How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

I now keep a pair of tweezers and a little magnifying mirror in my bag! I first noticed them after I turned 40
but they’re getting worse.

laughs in PCOS misery I’m 31 and have had chin, neck, occasional cheek and upper lip hairs for yearssss. It fucking sucks and I’m sorry it’s just started for you. I pluck mine but I gather laser hair removal is quite effective.

I am fair with light brown hair. But about 10 years ago found an inch-long hair on my neck below the jaw line. (Naturally i found it after having been at a business conference.)

It was thick and black and curly like a man’s beard. Very difficult to pluck as I couldn’t see it; would have to lie on bed and repeatedly try to grasp blindly with tweezers, jabbing and stabbing at my skin.

Finally last spring I had it removed by electrolysis. Five minutes and £25 to end all of that aggravation; kicking myself for waiting so long.

I could have a moustache that a wing commander would be proud of but I get it lasered. Grrrrrrr.

Fairyliz · 08/12/2025 09:27

As I’ve got older the hair on my head gets finer and finer, so much so that I have to have a ‘comb over’ now to hide almost bald patches.
Meanwhile the hair on my chin and neck gets thicker and thicker; it’s like steel wire now.
I wonder if I could sell it as some kind of environmental friendly building material?

vomitinapintglass · 08/12/2025 09:27

You've just made me reach for my facial epilator for a quick whiz around my chin!

Mintypanda · 08/12/2025 09:27

I’m 40 and had 1 or 2 recurrent ones since my 30s. Since turning 40 these have multiplied substantially. I went through a phase of lasering but they recommend not plucking - and I get enormous satisfaction from this. I think they’re more common in dark haired ladies who are more hirsute in the first instance? My mother is one of those lucky freaks who has sparse leg / arm hair and she never got them.

Clefable · 08/12/2025 09:28

I just turned 40 and have started sprouting a really long hair form my chin that just appears from nowhere. DH was most impressed by the speed it appears!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 08/12/2025 09:28

I've had chin hairs and upper lip hairs for a while now and I'm 33. I love a good tweezer sesh in front of the mirror

ManyATrueWord · 08/12/2025 09:29

On a point of order: all women have chin hairs. What you mean is thick possibly visible chin hairs.

And yes we all get those too.

statetrooperstacey · 08/12/2025 09:29

It’s so common I have favourite tweezers, a special magnifying mirror and a several ‘spots’ in the house dependent on light/ time of day, I have ‘old regulars’ little clusters of tough bastards I have to monitor and attend to, I really could go on but won’t😂 on the flip side my other body hair is getting more sparse !

minipie · 08/12/2025 09:31

Ah the crone hairs!

I have PCOS and have crone hairs even though I’m fair and not very hairy anywhere else.

Like a PP mine always get trapped under the skin and turn into spots/scabs. Sigh.

I have had some electrolysed out of existence and need to get a couple more done but need to stop myself plucking them to do that. But plucking one out is the BEST thing ever.

Genevieva · 08/12/2025 09:32

I sometimes get one on my chin. I’m blond, so it is too, but it is thicker than a normal hair. I pull it out and it vanishes for a few months, then suddenly reappears overnight. I’m guessing it’s the start of perimenopause as I’m mid 40s.

I'm 38 and have had them years. I just shave them off tbh. Sometimes wax.

I too shave as it’s easier.

I’m 40 and I’ve had dark hair on my face and chin as long as I remember, a dark hair on my upper lip as thick as an an eyebrow that I need to pluck for about 20 years. Even one that grows dark on my cheek!

it amazes me that you don’t know how common it is! It’s very common!

KeepAwayFromChildren · 08/12/2025 09:39

Hag hairs, one long eyebrow hair and a shrunken and disappearing foof is the price we pay for surviving past meno.

I find those bendy spiral thingies are great for removing hag hairs.

Huntrix · 08/12/2025 09:45

Mine on my chin and top lip have been light and wispy most of my life but in my late 30s they started getting LONG. I feel they are getting darker now that I've hit 40 but they're not quite coarse yet. But yes, definitely noticed my face getting more hairy. 🙈 I've recently noticed my nose hairs going nuts and they're now poking out of my nostrils if I don't pluck them. It's a literal pain because plucking hurts so much! But it's all normal.

UrsulaBelle · 08/12/2025 09:45

I have just the one chin 'hair of strength' (stealing this phrase) that I have to pluck every couple of weeks. Only started in my 50s. I have dark but fine moustache hairs now, but the need for reading glasses means I can ignore them! I've had a few breast hairs since my 20s. I pluck them too.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 08/12/2025 09:46

Frikadelle · 08/12/2025 08:06

Finally a reason to celebrate my thin, barely there, lifeless hair. Body hair has always been practically nonexistent for me. I’ve never even had more than a few hairs to gather themselves into what should be eyebrows. I started getting bald in my forties. But at least I can say that I’ve reached my fifties without ever having a rogue hair make an appearance on my face. That would feel like a major injustice!

Turns out my body is all about equilibrium. The more my once strong and bouncy scalp hair faded into a gentle, whispery breeze, the more my beard and body hair went full Viking.
Honestly, if science could just relocate these overachievers from the lower floors to the penthouse, I’d be ecstatic 😂

SixtySomething · 08/12/2025 09:46

I've had chin hairs since my early twenties!

MarbleDrive · 08/12/2025 09:48

I get only one and have had it for about twenty years. I used my lumea on it and it disappeared for a few years, but it’s recently reappeared and is white. I quite enjoy it when I feel it poking through, which is only about twice a year.

FancyCatSlave · 08/12/2025 09:49

I hate how some of them only show in certain light, so you think you have none and then realise you missed one and wonder how many people have stared at it. My person fear is the hairdressers as they are all half my age or younger and it makes me feel ancient.

SpaceRaccoon · 08/12/2025 09:51

I've had them since adolescence!

BeastAngelMadwoman · 08/12/2025 10:01

Gosh I wish I'd got to 40 before having this problem- I've been getting them for years! They're a bloody pain, though there is something very satisfying about plucking out a stubborn one.

I absentmindedly pick at them with my nails all the time

Sassylovesbooks · 08/12/2025 10:05

I had chin hair before 40! I'm 51 and have a monthly eyebrow shape, lip and chin wax! 🤷
