Mulberry Crossbody Bags - why do so many women have them?

LucyLoo1972 · 19/11/2025 06:12

I have never had a nice handbag denote being in an elite profession. I have noticed lots of women where I live have Mulberry crossbody bags. I looked them up and was so shocked at the price tag!! the women I see wearing them dont always look like they are filthy rich so I am intrigued as to why they spend so much on a handbag. Sorry if this is a weird question. Maybe its me becasue we have plenty of money but my husband would go batshit crazy if I said id like one of these and wanted to buy one.

Maybe they don’t have controlling husbands? I’m not filthy rich like you unfortunately but shock I have Gucci bags and my husband doesn’t control what I buy

I have 2 mulberry bags that I bought a long time ago, before they rebranded for the Chinese market and added extra zeros to the price tag. They’re well made and have lasted several decades now. I was shocked though, looking at one of the newer ones, to see how far the quality has dipped, so people are paying 3 times the price now for a worse bag.

I think sadly you are right. we had insane amounts of savings, I was achieving so much in my life to get a phd from an elite university coming form a background of poverty and trauma and I never felt I deserved anything. it was my money as well I realise too late. I denied myself so much.

My DH bought one for me, a few years back, it was a good investment, comes out every year.

CurlsLDN · 19/11/2025 06:32

I don’t have one, but of all the designer bags I think they are beautiful. If I had the money and wanted to spend it on a bag that would be my first choice. I imagine those women you see are the same - they can afford it and they like it

I love that he did that! my husabnd would never think to buy me anything like that. they do look like they are long-lasting. would oyu say the quality is still ok?

I got one as a 30th birthday present from my mum. Great investment as I use it all the time. It’s become a staple. I love mulberry.

The price point makes them accessible to a large number of people.

Can I ask you about that? I thought the price point would make them inaccessible. im realising my husabnd really is unbelievably tight as he is a high earner but would think its insane for me to spend that much on a bag even though I love bags!

Some people will have bought them “pre loved” as well.

@LucyLoo1972 its at least 10 years old now, so not sure when they were rebranded. It still looks great, more than happy with it. Next time I am in town I will pop to John Lewis and compare! Do you buy any bags? I know if I hadn’t got this I would have done a fair few bags by now of a similar style, not with Mulberry price tags, never really happy, but if you added cost of them together probably as much as a Mulberry one! I’m more of a buy less but get what I want kind of girl anyway, even if it means waiting a bit. I have worn the same earrings for last 25 years, never bother to look at any others since I got what I wanted in the first instance. So yes they were expensive back then but cost has evened out over the years. Work on your DH’s psychology!

yes - im like you. buy quality that lasts. He buys the absolute cheapest thigns ever and hey never last. He doesnt get it. His attitude to money put me under such a lot of stress - partly it was a facto in my having a terribel breakdwon.

Mulberry has always been considered accessible, sitting at the bottom of the 'triangle of luxury'. A lot of people would be happy to spend that amount on a bag while the most desirable brands sit far out of their reach.

Roverbarks · 19/11/2025 06:59

I’m not a fan of Mulberry generally. Find them really overrated as a brand.

But…I wanted a designer cross body bag for daily use. I went to Selfridges and browsed online and the only one that I liked that was simple enough but also looked nice was a Mulberry annoyingly, so ended up buying it.

Kitchenbattle · 19/11/2025 07:02

i just purchased my third one, it has nothing to do with my dh…it’s my money. Do you work @LucyLoo1972?

EffinMagicFairy · 19/11/2025 07:02

@LucyLoo1972 I’m sorry to hear that, then you need a bag to cheer you up, sometimes DH’s don’t need to know how much things cost!

Temporaryname158 · 19/11/2025 07:05

Do you have access to family money, if so you go and buy yourself one if you have so much in savings. If not this is financial abuse.

you don’t sound like your husband makes you happy - have you considered divorce?

Not now. I was an academic and then Had a horrific breakdwon eight years ago from anxiety. in therapy my counsellor raised the issue that my husband added a lot to the stress that led to the breakdwon. part of that stress was him not liking me spending money on certain thigns. it nearly killed me.

I received a bonus from work around 2008, my boss at the time said I expect you to go out and treat yourself Radiator go and get those Mulberry bags you’ve always wanted! So off I went and bought them!

WaneyEdge · 19/11/2025 07:06

Some of the ones you see are probably fake. Loads of people I work with buy fakes on holiday. You can’t really tell if you’re just glancing quickly in the street.

we dont have so much savings now becasue my breakdwon stole my ability to work form me. I loved my academic work so much. I do have soem inheritance money and I do buy myself nice thigns now. it all feels too late though as I lost everything in my life.

im sad becsue I was publishing books and achieving amazing thigns. I also lost five stone and barely treated myself to anythign new, my friends gave e their secondhand stuff. I should have treated myself. for Orem reason I never considered our money to be our money and that I could pen it on nice things. the tragedy is trough being skinflint it was a factor in my getting unwell and losing everything hat mattered to me. I was a fool.
