my friends all seem to have shoes off households now - do you take slippers with you? What kind would work, stylish, attractive?

I gather in other countries people take slippers with them to put on - this appeals - my feet get cold!!

Any ideas for stylish things to slip on my feet that I'll enjoy wearing? And are easy to carry??

I have adopted this in our house. It seems really obvious - much cleaner. I have copied some French friends and have a basket of slip on mule type slippers people can use. I let people know ahead of time so they can bring slippers if they want too. Mine are some easy sheepskin ballet slippers

Whizzingwhippet · 03/01/2026 14:05

I take slipper socks with me. I don't understand why people wear shoes inside, just feels a bit grim to me so this suits me!

AnchorWHAT · 03/01/2026 17:01

I have those party shoes that are like thin elastic ballet shoes that fold into a little pouch, supposedly for taking out when wearing heels to allow easy dancing or walking home. They come in all colours some even sequinned or velvet, they are very good.

I’ve nearly always got socks on, though wonder if some people rather I have separate slippers and view my socks-fresh-from-shoes as gross!

Grew up in and around strictly (culturally) shoes-off households. I don’t know if I would be happy putting my bare feet in slippers that may have been used by other guests, but I’ve done overnight stays at homes where I was informed ahead of time to bring some comfy slippers along… I’d appreciate that if there aren’t any spare airplane/hotel pairs available.

We are a shoes off household. I take slippers with me and always take my shoes off at the door (cultural thing)
I also have guest slippers for people to use

Mrscharlieeeee · 03/01/2026 17:27

We’ve never not been a shoes off household, even as a child in the 80s and 90s any visitors removed their shoes. My parents bring their slippers, at my mum’s I have slippers there. Never been an issue really, unless it’s summer, I’ll always have socks on.

I see patients at home and they often have white or cream carpets. We aren't allowed to take our shoes off for health and safety reasons so I take those blue plastic overshoes around with me. They aren't provided by the trust. I have to buy my own.
At friends houses I just take my slippers. Warm leopard ones.

I take slippers when I'm staying at other people's houses e.g. staying overnight with family. But when going to an actual event like a dinner party etc where you'd dress up a bit, slippers look stupid imo. I feel like I need some indoor party shoes as mentioned above.

Feteaccompli · 03/01/2026 17:44

I take ugg style slippers to friends houses.

We have a bag of felt mule slippers at our door that we got in Germany, very common for house guests there. Also a good way to use those random white hotel slippers

We are shoes off and I always take my shoes off in other houses. Bring slippers with me, not particularly stylish but warm and comfortable! Even wore them with a sparkly dress on NYE Grin

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 03/01/2026 17:46

I bring indoor shoes - so cleaned shoes of whatever variety I want to wear with my outfit (sometimes they are ballet slippers that genuinely only get worn indoors, or if they are heels or loafers etc then I clean them properly in advance). Change into them in the hall.

Never had any problems with that. I'm not a slippers person - and would feel weird and slobby wearing them in someone else's house unless it was literally hanging out with a best mate.

I do wish no shoes households would remember to warn people though.

See this is what I don't get, why wouldn't you bring cleaned shoes that went with your dress?

ChristmasHug · 03/01/2026 17:47

Folding travel slippers or a nice pair of thick wool socks. I'd find being offered skippers a bit icky though unless the hotel washable type if they looked pristine.

I don't think I know any shoes on households and never have. It probably came in with the hard floor trend and we all live in drafty houses that need carpets.

popcornandpotatoes · 03/01/2026 17:57

I wear socks generally anyway, so I just wear my socks

Because they don’t like any shoes in their house. They were hosting so their rules, I didn’t mind.

I’m British. Cruising into middle age. Not particularly posh or neurotic. Read this thread and realised… I can’t fathom wearing shoes in someone’s house. 🤯

Thistleton · 03/01/2026 18:03

I've bought the black ones, not the pink. But I think they will be fine to either take with me or wear when people come to ours and I'm a bit dressed up.

AccidentallyOnTrend · 03/01/2026 18:04

I’d just wear socks. I always have spare new airline/hotel slippers at mine in case anyone wanted some.

cinnamongirl123 · 03/01/2026 18:06

I take ballet flats with me, ones that I only wear indoors

LeafyMcLeafFace · 04/01/2026 09:35

I have a couple of questions

Those who have a basket of slippers by the door, do you bin them after each person has finished with them?

You are probably not the right audience for this question but
Does anyone else feel slightly nauseated by the thought of (or even words) ballet flats?

DinoLil · 04/01/2026 10:18

Does it depend on your flooring? I have laminate and tiled floors, they are all flipping freezing! Whenever someone goes to take their footwear off, I tell them to keep it on. The floors are too cold. And very easily mopped clean.

LeafyMcLeafFace · 04/01/2026 10:28

I’m with you @DinoLil we also have laminate floors, and are very much a family who embrace the chaos of multiple pets running around jumping on the furniture etc. My best days are when everyone has gone home it looks like a whirlwind has hit and everyone is knackered. So shoes is not even on the radar.

I am intrigued by whether people share slippers with random strangers or they get binned after each use. Or perhaps they’re washed?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/01/2026 11:09

Washed after use.
ive just ordered the Moshulu ones @Thistleton

Ilovesshopping · 04/01/2026 11:13

Shoes always off inside. Hate the thought of outdoor footwear that’s been god knows where -especially public toilets, being worn inside.
