Buying the same item in different colours?

I've just bought the same long-sleeved t-shirt from Uniqlo in <cough> 6 different colours. It fits beautifully, is soft, warm and comfortable, and is great for when I want a casual, layered look.

However I've realised that my wardrobe also contains two identical cotton dresses (black / pale pink), two identical silk dresses (tomato red / navy blue), two pairs of Uniqlo jersey barrel legs (olive / black), two pairs of identical chino-style jeans (olive / navy), two identical linen dresses (blue / green), three identical cashmere sweaters (black / navy / beige), etc etc

Do you do this too? I can't decide whether this proves I know what suits me, or is just incredibly dull and unimaginative 😂

I've just started to this, in January sale brought 3 cashmere jumpers from John lewis i love the slightly different style of high low hem, high at front longer at the back, I brought one at first, and loved it so much went back and brought 2 more, marks and spencer thermals I always have a few of these in my stash, and around 3 of years ago marks did a pk of 2 high neck vests, they are the best I've had, I managed to buy a pk of white and black and pink pk.

I have only recently started doing this. I've been trying to be more intentional with my wardrobe to see which items pair well together and streamline it. I'm finally at a size I am happy with and maintaining it. I now have a better understanding of what works for my actual body shape.

I've just had my wardrobe fixed, so I had to empty it.

My long sleeve tops are all from Land's End, I have 12 all the same style, just different colours (and a couple of sizes)
My t-shirts, not quite as bad, but I have 6 from Seasalt that are the same style just different patterns. Then another 6 that are unique.
My trousers are like the animals on Noah's ark they come in pairs, usually 1 navy and 1 black.
My blouses, whilst not identical, are a particular style. I am phasing these out as I succeed in my weight loss journey, and will be looking for a new style.
Shoes are the same, I have 4 pairs of the same Nike trainer in different colours, another 4 pairs of a different brand, boots in black and brown.
It is rarer for me to have 1 of an item than at least 2.
On holiday this year, I found a new cap, liked it so much I went back and bought it in another colour
Found a top I liked, went back twice and got 2 more

In my defence having been overweight for years and finding clothes that suit me and I can bear to wear is not an easy task.

Just to finish up (posted too soon)

My plan as I reach my goal weight is a capsule wardrobe and I have no problem if that means 4 t-shirts that are all the same (possibly different colours) if they fit well and look good etc.

I have started doing this. I found a nice dress on eBay that is just as I like for work. Sleeveless so in the winter I can put thermal tops underneath. Flared. And the most important part: good pockets.

I liked the dress so much I thought I'd see if I could get a spare. I did. They do them in all sorts of colours. So I now have 7 in plain colours (navy, royal, turqouise, greeny-blue, green, maroon) and 3 or 4 with patterns on.

Makes me very happy as I can wear a different colour each day to work.

This is the story of my life.

I have five cashmere v neck jumpers is different colours, all from Pure. They fit well, wear well, suit my lifestyle and I live in them in the winter. Far from thinking that’s too many, I have my eye on four more.

Storynanny1 · 05/11/2025 18:19

me too! Once I’ve found something that suits I buy a spare!
4 Next linen shift dresses in different patterns
5 seasalt cord dresses - bought one in the new colourway for 5 years running
Uniqlo merino crew neck in 4 colours
Woolovers cashmere and merino cable jumpers in 4 colours
Same with shoes and sandals, once I find something that fits my horrid ugly feet complete with bunions I get every colour going

I definitely do this with certain items if I like them and they suit me (and Uniqlo makes it far too easy to do this!)

I have multiples of the White Stuff notch neck t shirts because they fit me well and wash well. I must have 6 of them. I think I bought the first two from White Stuff directly and then looked on Vinted for the others as it's easy when you know the exact item you're looking for.

Three Uniqlo v neck 3D knit jumpers in red, green and black.

Two Uniqlo wide legged jersey trousers in olive and navy.

Sketchers Uno trainers in both black and white.

I have really awkward feet and found some boots in Primark about 6 years ago that fit me brilliantly. I bought two pairs, put one at the back of the wardrobe and have just brought them out to replace the knackered first pair.

me too with the boots! I bought a pair of m and s long leather boots 5 years ago and went back to get an identical pair which like yours are waiting on the wardrobe to replace pair no 1 when they finally come to the end of their life!
Just done the same with a pair of navy reiker trainers - took me ages to find a navy pair which didn’t have a white sole so i’ve got a spare pair waiting

Denim4ever · 05/11/2025 18:31

I definitely buy in different colours when I find something I like. I'm tall and long limbed and if I find short or long sleeved items that fit well I buy in diff colours and even buy two in the same colour. I have one fine gauge knit in green, blue and black, a ribbed smart T in black, mustard and brown and doubly in navy. As for Uniqulo, I have 5 gilets 🤣 To be fair two were my mum's originally

ThatPinkShark · 06/11/2025 03:15

In fact, the most important thing about clothes is the cut. If a piece of clothing has a good cut, I will also choose a style of clothing and buy it in multiple colors.

LozzaCh0ps · 06/11/2025 17:46

OP I live in variations of the same jeans and tops. It’s my Steve Jobs uniform, only it hasn’t brought me success and bajillions in the bank 😒
