Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

(Not a brand though)

FourSevenTwo · 12/02/2026 17:08

Armani
LV
Gucci

Any brand that is trying to be luxurious and widely recognisable at the same time becomes a bit meh.

LipFull · 12/02/2026 17:11

Versace
Michael Kors
Pandora

I never understand why some brands use Z list influencers (Alo, Charlotte Tilbury etc). They're just devaluing their brand, it seems such an odd thing to do.

It makes money for them, it works.

Big chunky scarf (love that) but with the huge Acne Studios label deliberately turned out to be on show - like wearing your knickers inside out - just to show you can drop £300 on a scarf but it’s important to get external validation for it.

or £30 on vinted for a fake ;)

Are people tricked, though? Everyone knows it’s just affordable trinkets. It’s nice to feel a bit special for half an hour. Nobody in there will be going to Tiffany or Asprey.

My daughter-in-law has a Pandora bracelet and I think it's beautiful....it's full of charms that she's bought or been given to mark special occasions, happy times, nice memories etc and she loves it. I think it's really lovely ( and yes I also have what might, by some, be considered to have "good" jewellery in my possession too so I do know what to look for!)

Big slogans
Excessive consumption/fast fashion
Firms that exploit workers

Charlotte Tilbury. It's make up for people who drink caramel lattes.

Never had a caramel latte 😂. Their foundation is the best I’ve had - and I’ve tried a lot!

OneBadKitty · 12/02/2026 17:21

Tacky for me is anything that is cheaply made or garish colours, and brands with huge logos and lots of fake gold hardware etc.

Victoria's Secret,
Juicy Couture,
H&M,
River Island,
New Look,
Peacocks,

For most brands though, like Michael Kors, Pandora etc. I don't think they are especially tacky, it's the people who choose them that make them seem tacky. If you go into Pandora and load yourself up with lots of heavy jangly charm bracelets you'll look tacky, but they actually sell a lot of subtle reasonably priced sterling silver pieces that you wouldn't know were Pandora if you saw someone wearing them. Likewise for Michael Kors- the clothes and bags are reasonable quality, and as long as you don't pick a piece with a big chunky logo attached it will look pretty similar to any other brand.

neeoom · 12/02/2026 17:23

Hermes - exceptional quality (well, I assume) and eye wateringly expensive but…the ‘H’ branding on some things (that blanket!, shoes, belts) is a bit grim. I would be embarrassed to be seen with a Birkin - very try hard…
Any brand that uses scarcity/wait lists to reinforce perceived value I think is tacky.

dudsville · 12/02/2026 17:29

There are things I like and things I don't like. I don't dislike something because it's tacky. I think the fb dry robe wankers thread mentioned here is a good example of where disliking something that someone else likes can just fall into a bit of needless, pointless criticism.

Lulu lemon

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 12/02/2026 17:33

I also had an absolutely fabulous Juicy Couture bag back in the early 2000s - big bags were in, gorgeous high quality black leather and buckles, held everything, great for work and going out. Was gutted when I left it in a cab in NYC but I'll always have my memories.

Absolutely hate LV and Burberry - two brands whose appeal I will never understand - but I don't know that tacky is the word I would use.

Any brands that claims to be high end but let’s just anybody walk in off the street and make a purchase.

Just why would thy do that? Tacky isn’t even the word of it!

THE HORROR

Pandora, Swarovski, Lladro, Michael Kors, Lacoste, Dry Robe, Charlotte Tilbury, Zara, Lulemon.
Whats up with Lladro? I adore my ballerina playroom ornament and i normally dislike ornaments.Lulemon is decent sports wear. Im not seeing a problem with them.

Yes, it's pretty horrendous.

Personally, I think scoffing at people for liking certain brands and even having the temerity to think they look expensive! is the height of tackiness. Still, if it makes shallow, insecure people feel a little better about themselves..

Agreed. This whole thread is ridiculous and judgemental. My daughter (11) has two white fox hoodies and I think they are quite gorgeous

We used to call these prostitute bags - loads of space for carrying around lube, sex toys and wet-wipes. Especially if they were glitzy and embellished with bling.

Eh? I don’t drink coffee but are you the coffee police? Is it somehow inferior to drink any coffee that isn’t flat white or whatever coffee is acceptable to drink?

Happyjoe · 12/02/2026 17:51

Tacky? Nothing. Tbh, I've never been a brands type of person. If I like something, I buy it if I can afford it. Don't pay much attention to what other people are wearing when it comes to labels and most of them would go over my head no doubt. Ooh, I did buy partner a Paul Smith t-shirt this Xmas and the quality was shocking for the price. However the picture on it made a good present 'from the cat' and was met with humour which was my intention. Prob my only bit of 'designer' anything I've bought. Is Paul Smith tacky?!

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

??????

That’s not a brand.

Agree.

I don't think any brand is tacky. There are gazillions of brands I don't like but that's a different matter. I don't like obvious logos but equally I don't like the "simple, understated classics" which are so loved here on the "how to look polished" threads.

What I do think are tacky are

1.clothes for babies and toddlers promoting rigid, stereotyped gender roles (e. g daddy's little princess, future WAG)

  1. T-shirts which have swearing or crude jokes on them.

Ha ha ha this is MEEEE!!!! I'm proud of wearing my ridiculously oversized but warm dryrobe knock off from aldi, but you'd never catch me going wild swimming 😆

If it's any consolation (and it matters not to me if it isn't), I do take part in a sport where warm and waterproof coats are an exceedingly good idea and many people at that sport also wear dryrobes, despite it being a very much on dry okay, sometimes wet land.

In answer to the actual thread; Baylis & Harding. Tries to promote itself as at least somewhat upmarket, but I just think their handwashes have always looked tacky and cheap.
