my friends all seem to have shoes off households now - do you take slippers with you? What kind would work, stylish, attractive?

I gather in other countries people take slippers with them to put on - this appeals - my feet get cold!!

Any ideas for stylish things to slip on my feet that I'll enjoy wearing? And are easy to carry??

We’ve been shoes off for years. Does anyone else inwardly clock it when watching TV, and people walk into a house with shoes on?

I don’t really provide alternative footwear. People just wear socks or bare feet.

Kelvinator1 · 05/01/2026 07:06

All these shoes off households - does no one have any pets? I assume not, but it seems odd to me the huge levels of pet ownership in the UK yet huge numbers (on here at least) not allowing shoes in the house....

HumphreyCobblers · 05/01/2026 07:13

I always take my shoes off when I am in that kind of house but we do not ask people to remove shoes in our house and people don't seem to find it grim or disgusting, they keep coming back anyway. Obviously muddy shoes are policed by their owners.

We live in the country when there is no dog mess littering the pavement though, if I lived in the town with fully carpeted house I can imagine having a different view on a shoes off house. We have hard floors that are easily cleaned.

I hate wandering round in my socks as a guest though, I might start taking some kind of indoor shoes with me.

I see patients at home and they often have white or cream carpets. We aren't allowed to take our shoes off for health and safety reasons so I take those blue plastic overshoes around with me. They aren't provided by the trust. I have to buy my own.
At friends houses I just take my slippers. Warm leopard ones.

Oooh they’re fab! Where are they from?

Shoes always off inside. Hate the thought of outdoor footwear that’s been god knows where -especially public toilets, being worn inside.

I never go into public toilets - can I keep my shoes on please?

I’m British. Cruising into middle age. Not particularly posh or neurotic. Read this thread and realised… I can’t fathom wearing shoes in someone’s house. 🤯

Same, and I just wear my socks. I don't wear slippers at home, let alone at someone else's house - I have fluffy socks for winter, but otherwise it's socks or bare feet in summer.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 05/01/2026 07:23

Good points made about pets. No shoes but the cat is giving its bum a good clean in the corner, having come in through the cat flap, walking outside in goodness knows what. Maybe pets should wear gum shields and slippers too.

momahoho1 · 05/01/2026 07:25

Nope, just wear socks. Never kept shoes on in 40 years, I don’t understand why anyone wears shoes in houses, everyone takes them off and has socks/tights/barefeet

Agree, mumsnet is so black and white on everything. We are a no shoes upstairs house but have tiles and laminate down stairs that is easily mopped. Most guests don’t go upstairs anyway.

Runnersandtoms · 05/01/2026 07:31

We have hard floors everywhere so not bothered about people taking shoes off and don't always take ours off. Take them off at other people's houses if that appears the norm there but it is a bit weird if you're dressed up to walk around in tights/socks/slippers.

BagUpTheBeads · 05/01/2026 07:37

I take my slippers to my friend's house, we are both shoes off anyway. It is just normal to me. My FIL has a pair of slippers of his at our house for when he visits. Other people bring slippers. Most of my friends are shoes off.

My slippers are like Ugg boots, never worn outside.

Tillygan60 · 05/01/2026 07:38

We are a thick socks/slippers house. Always remind people to bring slippers, they dont seem to mind!

ParisianLady · 05/01/2026 07:52

We are also ‘grim, rude and disgusting’ as we wouldn’t ask guests to take their shoes off.

If they want to bring slippers they are very welcome but it’s an old and cold house with floors that are uncarpeted downstairs, they’d be freezing in winter in just socks.

I bring slippers to certain friends houses if staying over but I’ve never once been asked to remove shoes at a proper party, and we socialise often. I also don’t think I’ve ever worn socks to a party as party outfits wouldn’t ever mean socks for me.

I take ugg style slippers to friends houses.

We have a bag of felt mule slippers at our door that we got in Germany, very common for house guests there. Also a good way to use those random white hotel slippers

Are the slippers at your door washed after a guest has used them?

Summatoruvva · 05/01/2026 08:07

My mil and parents get a free pass because of the physical faff of taking them off and on in the tiny hall space.
My nan once said it was common and rude to ask guests to remove their shoes and not provide an ashtray! She was a funny bugger.

We must be “grim, rude and disgusting” as we never ask guests to remove their shoes - although we wear slippers in the house. We hoover/mop regularly, it’s fine.

As a guest I would just take my shoes off and go about in my socks, it wouldn’t cross my mind to bring my slippers.

How regularly are you hoovering /mopping, several times a day? You'd need to be.
If you have a porch at the front door and have experienced how filthy the floor is within HOURS of being scrubbed, you realise quickly how disgusting it would be for people to wear their shoes throughout the house!!

Your nan sounds like my kind of gal 😁

Love these but I’ve got very flat feet and need a strap (think Mary Jane’s) to keep on. Any ideas anyone please?

EvolvedAlready · 05/01/2026 08:47

It is grim and disgusting to wear shoes that have walked on paths that have been peed and pooped on by animals and the odd human into a house, onto carpet which can’t be mopped….
the entrance to our house needs regular cleaning as it’s just filthy when people get in the door until they remove shoes.

so ya! I stand by grim, disgusting and rude. 😇

I clock shoes on carpet when watching TV. Even worse though is seeing an advert or TV scene where they plonk their shoe clad feet on the sofa or bed 🤢

GwendolineFairfax8 · 05/01/2026 09:26

When it’s just me and DH, we are shoes off. When our family and close friends visit they automatically take their shoes off to get comfy. If it’s a bigger, dressy gathering and shoes are part of the outfit, we all keep shoes on. Our outer and inner hallway, kitchen and lounge have hard flooring.

DH and me slip shoes/slippers off at the foot of our stairs as they have a runner and our bedrooms are all carpeted.

I am a bit of a neat freak and recently bought a GTech Orca for downstairs - the amount of dirt even during a no wearing shoe, no visitor period was a lot!

When we moved house and I was selling stuff on Facebook, most buyers would politely ask if they should take their shoes off and it was always a no from me.

I am a bit intrigued by people who are shoes off but then have dogs and cats that are walking on those pavements and grassy verges with often hidden ‘contamination’.

Once a guest has taken a pair of slippers they use the same pair every time they come to our house. They are all different colours and sizes so noone gets mixed up and we replace them when needed.

DesignerStars · 05/01/2026 12:14

I’ve never owned a pair of slippers in my life, so definitely wouldn’t start buying them for someone else’s house 😀

TheDenimPoet · 05/01/2026 12:45

Do people not wear socks anymore? Is a pair of socks not more than enough to put on your feet when you're walking round the house? I always just walk round in socks!

I’m a sock hater too tbf 😂. If I’m wearing socks I’d keep them on in someone else’s house though
