Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

This!!! We call them dry robe wallies. Especially as we live in the middle of the country, nowhere near the sea, and lakes are hard to come by too!

Those who say this obviously don’t have a dog! Our retriever needs interesting walks in all weathers so I often end up in the forest/random fields or at the beach with her in pouring rain and thick mud. The DryRobe has been a lifesaver during winter

So has my parka

DryRobes are portable changing rooms.

If you want a winter coat, buy one that fits instead.

Parkas certainly have a place (love mine for non doggy outings) but I don’t fancy chucking a delicate down jacket in the wash every few days. The dryrobe can be easily thrown in the washing machine and dried with minimal care

Out of interest how does this translate?

It basically means something like “get extremely dry” or “extremely dry (do it).” But “shinasai” wouldn’t normally be separated on its own, so I don’t understand why it’s in brackets. But we also use awkward or incorrect English on products sometimes.

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

Very popular where I am from, no water anywhere, all seem to be overweight and shuffle. Sorry if this offends, but true

You may well be from around my way!

I do go open water swimming, and I do have a dry robe for that purpose. But they are actually just big warm coats and I think it's a bit weird to think you can only wear them if you've just climbed out of the river

The head to toe beige/brown/cream skin tight outfits are now tacky. Just so over done

The worst ones are where they almost match the wearers skin tone so you have no idea if they’re naked or not.

Mini skirts which look like a belt or revealing clothing or extreme clothing like Bo Peep outfits. Saw a lot of all of these lately.

Anything that has the logo emblazoned all over it!

Goinghome2late · 12/02/2026 16:36

Love my dryrobe.

i swim and its currently 5c in the lake.
I also wear it camping, in torrential rain to take the bins out, and sometimes even to the supermarket.

I do not give any shits at all if I am considered to be tacky or end up on a stupid fb page full of sad judgy arseholes.

I will however judge those men who wear shorts to the shops in January and flipflops with feet like scaley hooves...

Someone bought all the clever messaging. They don't manufacture. They just get it off white label manufacturers, i used to work in that industry and its honestly nothing special.

Well, I have Revlon and L'Oreal lipsticks and CT lipsticks, and hers last for hours whereas the others are vastly thinner and less long-wearing.

Beauty editors and consumers mostly find her stuff to be very high-quality.

Do you have any evidence that CT is white label? I think they would strongly dispute that claim. Their formulas are famously theirs and cannot be bought elsewhere.

WittyTaupeFox · 12/02/2026 16:41

Holland and cooper - such bad quality now given the price tag and super tacky imho

anything with make up caked on the models wearing it.

agree re Tilbury but she has some good hero products - the nude lipstick, bb cream and magic cream being three

ELMhouse · 12/02/2026 16:41

I think it also depends on your age for a lot of brands mentioned. Teens wearing White Fox is quite endearing imo reminds me of when everyone was watering sketchers and Kickers in the 90s! Oh and I remember loving my sweater shop too and having my Jane Norman bag!

babyproblems · 12/02/2026 16:47

White fox, adanola (the socks particularly) Tommy H, any brand selling gym leggings with bum scrunch. pretty little thing & boohoo goes without saying but I wouldn’t call them ‘brands’ really as I doubt there is much creative process at all.

Juicy has had a bit of a revival and I think people wearing it now lean into the trashiness of it deliberately- that’s why people wear it.
Those saying Superdry i’m sorry but you’re showing your age ! 😂 Superdry is borderline closed down so I think it’s not so much ‘tacky’ as just really really out of date now.
It’s not a brand but Matalan gives me serious ick. It’s literally landfill on a hanger

Screening and pre management approval are just for selected products , which majority can’t actually afford or I think people don’t care much about.

Its brand protection and management.

Twingoo · 12/02/2026 16:55

Big chunky scarf (love that) but with the huge Acne Studios label deliberately turned out to be on show - like wearing your knickers inside out - just to show you can drop £300 on a scarf but it’s important to get external validation for it.

I recently had to build a relationship with a girl at an ‘exclusive’ brand which meant buy a bunch of products just for the chance of being waitlisted to buy a certain product. Pre-spend screening is very real and yes, applies to certain ranges. There are ranges you can walk off the street and buy. Online spend does not count. But yes, I agree, most can’t afford and are completely unaware such a system exists. The world of luxury is very different to the one presented via media / influencers which is not luxury but loud advertising.

Superdry. Their Japanese slogan, Kyokudo kansō (shinasai)極度乾燥(しなさい), on their products is grammatically awkward and unnatural. A native Japanese speaker wouldn’t use a phrase like this as a slogan. It sounds like a bunch of random words strung together rather than a coherent expression.

It is exactly that:

"superdry's Japanese slogan, "極度乾燥(しなさい)" (kyokudo kanso shinasai), roughly translates to "Maximum Dry (Do It)". It is a grammatically incorrect, machine-translated attempt to mean "Do Superdry". It was created by British founders using Japanese text to mimic the trend of using foreign, stylized characters for aesthetic appeal."

Its a deliberate sort of parody😑😜 I hate it too!

KimuraTan · 12/02/2026 17:06

Quite a few that have already been named.
Zavetti is another one - the Canada Goose of council estates up and down in this country.. That’s probably an insult to any council estate, sorry.
