Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Are people tricked, though? Everyone knows it’s just affordable trinkets. It’s nice to feel a bit special for half an hour. Nobody in there will be going to Tiffany or Asprey.

I think they might. DM definitely did.

??????

That’s not a brand.

Dry robe is very much a brand.

Whats wrong with Dryrobe? I've never seen one on someone in the flesh - I've only seen them on photos of actors waiting on set when its cold and raining to cover up the costume and keep them warm before filming.

Aren't they otherwise just used as a cover up after swimming? Why are they tacky?

Please could someone explain....

Because cold water swimmers have decided they own the rights to wear a Dry Robe and that anyone else who wants to take advantage of their properties (warm, waterproof, windproof) for anything else is somehow wrong because....... reasons......... It's all quite odd.

Dunno, but then I've no idea why Waitrose or Chanel are tacky either.

Chanel - because they are easily faked and I just assume anyone with badly filled lips and cheeks with thick black brows is obviously unable to afford to see a really good beautician/aesthetisist so it’s unlikely they would have the spare cash for a genuine Chanel bag.

Makeup and perfume are different because you don’t display your makeup bag when you’re out and about. I suppose if you really wanted to you could write Chanel across your forehead. I know someone who has CC badge ( the ones makeup assistants wear to identify themselves) that she pins onto every outfit. Sh s never worked for Chanel so it’s either a fake or she found it. She doesn’t wear high couture so it’s a bit pointless.

Waitrose - it depends whether you do a full shop or just pop in for a lunchtime meal deal so you can grab a branded bag to use everywhere else. I’m guilty of having Waitrose reusable bags but it’s because they are bigger and fold up really small to fit in my handbag. But we do have 4 Waitrose stores within a 15 mile radius so they are a popular supermarket around here.

OneDaringGreenBiscuit · 12/02/2026 19:35

Anything with logos advertising the company is tacky with very few exceptions. Exceptions are not for 'designer' items. Jeans on the back pocket area such as Levis ok for exception.

AirborneElephant · 12/02/2026 19:36

I find absolutely anything with an overt, obvious logo tacky. Cheap or expensive, doesn’t matter.

They were designed so that you could change on the beach without freezing to death or flashing your bits. My late DSis had one years ago because she lived by the sea and used to belong to the ladies sea swimming club. She also used it for running and cycling events when there were no changing facilities. They are oversized so you can squirm around easily while dressing and undressing. They do look ridiculous used as a raincoat. There are cheaper and smarter alternatives. It’s a bit like wearing a fluffy dressing gown to go shopping.

Why are you "guilty" of using a Waitrose reusable bag? That's what I do. It's very practical.
I've no idea why Waitrose is tacky, it's just a supermarket. Who cares where you buy your loo roll and ketchup?

BeatrizBoniface · 12/02/2026 19:41

Some very odd choices on here, but taste is subjective.

I’d say anything with an obvious brand or logo on it just tells me that someone wants to show off that they have a bit of money. It’s like they say.. money talks, wealth whispers.

I should add I have no money or wealth to speak of😂but at least my clothes are clean and paid for as my Nan used to say!

PlumDeNomNomNom · 12/02/2026 11:38

Any brands that claims to be high end but let’s just anybody walk in off the street and make a purchase.

Just why would thy do that? Tacky isn’t even the word of it!

Shades of that scene in Pretty Woman…

GaIadriel · 12/02/2026 19:48

Amazed to have reached end of first page and not seen The North Face mentioned!

I agree some brands are pretty tacky, but too often the people looking down their noses at them are a bit mumsy looking themselves. And the middle class Boho/floppy haired children/dog with same haircut as children/etc crowd are a bit cringe too.

Sportswear also looks drastically different depending on whether the wearer actually does any sport or is more of a Vicky Pollard type.

Edited

I know why they were invented but I disagree - they are completely suited to being used as a raincoat, and their popularity suggests that actually, people prefer a raincoat to be really loose fitting (I do- they just feel less oppressive somehow and the hood stays up without being tight or blocking your hearing). No-one had ever really designed them like that before, and then Dry Robes came along. Everyone looks ridiculous in them whatever they're doing but I'm not sure anyone thinks they look amaze- they're just a solution to a problem.

I just don't understand why CWS feel the need to be so proprietorial about them- It would be like runners hating on people for wearing Hokas to go to the pub. Who cares? They're just trainers. It's just a warm, waterproof coat like thing.

Brightsky210 · 12/02/2026 19:54

adanola isn’t tacky I agree with the rest though

Nousernameforme · 12/02/2026 19:57

Hilfigure channel gucci burberry, etc hermes but only things with an H on it. Anything with an obvious we've spent money on this dontchaknow lable is cringe and tacky. If you buy for quality and longevity its fine otheriwse i fail to see the point

I agree. It’s normal to shop in Waitrose locally but I suppose if you live 50 miles from one it would look a bit showy.

I think the problem with Dryrobes is that they were designed to allow you to protect your car from wet clothing after swimming or partaking in a sport in the rain. They were not designed to keep you dry, but to stop the water in your kit leaking onto upholstery in the car. DS has a big coat he uses after rugby training. Rather than covering the inside of his car with wet mud he throws his jacket over his kit.

Before he had it I used to have a roll of black bin liners with holes precut for head and arms to protect my car from wet kit.

Now they all have a perfect solution. They are a massive hit in the sporting world but were never designed as rainwear. I suppose this is why those who use them correctly find it funny when people use them as rainwear. Although it makes perfect sense that something designed to keep water in will also keep water out.

Dry robe would be prudent to design a version for rainwear and cash in on the trend.

TH clothes are good quality and I now prefer their jumpers and coats to the ridiculous prices at RL.

Gettingbysomehow · 12/02/2026 20:03

I have never seen a dry robe wanker! Quite a rare species in Somerset which is strange as it rains non stop here.

Troublein · 12/02/2026 20:03

It's not about the brands, although I'm not a fan of anything with a visible label on it, it's about how you wear it, as well as where and when you wear it.

According to mumsnet, anything that lots of people like and is popular is tacky!

How is a CT lipstick any more tacky than any other lipstick? Nobody will know whether you are wearing CT makeup or superdrug own brand!
