Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

@Morepositivemum youve missed the joke. It’s about BMW drivers never using their indicators and generally being obnoxious drivers

Astrabees · 12/02/2026 15:51

I haven't got a Dryrobe but I very much admire the ladies who avoid the not very nice changing rooms at our local swimming pool. I see them striding back to their cars wearing the Dryrobe, hair wrapped up in a towel and fluffy crocks on their feet, looking forward to a proper shower or bath when they get home.

Pissing myself at the person who said Mini Rodini. WTF. I mean, sure, it IS overpriced but I wouldn't call a literal child wearing a logo-free organic t-shirt with a picture of a sausage dog on it "tacky"

Might have been me... I think it's the 'look how much I spend on my 4 year old' that screams tacky.
There is very much a certain type round here who's kids wear mini rodini, mums in dry robes driving a white Range Rover (we are not in the country... there is no need)... every member of the family staggering around with a giant sippy cup and not a sock to be seen...

Victoria's Secret.
Ann Summers.
Asos.
H. Samuel.
River Island. (Gone now)

I wear superdry jeans, can't say they look any different to other brands and I live in some really good quality superdry jumpers in the winter and spring (some are 100% cotton). I also wear their hoodies to the gym as they're practical and last. I also own a pair of Tommy Hilfiger leather trainers.

Maybe because they don't have branding plastered all over them but I can't see how a plain ribbed jumper can be tacky (it has one little logo on the arm). Or plain white trainers with a small logo is tacky.

However what i find tacky are those who judge others.

Notthehill · 12/02/2026 15:54

I think threads dissing brands, as if anyone cares what brand anyone wears, are tacky.

Charlotte Tilbury. It's make up for people who drink caramel lattes.

Eh? Her formulas are incredible! It's really high-quality makeup.

StrongandNorthern · 12/02/2026 12:14

Not a brand, more a trend - animal print ANYTHING at all (except animals).
Cheap and tacky.

I always remember one comedian saying that you shouldn't wear animal print if yiu are larger than the animal it came from- so true.😀

Peridoteage · 12/02/2026 15:55

Charlotte Tilbury definitely. The whole thing is a big marketing engine!

White fox. Any of the "tk maxx brands" that you never see elsewhere. Prada/gucci/LV bags because there are just knock offs everywhere, everyones got one they bought off a stall in majorca.

All the fast fashion like shein/boohoo/pretty little thing

Some brands can and DO screen customers in advance, and they all make a profit.
There's big money in scarcity.

Screening and pre management approval are just for selected products , which majority can’t actually afford or I think people don’t care much about.

Someone bought all the clever messaging. They don't manufacture. They just get it off white label manufacturers, i used to work in that industry and its honestly nothing special.

I've seen a fair few animal print dry robes with bright pink logos around of late. Doubly tacky.

Strangerthanfictions · 12/02/2026 11:54

But why do you care if people find them warm and comfortable and use them for non swimming purposes??? I am genuinely curious why are people so bothered that other people like to wear them in a way that suits them? I don't own one but they look brilliant for watching the kids football, I'm too scared I get judged for wearing it in the wrong place or is it ok to wear it to the football if I also use it for swimming? Or strictly no other purposes allowed?

I agree. After all jeans were worn by ranch hands as they were hard wearing and durable, yet here we are all owning cowboys work trousers.

DancehallDays · 12/02/2026 15:58

Some clothing looks tacky but I don't think any brands are tacky across the board. I don't like the current, long-running athleisure trend - beige leggings which don't flatter anyone - not so much 'tacky' but suggestive of people who blindly follow fashion whether it looks good or not.

Mapletree1985 · 12/02/2026 16:00

Caring about brands is the ultimate in tackiness.

Strangerthanfictions · 12/02/2026 16:01

Vinvertebrate · 12/02/2026 12:00

Because they look like bath robes and are in fact “robes” - the clue is in the name! I don’t judge the dry robe wankers as hard as I judge the PJ’s in Tesco or the hair rollers in public folk, but I definitely put them in the same category. And yes I am a snob with my judgy pants hoiked! 😂

I find it bizarre that people seem outraged by other people's outerwear, I feel like it's trending to judge people about it and like sheep people are jumping on the bandwagon

PithyViewer · 12/02/2026 16:03

KimHwn · 12/02/2026 12:31

I know this is going to sound snippy but I do really mean it- I think judging people for what they wear is tacky. I think everyone has preferences, but to sit in a circle and discuss what is tacky- I just don't think it's a classy thing to do. I think you have to examine what it is you mean by tacky, and whether it's something to do with social class, income, or something else. Good-hearted people just don't look at someone's clothes and make judgements about them. It just isn't done.

This.

Mancefridgerayder · 12/02/2026 16:04

you mentioned Adanola, I don’t think that’s tacky.

QuizzlyBears · 12/02/2026 16:06

I think judging other people based on what they wear and enjoy is tackier than any of the brands mentioned on this thread.

LondonPapa · 12/02/2026 11:52

Pandora does not cost an arm and a leg. Quite the opposite.

I've never actually looked at the prices.

Still tacky, tho.

BunnyLake · 12/02/2026 16:08

I’ve never heard of a dry robe, no idea what it is.

What’s wrong with Superdry? I used to buy my sons some nice jackets and tops from there.

I think Versace can be very tacky as it’s very unsubtle and gaudy.

I’ve never understood the love for those brown Louis Vuitton bags covered in LV logos. They always look like plastic fakes from a market stall even when they’re genuine. Very ugly to my eye.

rainforestalliance · 12/02/2026 16:08

I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone wearing a juicy couture tracksuit, I kind of associate them with that early 2000s/Paris Hilton/mean girls aesthetic which I sort of love in a nostalgic way.

White Fox hoodies are just very popular with pre-teens and teenagers around here which I don’t have a problem with as they look very comfortable and practical and come in nice colours.

i really like coach handbags though, I feel like for a lot of people it’s an attainable option to have a more ‘expensive’ or ‘designer’ type handbag rather than a cheap high street one but can’t afford the really pricey ones. Maybe these type of mid-range priced goods that are seen as aspirational to some and become very popular, inevitably end up perceived as ‘tacky’ to others?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 12/02/2026 16:14

I don't understand the Dryrobe hate - it's just a manifestation of man's desire to stay warm and dry and whilst they were invented for swimmers, it's not exactly a stretch to see why people like benched team sports players (and their parents on the sidelines), dog walkers etc. find that they serve a purpose. They do just work better than a coat in terms of warmth and dryness and if you size down a bit they're not too voluminous.

BunnyLake · 12/02/2026 16:17

OriginalSkang · 12/02/2026 15:23

I don't like Superdry, but I think its more cringe than tacky

Why is it cringe? I used to buy stuff for my kids there. I don’t remember ever seeing anything cringey. It just seemed like a shop to buy a jacket or t shirt in. I’m obviously missing something because it gets mentioned a few times

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/02/2026 16:18

Clarabell77 · 12/02/2026 12:25

I knew this would be the sort of comment someone would make.

”Anybody off the street” as opposed to what, dare I ask?

Some very fancy shops make you make an appointment. No shit.
