There’s always one who loves pissing on your chips. 🙄

She’s seen it in real life and has an opinion based on that. It didn’t come across as mean at all imo.

CoastalGrey · 02/02/2026 12:19

I agree, if I was considering spending 3 figures I’d prefer to know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Molleeeee · 02/02/2026 13:05

It wasnt meant to be pissing on chips. I was so pleased to have found the dress and thought this was the one. When it arrived it was a real disappointment.

I just voiced my opinion - noone need take any notice of it. OP might want to see it to be aware before they spent loads of time choosing accessories etc.

It was a real disappointment and is very frumpy and looked cheap in real life. Could be how it looked on me. Size 10 5ft8. I reall hope it does work for OP

AwfullyGood · 02/02/2026 13:13

It's lovely.

Dark green shoes would be gorgeous with it, or check if the bridesmaid green would compliment it.

Ducksbehindthesofa · 02/02/2026 14:11

Gosh, that's just beautiful!

Tonissister · 02/02/2026 14:17

Yes it is stunning. But I might pick out paler colours for shoes and bag, and hat if wearing one. The only hesitancy I have about it - because it's really beautiful - is the dark colour. You don't want to look too sombre.

I'd go for smoky lilac shoes that pick up the pale purplish mauve colour in the dress, and a minty sagey green for the bag, that links with that colour in the dress.

Tonissister · 02/02/2026 14:19

BoudiccaRuled · 01/02/2026 15:46

Yes! Unless hats really suit you, then avoid. They really don't suit glasses either, too much going on. And fascinators look ridiculous on most people.

I'd never noticed that hats don;t work with glasses. I think you are right. Good tip. Except for classic combinations like big sun hats and big shades, or little round wire rimmed ones and caps or berets.

Of course, if you’ll feel good in it? Does it reflect your usual style? It’s certainly appropriate for a wedding. It’s definitely not at all fashionable though. I do think £349 is a high price tag for it too (though it is 100% silk).

What sort of style/labels do you usually wear?

What makes you say it’s ’not at all fashionable’? Is it just because it’s Hobbs? What would you suggest that would be better?

dottyaboutstripes · 02/02/2026 14:32

I saw this in store today and I’m afraid it didn’t look very special IRL imo - I’m also going to be MOB so I know it’s stressful wanting it to be just right!
I guess try it and see , maybe it’ll be perfect when you try (hopefully!)

It definitely isn’t fashionable - everything about it to be honest - the length, print, silhouette. As to what would be better and what I’d suggest, it really depends on OP’s personal style - which is why I asked her the follow-up questions I did.
Being fashionable doesn’t necessarily matter, but OP did say she had ‘no clue as to fashion’ and wanted opinions on the dress. The dress might be perfectly fine and suitable, but it definitely isn’t fashionable. As to Hobbs as a brand - some pieces they do are more fashionable than others! I own a few items from Hobbs but definitely don’t think of it as fashionable.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/02/2026 15:08

Oh fgs. It’s for a wedding and often the kind of dresses that people wear to weddings are not necessarily the height of fashion. Maybe link to a few things that you think are the height of fashion and also appropriate to the event and the OP’s age/size?

You haven’t answered my question, as I knew you wouldn’t. Just ‘declared’ it to be unfashionable. I don’t think you are trying to help the OP at all, just enjoy feeling smug and superior

MakemineaGandT · 02/02/2026 15:19

Oh dear - no offence intended. Why do you feel ‘unfashionable’ is an insult?

Indeed. Which is why in my first message I said it is entirely appropriate for a wedding.

I don’t particularly feel it. But I think you intended it.

Craftysue · 02/02/2026 17:10

I wore something very similar to my son's wedding - it's lovely and as a bonus I've worn it another couple of occasions. I went for navy shoes, very similar to the model.
Have a lovely day

LlynTegid · 02/02/2026 18:02

I think it is suitable and stylish.

gypsy22 · 02/02/2026 20:33

You could have silver shoes and pick up the green of the print in a clutch bag or vice verce .
hats often spoil an outfit .. unless they’re mandatory ..

dancingkween · 03/02/2026 09:59

The dress came today. It's lovely. A little long, but I'll get a local tailor to see if it's possible to shorten it before I remove the labels.

Glad you like it. Looking forward to hearing what you choose to pair it with.

dottyaboutstripes · 03/02/2026 10:59

That’s great! It does come in a petite fitting if that would be better for you?

I thought of shortening it but then realised that it would bugger up the pattern on the bottom of the dress.

TimeForATerf · 03/02/2026 17:04

Yes! I wore a Hobbs silk dress in a similar style for my son’s wedding last year, different colour but it was late April. It was hugely admired and I felt a million dollars. I did get a really nice matching head piece from Hobbs which finishes the whole look off.

It is fashionable and at £349 fairly cheap for MOB dresses.
