Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Dry robes seem to be a completely different thing to the other stuff people are mentioning.
People wear them for their own comfort not giving a shit what others think, while all the branded stuff is people signalling to others that they have money or whatever.

Maybe people are being a bit too judgy about wearing stuff with logos... I go to ridiculous effort to avoid logos, writing and silly details on my clothes and it is quite hard! I recently replaced a nice speedo swimsuit with the exact same one from John lewis and it now has a bright logo on it grr

No! The whole point of a Dry Robe is that it is designed to put on when you are WET so that you can get changed under it! That is why they are huge and lined in the way that they are. They are not just massive baggy warm coats that you wear on top of dry clothing. The Dry is as in “get dried” not” keeps you dry”.

Why not just wear a normal large warm waterproof coat if you are not getting your underneath clothes wet by doing an activity?

Edited

But all sorts of things are used for alternate uses.

What does it matter if someone uses an item of clothing in a way other than for its marketed use.

I don't understand why it's upsetting some people so.

The head to toe beige/brown/cream skin tight outfits are now tacky. Just so over done

And people look naked...

@QuickPeachPoet and @Dragonflytamer you should check out “Dry Robe Wankers” on FB to see them secretly photographed in the wild.

For me it’s Michael Kors, White Fox, Moschino, Burberry and - weird because it’s insanely expensive - Canada Goose.

Plus anything that regularly ends up in TK Maxx.

Personally, as someone who doesn’t own a dry robe (though I think they look warm so I can’t understand the hate?!) I find it tacky to be so arsed about what someone else is wearing to take the time to take pictures of them without their knowledge, join a Facebook group and then upload pictures of those strangers with the aim to make fun of them.
maybe that’s just me 🤷🏻‍♀️

MissyPants · 12/02/2026 13:15

Apologies to Burberry, but Burberry as it's a well cloned brand, but the cloned ones worn by chavs 🤣
So people you wouldn't expect to see with designer items on, and these people are obvious.
However obvious professionals, or people who look like they can afford it, and context dependant ie upper class cities/towns/places of work etc I don't think it looks trashy. So I think context, person and where in the UK is important as opinions will change.
But quiz and select clothing reminds me of glammed up market stalls selling cheap quality clothing.

InveterateWineDrinker · 12/02/2026 13:15

Any logo which is visible from the other side of a room.

Money shouts, as does credit, but wealth whispers.

dh once made the comment in a horrified way "Bum Juice?" which almost had me needing a swig of Pepto Bismol 😬

😂

Aussiesgettingsmashed · 12/02/2026 13:10

Blu Tack

Now that is very tacky.

Yes the amount is times I’ve done a double take at people in pale brown legging, thinking they had forgotten to put their trousers on that day!

I think it's less that someone is wearing a warm, practical coat - I think we can all get on board with that. But someone wearing a warm, practical coat with the words "DRY ROBE" emblazoned on the back so as everyone knows it's an EXPENSIVE warm, sensible coat... takes away the practically of the item and replaces it with the 'status' symbol of the item.
And people look like wankers in them...

Charlotte Tilbury. It's make up for people who drink caramel lattes.

And it’s utter rubbish!

her adverts are also mega cringe!!

Because Dry Robes are priced expensively due to their specific purpose. If you have no need for the specific purpose you are just paying over the odds for a coat.

cf people who drive Range Rovers in cities.

Themammy101 · 12/02/2026 13:19

Yes I agree anything really in your face with their branding looks quite tacky. I can’t find the comment now but someone said I seemed in a bad mood or “horrible and snooty” I’m definitely not in a bad mood or snooty! I’m not even friends with those women who was talking about it. I was posting to see what people thought on the subject. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of dry robes had to go google it just now, I don’t think it’s a thing where I’m from perhaps? Central Scotland

Any of them that shout their brand at you, however cheap or expensive they might be.

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2026 12:14

This made me laugh. I don't actually mind the products, but the 'darlings!' marketing is so annoying. And I don't drink caramel lattes.

For me, tacky is anything with a brash logo that shouts at you. I like things to be more understated.

I agree, don’t think Charlotte T is bad makeup its her I can’t stand! But I do like caramel latte’s 😂

I think with brands like Gucci/Louis Vuitton/Dior/Armani they do have some more understated beautiful handbags and shoes etc so it’s not that I don’t like the brand it’s just some of the products (mainly the massively logo stuff)

I wouldn’t say I find any brand tacky, I just prefer some over the others, for example MN seem to go mad over Boden or Hobbs and I think a lot of the things are ugly to be blunt, but each to their own!

Are people tricked, though? Everyone knows it’s just affordable trinkets. It’s nice to feel a bit special for half an hour. Nobody in there will be going to Tiffany or Asprey.

Exactly, you’re not going to be enticed to go and have a look if it looks like a £1 shop

Ihateboris · 12/02/2026 13:22

cantthinkofagoodusername1 · 12/02/2026 11:56

For me, it's less the brand but more the brand display. I don't like loud displays of labels. High end fashion brands with their logos all over hoodies, for example.
My preference is quiet luxury.

Yes, exactly this. For example, Balmain do some gorgeous blazers and dresses...beautifully made etc. However, I think the accessories (belt, bags etc) showing the label just looks showy. Also, you're advertising for the company for free! 🤔

Londonmummy66 · 12/02/2026 13:23

febstoptherainplease · 12/02/2026 12:54

The Dry robe hatred is weird - surely they're just a practical way to keep warm or as an extra layer. I think of them in the same way someone would wear wellies or something.

I can't help thinking that there is a very large dose of misogyny and ageism involved in the dryrobe hate. A lot of the original dryrobe purchasers were middle aged women who took to cold water swimming to manage menopause symptoms and to boost their mental health/wellbeing at a vulnerable time in their lives. SO they are fair game......

Blueskies77 · 12/02/2026 13:23

I’m not keen on anything that plasters a big logo over it, I’d rather wear something subtle! I would judge someone with a Michael kors bag mostly due to that horrible hashtag that people used to use on social media #boydonegood yuk!!! And if you look like a chav and wear any designer gear, particularly with big labels all across it then I’ll definitely think that’s tacky!

cafenoirbiscuit · 12/02/2026 13:24

Ophy83 · 12/02/2026 11:53

I don't find any brand tacky as such, but particular items from within the brand may be e.g. a dad on the school run always wears this bright white puffy onesie outfit to walk his dog round the park afterwards. It is no doubt expensive as he is into his brands but also looks completely ridiculous (my view of his clothing choices may also be tainted by the fact that he is a nasty bully who was very threatening to one of my mum friends whose son plays for the same football team as his son).

I might be tempted to sing 'we're walking in the air' from The Snowman when I walked past him

Isthateveryonethen · 12/02/2026 13:25

Michael Kors

AltitudeCheck · 12/02/2026 13:25

Tacky (to me) is wearing an obviously branded version of something that is the same quality as a less expensive version. So I don't sneer at people wearing a changing robe as a coat because they are warm and practical.... but do I eye roll a bit at a Dry Robe / Stanley Cup / White Fox knowing people have paid well over the odds for a product specifically to highlight that they have the money to do so / are following the trend when they actually would be so much better off if they saved the difference.

Anything sold in that Flannels shop

Does that include MaxMara, as that's where I purchased my coat from as it was a really good price in the sale.
