Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

The Dry robe hatred is weird - surely they're just a practical way to keep warm or as an extra layer. I think of them in the same way someone would wear wellies or something.

No! The whole point of a Dry Robe is that it is designed to put on when you are WET so that you can get changed under it! That is why they are huge and lined in the way that they are. They are not just massive baggy warm coats that you wear on top of dry clothing. The Dry is as in “get dried” not” keeps you dry”.

Why not just wear a normal large warm waterproof coat if you are not getting your underneath clothes wet by doing an activity?

Also Pandora seems to be worn by lots of teens as sort of entry level jewellery - they probably don't want to spend a fortune.

Fannyannie · 12/02/2026 12:58

Everyone does it with labels. Even the no label clothes, the higher end labels like Cos and Toast. The car brand you buy , it’s a quiet nod to what you perceive as good taste and not tacky.

Over exposure makes things seem ‘tacky’ . We all like to fit in with our peers and everyone buys to fit in with their crowd. The non ‘tacky’ crew are still very obviously and artfully styled to me. Even when I admire it. 😭

TheBestThingthatAlmostHappened · 12/02/2026 12:58

I don't really think about it when I'm shopping. If it's comfortable, at a decent price point, looks nice and I need it and can afford it, I will buy it.

The only time I think something looks tacky is when I see someone, particularly a child, dressed head to toe in flashy labels. It doesn't matter if it's Adidas or Dolce and Gabbana.

We're not big wearers of designer brands but anything we do have, you can't tell it's that brand unless you know the design, if that makes sense.

Edited

Again because they're practical.

Pandora. Monica Vinader I bought something once and it looked so cheap flimsy and tacky I sent it back. And I usually keep things once once I've bought them. Radley bags.

Again because they're practical.

Practical if you need to get changed out of wet clothes on the beach, yes.

ThePoshUns · 12/02/2026 13:01

Any brand with a conspicuous slogan is tacky imo

FairKoala · 12/02/2026 13:02

Tacky means cheap, badly made and showy

Cheap badly made items are tacky
Brand names on any clothing is tacky
But discreet logos on clothing isn’t
Judging by how many of these brands are supposedly “tacky”.

I very much doubt most people can afford to be “tacky”

3rdtimeinflorida · 12/02/2026 13:02

zavetti coats

Covent · 12/02/2026 13:03

I see Pandora as a tween / teen brand. I don’t see it as tacky just for a younger audience

I actually think it’s quite sweet, as the shopper feels special going in and choosing their item and trinkets. It’s good quality customer service for a low price point.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 12/02/2026 13:03

Pandora
PLT and all that ilk

Juicy Couture, especially with Juicy emblazoned across the arse cheeks.

dh once made the comment in a horrified way "Bum Juice?" which almost had me needing a swig of Pepto Bismol 😬

Old lady question, what's special about Stanley cups? I googled them and can't see they're much different than others of the type! I gather that some children take them to school, if they're lost/pinched I do hope schools are not expected to replace them.

I think they were the first to come out with this 1.2l handled cup, and they went viral after one survived a burnt out vehicle. So as it went viral, the brand just exploded (and were a ridiculous price).

There are 100s of dupes now though, and I do have one (a dupe) and use it. But. I live in a hot country and so it's used for it purpose. I add ice to it each morning and fill it up with water and it just keeps cold all day. Even if I fill it again half way through the day, the ice wouldn't have melted. But I also keeps warm drinks warm.

I doubt that they are really being used for its proper purpose generally, it's more of a accessory to an outfit now it seems.

Soonenough · 12/02/2026 13:05

Anything that does a collaboration with some company to mass produce and reduce price point risks being tacky . Like Michael Kors now . Or Vuitton.

Anything that all the teenagers want as well . Because of the desirability fake versions are quickly produced thus devaluing it like Burberry did . One of the worst phenomena in my area was Pauls Boutique. Think it was shite from the start though .

crascenda · 12/02/2026 13:05

Anything that's not from Primark or Next 😂

Louis Vuitton is the first thing that I thought of, and Golden Goose trainers!

Louis Vuitton is popular with mid level drug dealers ( I have known a couple, though work, not as a customer!) so to me it says "crack dealer"

What a weird thread - so full of snooty judgements!

Mmm. Is that a bit err judgemental.

Furlane · 12/02/2026 13:07

I’m obviously in the minority, but I’ve never seen a dry robe in real life! I remember seeing Anne from Amandaland in one, but I’ve never witnessed it in real life. Mind you, I don’t go outdoor swimming or stand on a rugby pitch!

Chickenwing2 · 12/02/2026 13:07

What a horrible thread full of snobs.

also @VegBoxcaramel lattes are delicious :)

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

I get it but got soaked to the bone this week watching a school match in a duvet coat in the pouring rain and my god did I envy the dry robe [and other cheaper brands] crew in their head to toe waterproofs

Londonmummy66 · 12/02/2026 13:08

Ophy83 · 12/02/2026 11:53

I don't find any brand tacky as such, but particular items from within the brand may be e.g. a dad on the school run always wears this bright white puffy onesie outfit to walk his dog round the park afterwards. It is no doubt expensive as he is into his brands but also looks completely ridiculous (my view of his clothing choices may also be tainted by the fact that he is a nasty bully who was very threatening to one of my mum friends whose son plays for the same football team as his son).

Sounds like the Michelin man - perhaps you and your friend could privately rename him....

crascenda · 12/02/2026 13:09

Designer handbags. More money than brains in the purchasers.

Lifeomars · 12/02/2026 13:10

angelos02 · 12/02/2026 11:59

Anything with a label/brand on is tacky AF. People with money don't need to tell people they have money.

I agree, it is the equivalent of wearing or carrying something with "I've got lots of money" emblazoned on it.

Aussiesgettingsmashed · 12/02/2026 13:10

Blu Tack
