalk · 12/02/2026 15:13

I had to look up 'dry robe'.

....I'd rather freeze to death.

But why do you care if people find them warm and comfortable and use them for non swimming purposes??? I am genuinely curious why are people so bothered that other people like to wear them in a way that suits them? I don't own one but they look brilliant for watching the kids football, I'm too scared I get judged for wearing it in the wrong place or is it ok to wear it to the football if I also use it for swimming? Or strictly no other purposes allowed?

Quite! I have one (made by Red, not Dry Robe) and whilst I wear it at the beach after swimming, especially after evening swims, it gets more use as a general coat. It has been brilliant this winter as it’s so warm and waterproof - particularly useful when hanging around while other family members take part in park runs!

One of my children is a teacher and she has been very grateful for hers when she is ‘on duty’ at the local railway station for half an hour after school.
