Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

I wear Primark, so what do I know?🤣

NotMeAtAll · 12/02/2026 12:09

Canada Goose.
Louis Vuitton.
Gucci.

BillieWiper · 12/02/2026 12:09

Anything with massive logos all over it.

I know a woman who has loads of really expensive bags but most of them honestly look fake to me because they're so garish.

I guess things like Boohoo, PLT, Ann Summers, Temu etc are tacky it at least they're not thousands of pounds overpriced.

Justgorgeous · 12/02/2026 12:09

Stone Island, Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Hunter wellies

RollOnSunshine · 12/02/2026 12:09

Canada Goose
Juicy Couture
Valentino
Armani
Gucci
Stanley cups

MajorProcrastination · 12/02/2026 12:14

Any visibly obvious brand to be honest. Wearing clothes and accessories that you love and look great on is always better than wearing something emblazoned with a logo.

Belladog1 · 12/02/2026 12:14

Verv · 12/02/2026 12:07

I think large emblazoned logo's are tacky, but its less brand specific for me.
Some brands are nothing but logo, so theyre not of interest, others have a divide between loud logos designed to attract the peacocks, and then a more restrained and classic range, which is fine, as brands need customers, and customers need to be catered to.

I do, unfortunately, have a dry-robe - but it was used for sea dipping, and now its used because i live about 2m from the sea, in scotland, and regularly go out with the dog in the howling rain and wind. I dont mind being a dry robe wanker for that, but i wouldnt wear it out of context.

I'm the same as you with the dry robe.

I used to go wild swimming when I lived at my last house. I bought a really good quality dry robe and used it every weekend at Shingle Street and Felixstowe. But then I moved house, and the wild swimming stopped.

About 2 months ago I took the dogs for a walk in the private field I rent, and it was freezing cold and slightly drizzling and didn't know what to put on. Then I spied the dry robe. Now I wear it every time I walk the mutts as I can load up the pockets with my phone and poo bags and stay lovely and snug. I couldn't care what anyone else thinks.

StrongandNorthern · 12/02/2026 12:14

Not a brand, more a trend - animal print ANYTHING at all (except animals).
Cheap and tacky.

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2026 12:14

VegBox · 12/02/2026 10:30

Charlotte Tilbury. It's make up for people who drink caramel lattes.

This made me laugh. I don't actually mind the products, but the 'darlings!' marketing is so annoying. And I don't drink caramel lattes.

For me, tacky is anything with a brash logo that shouts at you. I like things to be more understated.

DelinquentSnails · 12/02/2026 12:15

I really like Charlotte Tilbury because it is one of the few cruelty free make-up brands you can buy in department stores. Also, the CT lip gloss tastes minty fresh.

I’m such a boring middle class stereotype (all Toast, a house full of oboes and book shop events) that I quite like the idea of something in my life being a bit tacky

Pollyanna87 · 12/02/2026 12:15

ForRealViper · 12/02/2026 11:05

Personally, I find brands which are pretending to be fancier than they really are to be much more tacky than honest cheapo brands.

When I see £40 Pandora trinkets set up in their fancy pink window displays, tricking people into thinking they're walking into a high-end jewellery store - yuck. It's not just tacky, it's exploitative.

I don’t like Pandora but I don’t see the problem with them trying to make their merchandise look nice.

Moncler
Most Italian supercars
Richard Mille
Canada Goose
Cartier

...out of Stanley cups

Old lady question, what's special about Stanley cups? I googled them and can't see they're much different than others of the type! I gather that some children take them to school, if they're lost/pinched I do hope schools are not expected to replace them.

Raintoday2323 · 12/02/2026 12:16

I feel like Ganni will fall into this too, I do however still like some of their things.
Coach bags are also tacky to me now.

HypnoToads · 12/02/2026 12:18

Absolutely do not understand the dry robe hate. They are just big, warm, waterproof coats. They might have been originally designed for using after swimming but doesn't mean they aren't practical for other things. (I don't own one FYI.)

They also look nothing like a bath robe. They have a zip!

To answer original question, only Juicy Couture comes to mind. It takes a brave person to pull off crushed velvet and diamante.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/02/2026 12:18

TBH anything with the brand logo on/all over it, so Louis Vuitton for starters.

And Lacoste. Although it was aeons ago I still remember reading in Jaws one of the characters referring to a two dollar shirt with a twenty dollar* alligator on it - probably after her son was clamouring for one.

*maybe not quite word for word after so long…

Justgorgeous · 12/02/2026 12:19

Oh and Zavetti. All the kids seem to wear it.

Chatterboxy · 12/02/2026 12:20

The Gucci Floral perfume, the awful bottle looks like something from a 1970’s Avon book!

BellesAndGraces · 12/02/2026 12:20

River Island. And i love it.

QuickPeachPoet · 12/02/2026 12:21

TorroFerney · 12/02/2026 11:55

I saw a woman child and dog in matching ones. In Preston city ( I use the term city loosely) centre.

I did too! Doggo looked very proud of himself. Little sausage dog.
I would never get my lab to wear one. He would be very unimpressed. He doesn't want to be a dry robe dog wally😂

Vinvertebrate · 12/02/2026 12:21

@wishingonastar101 I once lived in Mereseyside, where those of us who declined to wear rollers shopping on Saturday morning in Liverpool stood out like sore thumbs! Just, no.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 12/02/2026 12:22

Pandora, Swarovski, Lladro, Michael Kors, Lacoste, Dry Robe, Charlotte Tilbury, Zara, Lulemon.

Anything with an overt label or logo that is designed to be seen.

Crwysmam · 12/02/2026 12:22

Whenever I see “Stanley” on a cup I can’t help thinking of the tartan vacuum flasks my grandparents used for picnicking. There are lots of brands that have become popular with the fashion conscious young that 20-30 yrs ago they would neither heard of or been seen dead in. Barbour and Burberry spring to mind.

I have a 40yr old Barbour jacket, bought for their original purpose, country pursuits. My son wears it ( it was a unisex design) because it has obviously been worn for shooting and beating and has been retreated multiple times so has the authentic colour and smell. Apparently the vintage ones are sought after. Who knew it would be worth more than I paid for it 40 yrs later.

Some brands that were timeless country classics have not faired as well. Hunter wellies are now rubbish. Niche quality products made to last don’t make profits. Mass production after effective marketing is often the downfall of these brands.

I avoid anything that plasters its logo in big letters on the outside. I refuse to advertise their product for free. So no Chanel, Gucci, Christian Dior. A lot of the quality brands use small discrete logos that you can usually remove. But I prefer the small boutique brands because you are less likely to see anyone else wearing them. I like Thought and Part Two knitwear often made of recycled cotton.

Sports wear worn any other time than to play or train for sport is tacky. Although smart joggers are an exception. Definitely no cuffed joggers that are fashionable currently. DS wears Canterbury stadium pants all the time but would refuse the cuffed ones. He won’t wear Jack Willis, Tommy Hilfiger or Superdry. He has tapped into a hoard of vintage Adidas and Nike that my DH refused to throw away from his competitive sports days. We recently cleared out the loft and found a stash of old Levi’s and Ben Sherman.

His prize possession is an old Umbro football training top, he recognised it as an Oasis style top and proudly wore it when he went to one of their concerts last year. He said he had a ton of compliments from the older Oasis fans, although one told him it was the wrong colour, he calmly informed him it was faded because it was original 1990s.

IWetMyPlants · 12/02/2026 12:22

Great dog walking coat though!

Blinkingbother · 12/02/2026 12:23

HelloandThankU · 12/02/2026 10:44

Superdry. Their Japanese slogan, Kyokudo kansō (shinasai)極度乾燥(しなさい), on their products is grammatically awkward and unnatural. A native Japanese speaker wouldn’t use a phrase like this as a slogan. It sounds like a bunch of random words strung together rather than a coherent expression.

You may know this already but it’s clunky because the brand is actually from Gloucestershire not Japan…. It’s a great lesson in brand creation and marketing!

PlumDeNomNomNom · 12/02/2026 11:38

Any brands that claims to be high end but let’s just anybody walk in off the street and make a purchase.

Just why would thy do that? Tacky isn’t even the word of it!

I knew this would be the sort of comment someone would make.

”Anybody off the street” as opposed to what, dare I ask?
