Buying the same item in different colours?

TheAlcott · 04/11/2025 17:48

I've just bought the same long-sleeved t-shirt from Uniqlo in <cough> 6 different colours. It fits beautifully, is soft, warm and comfortable, and is great for when I want a casual, layered look.

However I've realised that my wardrobe also contains two identical cotton dresses (black / pale pink), two identical silk dresses (tomato red / navy blue), two pairs of Uniqlo jersey barrel legs (olive / black), two pairs of identical chino-style jeans (olive / navy), two identical linen dresses (blue / green), three identical cashmere sweaters (black / navy / beige), etc etc

Do you do this too? I can't decide whether this proves I know what suits me, or is just incredibly dull and unimaginative 😂

OP posts:

Oh God, yes.

2 pairs identical DM boots, one in black, one in brown.

3 Cos long sleeved Ts - I’d buy more if they did them in more colours. They actually have them in quite a few, but about three quarters are colours that don’t suit me. Similar for their short sleeved Ts for summer.

2 Cos vest dresses for summer - 1 plain, 1 patterned.

Numerous Uniqlo heat tech tops for winter layering.

2 Uniqlo men’s merino polo necks - 1 black, 1 navy.

Good basics, basically.

Futurept · 04/11/2025 23:37

Yep I do this! Sometimes I'll buy the exact same item in the same colour as well if I really love it, just in case 😂
I'm really terrible at shopping though and tend to stick to the same plain 'uniform' - eg. Jeans/leggings and Hoodies, shorts and tshirts etc.

I do it with shoes as well, I have several pairs of New Balance 574s in different colourways

lingmerth · 04/11/2025 23:38

I have a wardrobe full of short sleeved, mid sleeved and long sleeved stripy Seasalt T-shirts. They’re such good quality, wash well, keep their colour and fit well. I guess it is a sort of uniform but I’m not very stylish and like that I always know what I can wear depending on the weather.

LuubyLuu · 04/11/2025 23:40

I own the same top as the OP in 4 different colours and plan to go back for more!
I bought them 6 months ago and have worn and worn them.

ButWhyMama · 05/11/2025 00:44

This is also me and I'm guilty of going onto Vinted to find certain clothes I already own in different colours, once they're no longer on sale on the original store. I just know what makes me comfortable!

Zen · 05/11/2025 01:08

I’ve got the same jeans in light and dark blue and black, they’re comfortable and flattering, they don’t really look that similar in the different colours. I’ve also got the same bra in 3 colours, it’s actually the only one I’ve found that fits properly since losing some weight and going down sizes. The matching knickers are not a flattering fit however!
Uniqlo kind of encourages this way of buying.

EmeraldRoulette · 05/11/2025 01:37

What's the sizing like in Uniqlo please?

I get the sense it's cut for very slim people

bridgetreilly · 05/11/2025 01:45

Only with very basic things like t-shirts, and not that often even with those. I like variety in my wardrobe!

FullOfMomsense · 05/11/2025 01:52

Yes, I buy good quality items and if they wash well and match my colour scheme I buy every shade that suits! There was a long time where active wear was shit, and I'd buy up multiple pieces from brands I'd find while in the US just to be stocked up for a couple of years.

Mainly now I buy good jumpers in every colour, and I'm fussy with shoes so have the same style in multiple colours (too many sometimes, my colour pallette is very neutral and I love a colourful heel with an all black outfit...)

Uniqlo is a Japanese brand, so likely the clothes are designed with the petite in mind.

You say 'likely', do you have any first hand knowledge or experience?

Uniqlo sells different cuts for the Asian and Western markets.

I'm 5'11, size 14 and buy most of my clothes from there, currently wear size L. I was previously size 16-18 and wore their XL. Some styles go up to XXL. I wear their size 29 or 30 jeans and they sell up to 34. Some of the pants/sleeves aren't long enough for me but that's the case in most clothing from most stores.

AussieManque · 05/11/2025 04:15

I do (did) this with Boden dresses - for the 3 styles I liked, I had them in at least 2 or 3 different patterns and colours. Also for shorts that fit well, I have 2-3 pairs that are the same model but different colours. Makes sense!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 05/11/2025 04:31

Yep, especially Seasalt stripy t-shirts, which I buy in pairs because they’re cheaper, M&S chinos and merino cardigans. I really wish you could know in advance when something is going to become a favourite, the thing you hook out of the wardrobe first, so that you could buy two of them.

Mmmcheese89 · 05/11/2025 05:05

If I know I'm going to be comfortable if something I often by duplicates. Sometimes in different patterns/colours. Sometimes just 2 identical dresses/tops so I don't have to worry about lol sundry turn around (I live alone so often only do one wash a week).

Mikart · 05/11/2025 06:35

I'm the same. I'm 6 feet tall so if something fits I get it in other colours...especially footwear, trousers and tops. I don't like prints particularly and my clothes last years.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/11/2025 06:57

Where are people finding nice jumpers that they buy on repeat? I’m struggling to even find one at the moment.

I’ll check out the Phase Eight rec - had been wondering about getting the black one. It’s been sitting in my John Lewis basket for weeks!

Nothungrycat · 05/11/2025 07:01

Yup. Also uniqlo, where I have 6 or 7 of their long sleeved cotton t-shirts in different colours. I wear them under their plaid shirts (currently have 5). I also have duplicates of their leggings for the gym, and their airism t-shirt dresses for the summer. I'm size 16/18 btw, and tend to wear their XL. I also regularly buy the same style of jeans in different colours - if I find a pair that fits then I'm going to buy them until they stop making them - currenlty have 3 pairs of one fatface style and 2 pairs of another...

TimSamandLulu · 05/11/2025 07:05

I don’t normally do this, but I’ve just done it with Uniqlo t-shirts too. Mine are cotton long sleeved crew neck. I got two colours in the shop and then was so pleased with them I bought three more online. The material is so thick, and I really struggle to get T-shirts that are long enough for my long body without being longline. These are perfect.

I would say pretty spot on. I am a size 10 so buy a small - fits perfect.

They used to be, but not any more. I am 5'7" size 10-12 and wear a S in the tops I linked to but thats because I like them to be slightly more fitted. Trousers are an M.

Seems like Uniqlo and Cos in particular have really cornered the multiple-buy market!

I still mourn the absolutely perfect jumper I bought on impulse, from Joules of all places (usually can't stand their stuff but I was bored waiting for a delayed train at Waterloo!) It was the perfect weight, length, cut and they've never done it again since. I've scoured Ebay and Vinted but no joy. Wish I'd bought 6 of them!

I do this too. I’ve got three coats which are identical bought years apart. I searched on eBay when the first one wore out. I found some great trousers in seasalt and have multiple pairs now .Its gutting when something you really like is discontinued. If I find something I really like I stockpile in different colours .

I long to find the perfect jumper. They are all acrylic and man made fibres or cut really badly.

I’ve always done this, I have seven dresses from Next in the same style but different prints. I’ve hunted a couple down on Vinted as they aren’t in Next anymore. I even have exactly the same one in two sizes, same print and everything.

My last purchases were a black and a white pair of the same style of sketchers and a black and a navy pair of identical joggers from Next.

None of my clothes are going to get lonely.

Edited

I bought the perfect dress from next a few years ago in the only two colours they had. I've worn them so much they are on their way out - I'm planning to take them to a seamstress and ask her to replicate them. But you've also given me the idea of Vinted!

UpMyself · 05/11/2025 08:06

@EmeraldRoulette , Uniqlo has a 'find my size' feature on the site. I find the clothes tend to fit me lengthwise and I'm 5'4" ish. I like my t-shirts to be long enough to tuck in.

I like Muji but the clothes run small.

CandidHedgehog · 05/11/2025 08:25

Yes. I basically wear one shirt every single day. I have literally 20 or so in multiple colours.

It works with jeans, with floaty skirts, with smart black trousers and a cardigan for work, with or without jumpers and on occasion under suits.

I was going to say it doesn’t work for formal occasions but I’ve just remembered I wore the black version to the last funeral I went to.

I also have 5 identical casual dresses in the same material as the shirt in 2 colours (I would buy more colours but they don’t do them).

They suit me, they are comfortable and they are reasonably priced so why not.
