How common is it for women over 40 to have chin hairs ?

I'm a 41 years old woman and I'm very embarrassed. I keep getting these chin hairs and I keep plucking them. I hear that unfortunately this can happen to women over 40 but I'm wondering how common is it.
Also what to do about it, other than plucking them with tweezers.

I've never hsd any stray facial hairs yet and I'm 50.

threescoops · 08/12/2025 06:55

It is so common as to be normal. I had a lot of electrolysis in my 30s which helped. Now I’m in my 60s I have my chin and upper lip waxed every 5 weeks or so, and pluck any intruders in between. You need really good tweezers and the best light is in the car, that’s usually where I notice a problem. Face hair does get finer and lighter with age. I have a horror of the post menopausal face fuzz, a halo of down. Very ageing and unattractive. Have you got any on your big toes yet? Hormones are bastards

Glowingup · 08/12/2025 06:57

Yeah I’d say this post is like women who cry when they find their first grey hair at 40. Babe, for most of us it starts WAY before that - you’re lucky to have made it this long. Think I was early 30s or even late 20s. I have nightmares about what would happen if I was in a coma and couldn’t pluck.

Hadalifeonce · 08/12/2025 07:07

Pretty lucky, I am 68 and don't have any. SiL, who is younger, has had them for years. She has been having laser treatment.

PersephoneParlormaid · 08/12/2025 07:08

I don’t have any (mid 50’s), but I do remember my mum constantly feeling her chin!

Allthings · 08/12/2025 07:09

I’m closer to retirement age than 40 and I have never had any.

Ifyouknowyouknowyouknow · 08/12/2025 07:09

First noticed them after I stopped bf my dc2
at about 34. I’m 38 now and have loads on my chin - a mix of dark and light coloured but wiry and very satisfying to pluck. Definitely hormone related as they seem to grow faster at certain times in my cycle. Moustache ones are still white blonde but every few months I’ll feel a wiry one…hoping they don’t spread there!

MyDeftDuck · 08/12/2025 07:14

Hey! Welcome to the world of weird and wild whiskers! Some are very fine and you hardly notice them until some kindly friend says you have a stray hair on your face, reaches out to remove it and shrieks with laughter when they realise that it’s actually attached to you! Others are dark and bristly and you can feel them as they covertly emerge from your skin defying all attempts to pluck them out……..you’re forced to either wait until they’re a little longer to be able to grip hold with the tweezers or succumb to shaving them which only takes off the surface growth leaving the root to manifest into a coarser, darker specimen all ready to emerge from your face at the most inconvenient moment!

CautiousLurker2 · 08/12/2025 07:21

It is so common that Amazon and Boots are chock full of epilators/lasers/shavers for ladies. It hasn’t made its way to main stream tv adverts like incontinence pads, but am sure it will do one day. It’s just one the last few women’s issues that no one discusses… yet. I’ve used an epilator on my top lip since mt late twenties. At that time I assumed I needed it due to PCOS but now in my 50s I now loads of ladies who mention using them.

That's the weird thing! There can be none at all and then one ultra long one appears from nowhere!

I think mine started early 40s. I've also had random long hairs appear on my cheek and forehead. The forehead one was more bristly. The good news is that I'm mid sixties now and haven't had any appear for a few years.

DP thought I had an eyelash stuck to my cheek but no, it was a cheek hair. Little bastard was also curled up and at least 1cm when unwound. Nobody warned me about cheek hairs 😟

Ponderingwindow · 08/12/2025 03:07

I think the better question to ask would be are there any women on this site over 40 who have yet to develop chin hairs?

Yes. Almost 62 and never had a chin hair. I use a magnifying mirror every day to check my face because I have rosacea and am prone to occasional blepharitis. Sometimes my skin is a mess, but no, absolutely no chin hairs. I didn't realise it was such a common thing.

PauliesWalnuts · 08/12/2025 07:24

I’m like @Wallywobbles - I first started getting them at 17 when I had a boy helpfully (not) point them out in the 6th form common room. I was diagnosed with PCOS in my twenties and started plucking then. By the time I was 40 I was going to electrolysis twice a week for 10 years or so. That slowed the growth down but I still go for laser every six weeks and will probably always have to do so - I treat it like a maintenance issue the same you would a haircut. I hate it, it makes me feel less feminine, and thank God for beauticians as 200 years ago I’d be the bearded lady in a travelling circus.

Youngatheart00 · 08/12/2025 07:25

Another victim of the chin hair here!

thankfully it’s just one or two but I agree they spring up out of nowhere.

Also have started to get long ‘pube like’ 🙈 hairs on the back of my thighs - IS THIS JUST ME

troppibambini6 · 08/12/2025 07:27

I’ve had a few for years (I’m 48) but recently they seem to have ramped up. I have few under my chin now and rather randomly one has now sprouted out of the middle of my cheek.
I’ve told my daughters if I ever end up in a coma you need to pluck them 🤣

stayok · 08/12/2025 07:27

I would have said I had none until I felt under my chin the other day and found one single hair- honestly it was about 2 inches long- very fine and blonde but freakishly long, and it was as if it had appeared overnight. What on earth is that about? Anyway, caution from now on.

Motherofacertainage · 08/12/2025 07:28

It’s so normal yet still such a taboo. In my 20s due to hormone issues I had really copious and dark chin and neck hairs. It was horrendous; I’ve had electrolysis, laser (v painful but effective) and latterly IPL. Due to earlier experiences I don’t actually mind the few hairs I get these days and a monthly visit to the lovely (very cost effective) threading ladies keeps it all at bay!

gamerchick · 08/12/2025 07:29

I got my first one at 16. It stayed single for quite a long time and then hooked up and started breeding. Now I get the odd one on my neck and even on my cheek.

You just have to keep on top of them.

Clarefromwork · 08/12/2025 07:30

Wait till you get one really really long eyebrow hair!

Greysowhat · 08/12/2025 07:30

Very common! I had 1 whisker that happened to be grey so I couldn't laser it away. I pluck it out whenever it makes an appearance. The more you pluck the weaker it gets and sometimes they just stop coming back. Mine has stayed away for the last few months. But it's unpredictable and might come back again.

arcticpandas · 08/12/2025 07:31

I guess I should consider myself lucky since mine are blond😅

MamainWonderland · 08/12/2025 07:32

If you are on TikTok or Instagram, look up ChuglyGirl2.0 and you will feel SO much better. She has a main account which is hilarious, but the 2.0 account is mostly dedicated to facial waxing and hair dye. Genuinely one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen: “what a crop, ladies and gentlemen”! Look her up, you won’t regret it. I realise that’s no help on the actual chin hair situation, but it will cheer you right up!

Oh god, yes, I have one that is at the back of my neck and amongst my irregular hairline so it's a real bother to puck out. I can feel it, I know it's there but I can't get a good grip on it without taking out some ordinary hairs with it.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 08/12/2025 07:34

Just wait until your eyesight deteriorates and you can’t see them clearly anymore, you can just feel them and fidget with them in meetings 😂

Seagullstopitnow · 08/12/2025 07:35

Don't be dissing my boring meeting fiddle toys!
Seriously though, once you find one, you can't stop touching it till it's gone!
Isn't the over 40 degeneration of eyesight wonderfully coincided with increase in chin hair? 😒

Thursday5pmisginoclock · 08/12/2025 07:38

Bought a laser hair device just for these alone! Trying to also tackle the migrating bikini line which is constantly going further south
