my friends all seem to have shoes off households now - do you take slippers with you? What kind would work, stylish, attractive?

I gather in other countries people take slippers with them to put on - this appeals - my feet get cold!!

Any ideas for stylish things to slip on my feet that I'll enjoy wearing? And are easy to carry??

Always shoes off. Floors must be disgusting wearing shoes inside (unless you are able to clean all the floors daily, even then they would still be gross). We did a long walk yesterday, ground was frozen and still came back with muddy shoes. We all took them off outside.

I take my shoes off at everyones house and wear socks. All my friends/family do that too in our house (only one older person brings slippers). Nobody I know wears shoes indoors, perhaps flip flips in the Summer if popping indoors quickly to grab something for the garden.

Its just gross and why would anyone make so much more work for yourself rather than just taking shoes off at the door?

I’m British. Cruising into middle age. Not particularly posh or neurotic. Read this thread and realised… I can’t fathom wearing shoes in someone’s house. 🤯

Same, just cant imagine shoes indoors. Home is supposed to be a cosy, clean, comfy space (also agree, most people have shoes off homes and are not neurotic). Why would anyone choose to walk everything from the pavements round their home? 🤷🏼‍♀️

PeatandDieselfan · 04/01/2026 13:39

We live in a country where no one wears shoes inside. Every house has some dedicated guest slippers which are washed when necessary. Even in some work places, people don't wear outside shoes inside. All schoolchildren keep their own slippers /sliders /crocs in the cloakroom at school and change their shoes as soon as they arrive, at the same time as removing outdoor coats.

topsecretcyclist · 04/01/2026 13:46

I don't wear slippers at home, so am happy to sit around in my socks.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/01/2026 13:46

Depends who, where and event. If we have a party, I am happy for people to keep their shoes on. If we have close friends for supper, they tend to bring their slippers (we are mid 60s).

My slippers are plain suede, snugger than ballerinas - v v simple.

I don’t think I’ve ever once been to a house where people kept their shoes on. It must be incredibly uncomfortable.

I don’t take slippers.

FadedRed · 04/01/2026 20:15

How about something like this? There are some very pretty slippers here and reasonable prices.

I bought a pair of black velvet smoking slippers for more formal events. For non formal events, I just walk around in my socks.

catpigeon · 04/01/2026 20:35

I'd take thick socks

I feel absolutely mental looking at this thread where everyone is saying they take slippers, ballet pumps, “inside shoes” to go round their mates for a cuppa. I just take my shoes off and wear whatever socks I’ve got on, as does literally anyone else I’ve ever met?!?!??

Yup

catpigeon · 04/01/2026 21:29

Definitely not want to wear somebody else's slippers

alicebeauty · 04/01/2026 21:46

I'm in Ireland, nobody I know takes shoes off - the only time I've ever done that is when I visited family in Chester and Jersey

Because my lovely BIL & SIL's floor was so bloody cold I had to put my shoes back on today!

Jeska7 · 04/01/2026 23:00

All my guests automatically take shoes off without asking at mine. I do the same at other people’s houses. It just seems normal in my social circles. People could have walked in mud, in public toilets, and stepped in something unpleasant. Certainly don’t want that on my carpets. Hard floors slightly different situation. Once had someone picking something up from my house, I could see they had quite a lot of mud on their shoes. They were heading into a carpeted room (when not invited in anyway). I specifically asked them not to walk on my carpet and they responded to say “it’s ok” and then promptly walked mud all over my carpet. I had to them clean it after they’d gone! Unbelievably rude.
I’ve taken slippers or thick socks if staying over with friends or family. I don’t have spare slippers by the door though. Not sure how people would feel about that. The odd person has brought their own slippers to mine.

TartyTara · 04/01/2026 23:11

We are shoes off and I just wear socks. I always take my shoes off even in shoes on houses as I just feel rude to walk in with shoes on.

purpleflowergirl · 04/01/2026 23:16

I hate people inviting you over and then making you tak your shoes off. Especially if it’s for a dinner party or an occasion you’ve dressed up for.

the irony of saying it’s so dirty and most of these people have dogs or cats or are quite happy to sit their arses on sofas, which have been sat on seats where the general public have been! I totally understand if shoes are wet or dirty but on a dry day getting people to take their shoes off gets on my tits!

I see patients at home and they often have white or cream carpets. We aren't allowed to take our shoes off for health and safety reasons so I take those blue plastic overshoes around with me. They aren't provided by the trust. I have to buy my own.
At friends houses I just take my slippers. Warm leopard ones.

Nice. Love the matching leopard leggings. Where’d you get them from?

Same! See these threads occasionally (often people getting really affronted about taking shoes off like the home owner is being dead weird) and genuinely find it strange. Born into a working class family in Yorkshire in the early 80s and always took shoes off when entering someone's house, it was just basic manners! I still take them off when going to see friends and just wear my socks. Am usually barefoot in my own house unless it's cold and suppose the only thing I'm squicky about is being barefoot in someone else's house (although I don't care if someone is barefoot in mine, I just know some people don't like other people's feet so feel self conscious 😂)

Our house, its shoes off! If guests don’t like it, I’d prefer they don’t come. 😇
it’s so grim, rude and disgusting to wear shoes in someone’s house. I always take off when going to other houses and when I do I often get “oh we are not fancy here leave them on”. It’s not fancy, it’s basic hygiene

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/01/2026 00:29

We must be “grim, rude and disgusting” as we never ask guests to remove their shoes - although we wear slippers in the house. We hoover/mop regularly, it’s fine.

As a guest I would just take my shoes off and go about in my socks, it wouldn’t cross my mind to bring my slippers.

catpigeon · 05/01/2026 06:00

lol at grim rude disgusting

you sound welcoming

clamshell24 · 05/01/2026 06:17

We have wood and tile downstairs, would never encourage people to take shoes off. Nor do any of our friends! (50s-60s) We wear slippers or birks indoors ourselves. Just hoover /mop/sweep the floors regularly.
