the dry cleaner LOST the dress I was going to wear so please HELP

i can go to a large shopping centre like Westfield or I can go to the centre of London as the wedding is there so I have a wide choice of shops. I want to choose a dress this morning online, call the shop to check it’s in stock, then go. Help me find a good dress.

I want a really smart, eye catching, well made and eye catching outfit. I want colourful as that’s the instruction for the wedding.

I am 50 years old. 5’11’’. Size 10. Quite small bust (c cup but they look smaller for some reason). I have hair that used to be brown and is now lots of caramel highlights to hide the grey.

because of my height and age I won’t wear heels.

budget is generous. I could spend up to £500 on dress, acccessories etc but I would prefer much less.

i am giving a reading in the church so I need to look great and my face is not by best asset so I need the outfit to do the looking great. Any ideas?

Personal shopper at John Lewis?

BoxedOff · 31/01/2026 08:23

I don’t think they will have appts left first thing on a Sat but I might call and ask.

what do people think of this for a wedding that wants colourful: www.meandem.com/fit-and-flare-ornate-paisley-print-maxi-dress-orange-multi

Reformation? Loads of nice occasion dresses in there at around the £300 sort of price point. They have a few stores in London.

ZenNudist · 31/01/2026 08:23

I bought an entire wedding outfit in John Lewis phase 8 dress, matching flat shoes , phase 8 very smart trench coat, then added my own bag and a pashmina that I wore as a scarf with the coat and for warmth in case (September wedding).

Though if you are OK for shoes and coat and you just need a £500 dress I'm sure you'll be fine. What a stress though!

I know it may be a bit dull, but I would also hit John Lewis…

SoftandQuiet · 31/01/2026 08:27

What a nightmare. Love the first one, (but not with a black jacket). Can see you doing a reading in that, the colour of love!
Try not to overthink it or you'll wear yourself out stressing (well I would). Good luck!

fruitbrewhaha · 31/01/2026 08:27

I was about to suggest Me and Em. They have lovely dresses made with beautiful fabrics. Get there asap. Good luck.

Really love this dress - great choice!

ZenNudist · 31/01/2026 08:29

Both dresses you point to are good but I'd honestly just go and see what's in stock, buy a nice dress. Wedding outfits are very varied so you can be quite flexible. I only suggested John lewis if you need shoes as well.

BoxedOff · 31/01/2026 08:29

Good point about the black jacket not suiting the first dress there. Do you think you need a jacket for a wedding? Could I just get the dress and some striking earrings and wear that dress with my existing brown brogues?

Selfridges then! They have Me+Em and Reformation… don’t they?

Crofthead · 31/01/2026 08:31

I would be going to dry cleaner to look for the said dress. How could they lose it? Do they send them away to get dry cleaned?

Screamingabdabz · 31/01/2026 08:34

That me+em dress is stunning - sod John Lewis I’d just go for that!

BoxedOff · 31/01/2026 08:34

I will look at RIXO now. I hadn’t heard of them. These are the shoes I have that I think I will wear so they aren’t super smart: https://www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/adrian-carrara-leather-tassel-loafers-saddle-tan/p/30686225

what do people think about the jacket question: do you need one for doing a reading in a church?

i like the pink one! But yes as @Crofthead says what is dry cleaner saying?

I love the ME+EM options. You’ll look great, good luck!

I went yesterday after work and they said they couldn’t find it and to come back today. I will but I can’t rely on that at this stage. I think they clean onsite and they aren’t huge so I’m worried they have given it to the wrong person or something.

Go to Marylebone High St, between ME+EM, Wyse, Rixo, MaxMara weekend, etc you'll find something perfect, if you need, you can run down to the big M&S on Oxford st for any underwear you need.

GingerKombucha · 31/01/2026 08:40

And as long as dress isn't sleeveless, no need for anything over it.

Good idea and the wedding is very close to there too.

It depends on the wedding but I wouldn’t wear those shoes to anything but a very low key, informal wedding. Personally think they’re too casual. But I know very little about fashion so 🤷🏼‍♀️

NOTANUM · 31/01/2026 08:47

Don’t go to the Battersea Me&Em - that shop is tiny! Selfridges and JL Oxford Street are the best bet.

We need your dry cleaner to tell us how anyone loses a dress in their shop?!

Perfidia · 31/01/2026 08:47

What a nightmare! (Am currently dealing with a similar issue where a practice has lost something I need for a funeral very soon.)

Net-a-Porter could possibly bike over a few outfits for approval to you if you’re very close to London.
