Hair change too drastic. Wtf have I done?

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 13:39

I know it's just hair and it will grow back. That was my reasoning for doing it in the first place. I have a lot going on and I was just not washing my hair or taking care of it properly.

It was about 6 to 8 inches past my shoulders and dyed red. I couldn't keep up with the maintenance of it
And I felt like I had too much going on in my life to deal with such long hair.

After watching too many youtube videos, I decided to give myself a bob which obviously went very wrong and I ended up at the hairdresses. He decided that a pixie (between a bob and pixie) would be god for me and low maintenance, but he's basically just giving me a pixie with a fringe.

With my red hair, I was getting Sharon Osbourne vibes. So I try to put a brown dye over the top but it didn't take at all! so I ended up using a black dye I had in my bathroom.

So now I have Kris Kardashian vibes.

I just hate it so much. It's too dark for me.And I feel like all my femininity has gone.

I feel Ive aged myself 15 years.

I have a schwarzkopf colour remover on the way to try and get the black out.

I feel so stupid, my confidence has dropped. My kids were shocked.

DH keeps saying it looks 'cute'but I know he loved my long hair and I can just tell he doesn't really like it but he is absolutely teying to reassure me 🤣

Oh lord. Why did I do it??? 🤣😭😭

Oh OP it's ok we've all made bad hair mistakes and you weren't in a great place.

I once home dyed my hair and it went green. I also had a truly dreadful haircut in a salon just before I was due to be best woman. Please don't try anything else. It will grow soon.

Fizzy208 · 23/01/2026 15:30

The black will wash out, it's only hair, it will grow :) It will probably look different in a weeks time, it'll have grown a little bit and the colour will have faded. x

Wowarentyoutall · 23/01/2026 15:31

To get rid of colour wash your hair in a mixture of head & shoulders shampoo & washing up liquid , it does dry your hair out so use a good conditioner . I tried to do mine silver from blonde I ended up looking like winnie the witch it went dark grey, washed it twice & it got rid of the major of colour
Good luck x

SanFairyAnnie · 23/01/2026 15:32

shampoo every few days and get some argan oil conditioner from the pound store. Have you any stylish scarves to tie around your head in the mean time?

BagaChips · 23/01/2026 15:35

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 14:42

I was just hoping to strip back the colour to put a medium brown over it.

Don't do this OP. You shouldn't put dye on it straight away, the hair cuticles stay open and it will just end up really dark again. If you use the colour stripper you will end up having to embrace orange hair for a while

ChapmanFarm · 23/01/2026 15:36

I don't think people are being harsh, just blunt to try and stop you making it worse.

Send back the colour remover.

Head and shoulders is good for fading colour, as is a trip to the swimming pool. You need to soften it not turn it an awful orange you'll be stuck with.

I'm sure it looks fine or will very soon. I have to deliberately dye my hair too dark because otherwise it fades too fast and becomes a horrible brassy brown.

I dislike it for the first week but it softens fast and I've learned one week of it being a bit harsh is worth it for months of the colour I like (otherwise I like it when first on but hate it within weeks and I'm stuck with it much longer).

It must look better than matted hair. Be kinder to yourself.

Arcticsway · 23/01/2026 15:38

Please, just leave it for now. Don't DIY strip it back.

I had my hair all sorts of colours over the years, often red. I once dyed it black and hated it. But it faded really quickly and once it was fading I was able to put a softer colour over it, a sort of mid brown. You could probably also do red at that point if you wanted to.

StasisMom · 23/01/2026 15:42

I'm sorry OP and I get that it is a shock at the moment. Maybe think about tweaking makeup etc, to account for the change in your colouring. As PPs have suggested, wear a beanie or similar - it's cold weather season and will be for as long as it takes to grow. Take care.

BaronessBomburst · 23/01/2026 15:43

Lipstick. Most hair mistakes can be salvaged with the right lipstick and rocking the look.
Deep purple for goth vibes.
Or red for a vamp.
Pearl pink for 90s pop star.

neveradullmoment99 · 23/01/2026 15:43

Whwn my hair was too dark I used crushed vitamin C tablets and applied it to my hair ( look up You tube) It lifted it a few shades lighter and enough for it to not look so dark. Be kind to yourself. We all have hair disasters xx

Happyjoe · 23/01/2026 15:45

If your hair is black, rest if for a few days then get a highlighter bleach set. You know, those ones with the cap and holes! The result won't be completely bleached, esp if don't leave it on too long but it will give you some nice softer highlights of amber/lighter brown. That's what I did to tie me over when I mucked mine up! Pretty hair scarfs are lovely too and of course, we are in wool hat season.

It's not the end of the world OP, meant kindly, you'll find a solution and look how you want to look soon and you'll laugh over this one :-)

NewGoldFox · 23/01/2026 15:47

Black dye often looks way too harsh at first just give it two weeks to fade a bit and I expect it will look nice. Head and shoulders helps fade colour and at least the cut sounds nice! That’s the main thing. If you’re feeling self conscious wear a hat (it’s bobble hat season anyway so won’t look out of place)
Be kind to yourself, hair grows!
When I was as in the midst of post partum depression I gave myself angled goth bangs then panicked and ended up with micro bangs, it was so ghastly but they grew out eventually 😂

Whatever you do stop doing things at home. Box dye - especially black - is extremely difficult to strip back and you’ll need bleach to lighten it (if that’s what you choose to do). Honestly if you hate it cut it all off and start over. By which I mean, pay a professional to cut it.

Colour stripper is ok but he colour will usually darken over the next few days. That’s because the stripper isn’t really removing the dye, it’s just changing the chemical formulation of it. Oxygen from the air will darken the colour molecules again. Trust me, I’ve tried this many times!

Newyearsameme26 · 23/01/2026 15:50

I bet it feels and looks really healthy and shiny. You will have to own it. Big earrings, bright red lips. IT WILL ALL BE OK. Perhaps this change is actually what you needed.

xSnowFairyx · 23/01/2026 15:51

Use a clarifying shampoo, Head&Shoulders dandruff shampoo or Fair Liquid to strip the box dye colour out. Just keep on shampooing and washing.

Then once the colour has been stripped the best it can, go to a hairdresser, preferably one that specialises in colour and colour corrections and have it dyed at close to your natural colour as possible.

Then leave it for a while. Don’t touch. Keep remembering it will grow back. Because it will.

You can oil your scalp twice a week (before washing) with a hair oil, I use Rapunzel Oil by Hair Syrup, buy a scalp massager and massage the oil into your scalp. (You can get cheap silicone ones from Primark/Superdrug)

Biotin capsules can also make your hair grow. Avoid any heat! Blow dry it on the coolest setting. Use a silk pillow case.

All these things are best for healthy hair and can encourage hair growth.

Once it grows a bit longer you can always try and find some good clip-in extensions to wear until your natural hair reaches your desired length.

NotMeAtAll · 23/01/2026 15:51

Perhaps your reaction is because you're feeling fragile. Maybe you could leave it for a few days before doing anything else.

I did a VitC and Superdrug Anti-Dandruff treatment on my disaster colour ( it was magenta Shock ) but it was a semi-permanent which is loads easier to shift .

Many years ago I decided that a very dark brown would do instead of a warm mid brown and I looked like a PoundShop Shakin' Stevens .
So that needed cut out .
A not to be repeated error

Sidebeforeself · 23/01/2026 15:57

People weren’t being unkind OP and they didnt know your circumstances. We can all relate Im sure - they were just trying to stop you from making things worse.

I think you should just embrace it. It will be much easier to look after so you got that bit right! Can you wear brighter clothes/make up to off set the dark against your skin? I know you dont have much money but maybe go through your wardrobe and give yourself a style update with stuff you havent worn for a while? Maybe mix up your jewellery.

What Im saying is maybe try to have some fun with your new look

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 23/01/2026 15:59

CalmGreenEagle · 23/01/2026 14:09

I can't fathom why you made 4 fuckups to your hair in quick succession.

Not sure why long dyed red hair is that much high maintenance either.

Oh come on, have a heart. The whole OP is about OP realising it's a clusterfuck.

Vaguelyclassical · 23/01/2026 16:01

Please don't believe that short hair removes your "femininity"; google Audrey Hepburn!

AngelinaFibres · 23/01/2026 16:01

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 14:18

Because I had a mental breakdown a few months ago and i was getting matted from not not washing/brushing/drying it properly. And it hurt brushing the mats out

Google a company called JB extensions. They do lovely wigs for very little.

TestTubeTina · 23/01/2026 16:01

Oh OP, we've all had hair disasters. Mine was with henna, and you can't colour strip that as it goes a bit green. I found that one out the hard way...

Just Head and Shoulders it to take some of the darkness out and then leave it for a while to settle and fade. Sometimes it takes a while to embrace the change (and that includes husbands) especially when it's radical and you're feeling fragile.

MyDeftDuck · 23/01/2026 16:02

My mum used to say…..”there’s only a fortnight between a bad hair style and a good one” ! Hang in there OP, it’s only hair, it’s not a terminal illness.

Moonflower12 · 23/01/2026 16:05

Vosene shampoo is good at lifting colour. Black is always a shock at first. As it fades a bit it’ll get better.

sharkstale · 23/01/2026 16:11

I used superdrug rewind stripper to get out almost black dye. It worked and didn't ruin my hair, but I could have just been lucky! And as pp said, extensions. Good luck, I've made some horrible impulsive mistakes in the past with my hair 😭 you have my sympathies x
