Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Superdry. Their Japanese slogan, Kyokudo kansō (shinasai)極度乾燥(しなさい), on their products is grammatically awkward and unnatural. A native Japanese speaker wouldn’t use a phrase like this as a slogan. It sounds like a bunch of random words strung together rather than a coherent expression.

Out of interest how does this translate?

Brightandblustery · 12/02/2026 15:19

BMW. Someone at work gave me a 'talk' recently about how'cool' they are and everyone is jealous of him for having a flash model.

I asked him if he knows where his indicators are and he looked confused....

This!!! We call them dry robe wallies. Especially as we live in the middle of the country, nowhere near the sea, and lakes are hard to come by too!

Don't a lot of people wear them just because they're very warm and comfortable? Seems a perfectly reasonable reason to me.

No, I haven't got one, but now I think about it ...

ChrisMartinsKisskam · 12/02/2026 15:21

I have and love juicy couture lounge wear I have several of the tracksuits
it’s comfortable fits well and perfect for lounging around in at home

Quite! I have one (made by Red, not Dry Robe) and whilst I wear it at the beach after swimming, especially after evening swims, it gets more use as a general coat. It has been brilliant this winter as it’s so warm and waterproof - particularly useful when hanging around while other family members take part in park runs!

One of my children is a teacher and she has been very grateful for hers when she is ‘on duty’ at the local railway station for half an hour after school.

Exactly. If people were wearing them purely because they thought they would be fashionable, it might be justifiable to be scornful. But people wearing a warm, comfortable robe because it's warm and comfortable seem eminently reasonable.

Marc Jacobs Daisy. Mostly. because I despise their adverts.

Pissing myself at the person who said Mini Rodini. WTF. I mean, sure, it IS overpriced but I wouldn't call a literal child wearing a logo-free organic t-shirt with a picture of a sausage dog on it "tacky"

Threads like these are effectively benchmarking exercises for the average middle.

Bubble678910 · 12/02/2026 15:28

It's a shame because Superdry clothes are always so highly recommended as being good quality 😂My friend has a superdry coat that she adores, but she cut out the logo on it. And one of my DH's work colleagues always says the Superdry shirts and blouses are the best quality for the price, but he also cuts the logo out! I don't think it's "tacky" but it definitely isn't a cool brand and I can't really put my finger on why

Get it 😂 my dog walker has 1 i assuming it is because she is out in crappy weather all day and it keeps her dry and warm.

In fairness i hate their cringey big logo hoodies but love their tiny same colour as the rest of the hoodie, hoodies.
Mine have lasted for well over a decade where more "premium" brands have not. I still buy the zero-logo ones on vinted if i find them!

people should be able to wear them if they want without snobby people like you commenting ...who are you to judge ??

queenofarles · 12/02/2026 15:30

every brand has a product, Gucci , Bottega veneta, Loewe , even Chanel and Hermes , Hermes jewellery and blankets are so tacky and ubiquitous people just think you were pushed to buy them to get a bag.
Any brands that claims to be high end but let’s just anybody walk in off the street and make a purchase.
Just why would thy do that? Tacky isn’t even the word of it!
not sure what you mean? Should they screen customers in advance ?
Brands are businesses after all and need to make profit,

Not meaning to be smart but were you mixing it up with Tesla? BMW have their indicators in the same place as any other car except older teslas

This is a light-hearted thread and I'm willing to bet that you make several judgements on a daily basis. We all do.

Some brands can and DO screen customers in advance, and they all make a profit.
There's big money in scarcity.

Charlotte Tilbury. It's make up for people who drink caramel lattes.

Oh dear. I love their lipstick

Infamously a top department store in London told the it director of a top company they should perhaps go somewhere else then had to apologise as they told all the employees to boycott it and word spread. No Pretty Woman moment but she got an apology by email and a valid for a year discount!!

Crikeyalmighty · 12/02/2026 15:37

The problem is some brands that people may call ‘tacky’ I buy because at the price point /quality level relative to my budget they hit the spot for me -within that range I would have Skechers, superdry hoodies, lululemmon leggings and sport tops, north face jackets, and yes I have 2 Michael kors jackets/coats that I like and have lasted well and the odd bit of Charlotte tilbury make up too

People who wear dry robes but don't go open water swimming.

I first saw DryRobes at a trail race. People who had finished their race were hanging around in DryRobes so they wouldn't get cold. I know they're for swimming, but my mind always associates them with ultra running.

outdooryone · 12/02/2026 15:40

Most brands with big logos or repeated logos.

What’s wrong with Dry robes?

I don’t own one personally, but surely a dry robe is just a big waterproof coat? Great for dog walking. My dc also wear them for football to stay warm and dry if they’re on the bench.

Babyijustdontgetit · 12/02/2026 15:49

White Fox. IMO looks super cheap and Juicy Couture.

honeylulu · 12/02/2026 15:50

Reading with interest. I would agree anything with big flashy labels/logos is a bit off putting. Though I have got quite a few bits from Hollister because they are so warm, comfy and well fitting. I love my North Face fleece too as it keeps me warm when cycling.

White Fox and Juicy look trashy rather than tacky.
