How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

MomWithChinHairs · 08/12/2025 01:50

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

Is it sick to say that makes me feel so much better ?
I feel less like a freak.

Yep! This is your life from now on 😂

I can highly recommend having your face (eyebrows/cheeks/top lip/chin) threaded. I’ve been having it done for over ten years by wonderful Bengali ladies, and though it’s momentarily uncomfortable, the resultant smooth skin on the face is amazing. If you wear foundation you’ll be using much less too

Lemonyyy · 08/12/2025 11:04

Ok I am 35 and have been getting them for years. I have one in one particular spot that keeps growing back that my husband has given a name to 😂 just pluck them x

LuckyDenimBiscuit · 08/12/2025 11:04

Go and see a beautician, or dermatologist...they'll be able to help.

DramaAlpaca · 08/12/2025 11:04

I'm 61 and thankfully have no chin hairs yet, but I have one annoying fine blonde one that appears by magic out of the middle of my forehead every so often. I sometimes wonder how long it's been there before I notice it.

I was parking my car a few weeks back at the local shopping centre, and noticed that the woman in the driving seat of the car parked next to me was making the most of the morning daylight and tweezing her chin hairs with the help of the mirror.

Mimzy26 · 08/12/2025 11:05

Ha a few iv been a bearded lady from 21 you'll be fine

Dinkiedoo · 08/12/2025 11:06

I use an epilatior. Pluck the ones that seem to grow faster than the rest x I dermablade neck and jaw for fine blonde ones as if I use epilatior there I get spots .

Lovesacake · 08/12/2025 11:08

I mean there’s a whole market of products for dealing with woman’s facial hair so we’re definitely not that unusual. I use a shaver like this

I have always told my husband that if I am in capacitated and unable to care for myself, I expect him to be my discreet hair plucker. He laughed.

Just been in hospital for emergency surgery and was there for a week. Couldn't do anything for myself. I do need new glasses so without a magnifying mirror I couldn't see the dark hairs on my chin...he told me there was nothing....he nearly ended up in the bed next to me when my mate offered to sort it for me....Men!

Talipesmum · 08/12/2025 11:12

You need car tweezers.

It's very normal. Electrolysis has been life changing for me.

Tryingatleast · 08/12/2025 11:15

46 and I’ve had a pale tache for years that my friends told me to ignore and I listened to them. Yup I think it’s totally normal!

Oddballs123 · 08/12/2025 11:17

I'm 42 and my whole face is full of hair to the point I am now having dermaplaning facials, I was becoming so self conscious that I didn't want to leave home and I felt great after the first facial, all the hair was gone and added bonus my skin was so soft and new, although it would be expensive to keep having them so I have bought some dermaplaning blades so I can do it myself

Pregnancy3panic · 08/12/2025 11:18

I'm 39 and have PCOS, and have had them since puberty. I pluck them every few days. My mum has the same as me and hers got worse in menopause so she got electrolysis, which took a long time but worked. I expect laser technology has improved since then too.

Sillyme1 · 08/12/2025 11:20

I still them too and just shave them off. I remember my mum had them too. I used to get these very long, around an inch , ones on my neck which appeared over night! These were pulled out pronto!

AnnHedonia · 08/12/2025 11:21

I have a few coming out of my chin, I just nick them off with a razor.

ReadingTime · 08/12/2025 11:21

If you can afford it and the hairs are dark, get them lasered every 6 months or so. Problem solved.

ArthurChristmas22 · 08/12/2025 11:23

Lovely to see all the supportive responses on this thread! You are definitely not alone. Been plucking since I was 25. If I go a couple of days, it's horrendous. Mine are thick and strong enough to be used by the construction industry 😂

It's called hirsutism. In younger women, it's a symptom of PCOS. In older women, it's just the reduction in oestrogen and proportionally higher levels of testosterone which causes them to grow.

BillieWiper · 08/12/2025 11:30

Every woman has a bit of facial hair?! Some quite a lot and dark, some not so much and lighter.

I've got a few 'tache hairs and beard hairs I need to pluck out every few days. Not loads thankfully..but it would be unusual to not have any at all?

centaury · 08/12/2025 11:33

I've basically been able to grow a beard since my teens (PCOS) - had my first electrolysis appt at 15. It's so much less painful now! The machine they used then had to target each individual hair and had a wind-up sound so you clenched up waiting for each painful zap, and it took 20-30 mins. Now the light targets whole areas at a time, the pain is more diffuse and takes about 2 mins.

Worth looking out for deals. The last one I got was 10 sessions for £130ish. Then you can have touch-up sessions every now and then.

Definitely invest in good tweezers!

The only upside is that I have excellent eyebrows and eyelashes 😆

Spaghettifountain · 08/12/2025 11:35

I've been doing it since 21

hexsnidgett · 08/12/2025 11:36

Not found one yet and mid fifties.
Not really a hairy person.

Thelnebriati · 08/12/2025 11:37

I won a needle electrolysis kit on ebay and it was a game changer. You have to do each hair follicle 3 or 4 times over several months, but most of them haven't grown back.
