Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

??????

That’s not a brand.

Dry Robe is a brand but it's a bit like hoover in that it's now taken on a generic meaning as there are lots of different companies that make copies.

We used to call these prostitute bags - loads of space for carrying around lube, sex toys and wet-wipes. Especially if they were glitzy and embellished with bling.

Goodness knows what you'd make of the rucksack I carry around now

I think Starlight meant that the opinion that "the people who wear a brand meant for X thing in the wrong environment are tacky people" isn't the same as the OP question, which was about brands themselves (presumably regardless of who uses them for what).

There’s a massive camo dry robe here at softplay. It’s not even raining today

Wow where do you live where it's not raining?!

AnotherHormonalWoman · 12/02/2026 18:04

JaquelineHide · 12/02/2026 17:46

Yes, it's pretty horrendous.

Personally, I think scoffing at people for liking certain brands and even having the temerity to think they look expensive! is the height of tackiness. Still, if it makes shallow, insecure people feel a little better about themselves..

JFC it's a casual chat thread on Mumsnet

Are people tricked, though? Everyone knows it’s just affordable trinkets. It’s nice to feel a bit special for half an hour. Nobody in there will be going to Tiffany or Asprey.

Well this is awkward, as my Pandora ring goes on the finger next to my Tiffany ring… and I frequently wear a Pandora bangle and Tiffany necklace in the same outfit…

And? If people were being massively homophobic on a thread, would you say the same? Weak excuse.

Why is it cringe? I used to buy stuff for my kids there. I don’t remember ever seeing anything cringey. It just seemed like a shop to buy a jacket or t shirt in. I’m obviously missing something because it gets mentioned a few times

Its just a bit of a middle aged, middle class, non-descript dad brand. There ere was a time a few years ago where it seemed to be the only brand dads would wear

I think a lot of their stuff is nice, its just such a 'sheep' brand that I wouldn't wear anything with their logo on it

narkyspirit · 12/02/2026 18:15

quite a few brands can come across as 'tacky' some people aspire to own LV, Chanel etc mostly because they have seen the Towie, love island and TikTok lot prancing about in those and other brands, sometimes in much the same way Botox and lip fillers have got popular.

For me though I think anything with a 'shouty' label on it is tacky and is more 'look at me I'm cool'

Big 'Blingy' sunglasses and watches are a definite no as well

EvilNextDoor · 12/02/2026 18:16

Oh shoot I must be the most Tacky Person on mumsnet 😂

My wedding, engagement and eternity ring are from Tiffany, as are my pearls.

My last pair of jeans are from Holland Cooper (I blame my teen for making me go shopping with her)

I have a 10 year old tan Michael Kors Handbag

I don’t have a dry robe I have two bare feet’s version admittedly I wear it on the occasional dog walk.

I also have a Canada goose hoody and coat 😂 and I have been known to pinch said teens white fox tracksuit bottoms.

Good job I don’t give a shit 💩 😂

PithyViewer · 12/02/2026 16:36

Well, I have Revlon and L'Oreal lipsticks and CT lipsticks, and hers last for hours whereas the others are vastly thinner and less long-wearing.

Beauty editors and consumers mostly find her stuff to be very high-quality.

Do you have any evidence that CT is white label? I think they would strongly dispute that claim. Their formulas are famously theirs and cannot be bought elsewhere.

Edited

Almost all makeup/skincare brands use contract manufacturers to produce, even big companies that also have their own factories. Then manufacturer gets the formulation from the brand, it isn’t white label stuff with a different label. These manufacturers will be make cheap stuff and high end stuff in the same facility at the same time but all the formulas are unique to the brands and kept secret/separate

GoGoSuperBug · 12/02/2026 18:22

Kurt Giger, I still love their stuff though.

WhereYouLeftIt · 12/02/2026 18:24

I'm a bit on the fence with the Dryrobe. Yes, lots of people wear them who never go near open water, but back in the 1980s lots of us wore ski jackets and had never been near a slope! They were just a really practical warm jacket that you could get a hold of easily. One of mine came from a (summer) sale in a fancy sports shop, and another from C&A (I miss them still).

So I'm not going to think of Dryrobe as tacky.

Similarly with Superdry - not tacky IMO. My son was very ford of that brand when he was a teen, and asked me to buy him one of their jackets. I was quite impressed with it, it was well made with lots of practical pockets. Their t-shirts washed well too!

I do dislike (and find tacky) clothing with very LARGE read-them-at-twenty-paces logos - I am not a walking advertising hoarding!

And? If people were being massively homophobic on a thread, would you say the same? Weak excuse.

Well no, because homosexuality is a protected characteristic and homophobia is rightly against the rules of this chat forum. This thread is at worst about having mean girl thoughts about brands, which aren't a protected characteristic. A brand doesn't have feelings to get hurt, because it's not a living organism.

Sure, there are some comments about the people who use certain brands - like the one about thinking people who use dryrobes but aren't open water swimming are a bit tacky. I'm one of those people who wears a not even properly branded dryrobe to lots of things that aren't wild swimming, but it's really hard to take a stranger on the internet's opinion about something like that personally or offensively. The very first word of the opening post is Lighthearted.

I'm surprised pp thinks Chanel is tacky....

AutumnLover1989 · 12/02/2026 18:27

Canada goose🤮 and Burberry, especially that awful print Daniella Westbrook had years ago, complete with match pram and accessories 🙄

AutumnLover1989 · 12/02/2026 18:27

Chanel when it's knocked off shower curtains and bath mats etc 😄

GameOfJones · 12/02/2026 18:28

Because they look like bath robes and are in fact “robes” - the clue is in the name! I don’t judge the dry robe wankers as hard as I judge the PJ’s in Tesco or the hair rollers in public folk, but I definitely put them in the same category. And yes I am a snob with my judgy pants hoiked! 😂

Totally agree, it's akin to wearing your dressing gown as a coat purely because it's warm.

I don't particularly like the Dry Robe Wankers Facebook page as it seems cruel to take photographs of people. I just judge silently in my head 😬.

Vinvertebrate · 12/02/2026 18:33

Ah you’re probably right that it’s a bit mean @GameOfJones and you probably wouldn’t like the “Wolf Fleece Appreciation Society” either. 😂

SnakesandKnives · 12/02/2026 11:54

Agree with all the comments on the shouty brands - basically any that have their name on the item in massive letters. Not tacky as much as ‘we’ve got you to pay for something to then advertise us’

especially as @ToadRage said, their name on your arse. Particularly Juicy. It’s just a bit cringeworthy to me.

Holland Cooper puffa coats have the huge logo on. Hideous.

Sorry! I stand corrected.

Gettingbysomehow · 12/02/2026 18:47

Ill wear pretty much any brand as long as it doesn't have their logo on it. Im not advertising their product for free.
