the dry cleaner LOST the dress I was going to wear so please HELP

i can go to a large shopping centre like Westfield or I can go to the centre of London as the wedding is there so I have a wide choice of shops. I want to choose a dress this morning online, call the shop to check it’s in stock, then go. Help me find a good dress.

I want a really smart, eye catching, well made and eye catching outfit. I want colourful as that’s the instruction for the wedding.

I am 50 years old. 5’11’’. Size 10. Quite small bust (c cup but they look smaller for some reason). I have hair that used to be brown and is now lots of caramel highlights to hide the grey.

because of my height and age I won’t wear heels.

budget is generous. I could spend up to £500 on dress, acccessories etc but I would prefer much less.

i am giving a reading in the church so I need to look great and my face is not by best asset so I need the outfit to do the looking great. Any ideas?

Definitely go to me +em, take your shoes and try a few things on. I know they want a sale so it's not entirely objective advice, but I'm sure the staff at the shop will help you find something when they hear your predicament!

organisedadmin · 31/01/2026 08:55

I think those shoes are very hard to wear with a dress, what about a ballet pump?

gototogo · 31/01/2026 08:55

If it’s in a church you may need something warm, whilst some are adequately heated many are not

Smartiepants79 · 31/01/2026 08:46

It depends on the wedding but I wouldn’t wear those shoes to anything but a very low key, informal wedding. Personally think they’re too casual. But I know very little about fashion so 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have ballet flats in gold or in black. I could do those. I am too tall and too old and too sore of foot to wear any heels at all. I do know they would look better but I just can’t bare them

Me &Em will do same day delivery to your house and wait while you try stuff on as it sounds like you’re in Greater London. You can then be guaranteed your size etc.

TRY AT HOME WITH HARPER (GREATER LONDON) - £14.95

Nominated hour appointments available 10am - 10pm, 7 days a week
Your Style Concierge will arrive within your nominated hour with your chosen pieces to try on. You only purchase the pieces you wish to keep after your appointment, and if anything is not quite right, it will be taken away hassle free.

BoxedOff · 31/01/2026 08:59

That’s a brilliant idea! I had no clue they did that. We are zone 2 so hopefully I can try that

Selfridges - the concessions for Me&Em and Reformation are on the same floor. Underwear can also be sorted there.

I once had to buy an evening dress on the day of a televised awards ceremony (and we were nominated) and a sales assistant in Selfridges made it their mission to get me sorted from top to bottom.

WhosMadeline · 31/01/2026 09:00

I would not look online and phone and ask if they have it if I only had a morning to nail getting the outfit. Wastes time and might not be as nice in real life. I would go into town asap and start trying on what is in stock in front of me.

Personally I would hit John Lewis first. Also Hobbs, Phase 8, Jigsaw, Monsoon, Coast if that still exists. Ghost is really good. Probably is within JL if not its own shop.

Good luck! Have a wonderful day and enjoy.

PinkBobby · 31/01/2026 09:01

If you’re heading to Marylebone-ish anyway, I’d start in Selfridges on Oxford Street. Mix of options/prices all in one place (including shoes/accessories if you really need them). If not, you can head to Regent’s Street for more options or up to Marylebone for the options listed by a PP. The options you’ve suggested above are great - I hope you find something similar and have a great time!

I would be going to dry cleaner to look for the said dress. How could they lose it? Do they send them away to get dry cleaned?

I used to work in a dry cleaners years ago. It definitely happens. The items get stuck together and handed to the wrong person. Sometimes they return them other times they don't.

I don’t think they will have appts left first thing on a Sat but I might call and ask.

what do people think of this for a wedding that wants colourful: www.meandem.com/fit-and-flare-ornate-paisley-print-maxi-dress-orange-multi

LOVE this! With your height and build it will be stunning

ThatsOneView · 31/01/2026 09:05

Just check me and em style concierge and first appt wasn’t until 5 Feb.
As others have suggested get yourself to Oxford St area. There’s also a Me&Em store along New Bond St. The concession in Selfridges is pretty small. Good luck!

organisedadmin · 31/01/2026 09:06

@BoxedOff you are defo not too tall! I’m half an inch under you but wear smaller heels now i’m older.

I think a ballet flat would look more elegant

MustyDooDah · 31/01/2026 08:30

Selfridges then! They have Me+Em and Reformation… don’t they?

Or Liberty. Great selection of interesting dresses.

organisedadmin · 31/01/2026 09:06

And defo try Rixo as they look good on tall people.

I was given someone else's dress along with mine. I took it back.

Upcyled · 31/01/2026 09:08

Great suggestions on here, the first dress you linked looks perfect. No need for a jacket at a wedding. Have a lovely time.

Years ago we stopped to pick up my husband's suit from the dry cleaner on our way to a wedding a few hours away. Got to the hotel and they'd given us the wrong suit. Fortunately it fitted, as we had no other options at that point, but apparently the other person was very annoyed to get the wrong suit - obviously we then returned it, but we were away for the weekend and couldn't bring it back till after then..

GingerKombucha · 31/01/2026 08:39

Go to Marylebone High St, between ME+EM, Wyse, Rixo, MaxMara weekend, etc you'll find something perfect, if you need, you can run down to the big M&S on Oxford st for any underwear you need.

I was going to say the same thing!

What about RIXO - the staff at the King's Road branch are very friendly and helpful!

Kaila Silk-Midi Dress in Layla Mix Navy | RIXO ⋆

Love this one! That's what I'd go for. I would get other shoes as to be honest yours are not at all weddingey. But with the Rixo dress, it'll be easier to get some navy or black shoes to go with. I don't think you need a jacket, other than for warmth.

Mummylove2026 · 31/01/2026 09:37

I’m so tense for you OP. Let us know you get sorted. I’m also no help because I’m almost 100 miles away and never been to London.

Mildorado · 31/01/2026 09:40

BoxedOff · 31/01/2026 08:44

Good idea and the wedding is very close to there too.

Would you go straight from shopping to the wedding?

SpringingOn · 31/01/2026 09:50

I think the first dress is stunning. No need for a jacket unless you are cold.

Tonissister · 31/01/2026 09:56

I LOVE the first dress. Stunning. But not with those shoes. Find some low block heeled or flat but elegant shoes. Moshulu have lots of choices like this, if there is an outlet near you.
