Buying the same item in different colours?

I've just bought the same long-sleeved t-shirt from Uniqlo in <cough> 6 different colours. It fits beautifully, is soft, warm and comfortable, and is great for when I want a casual, layered look.

However I've realised that my wardrobe also contains two identical cotton dresses (black / pale pink), two identical silk dresses (tomato red / navy blue), two pairs of Uniqlo jersey barrel legs (olive / black), two pairs of identical chino-style jeans (olive / navy), two identical linen dresses (blue / green), three identical cashmere sweaters (black / navy / beige), etc etc

Do you do this too? I can't decide whether this proves I know what suits me, or is just incredibly dull and unimaginative 😂

I do this, but I’ve tried to pull back on it. I was buying things I liked in multiple colours, without thinking properly about whether the colours suited me or if they fitted with the rest of my wardrobe. Whereas now, if I like something and it comes in five colours, I’ll only buy the one or two colours that I know work for me - I won’t buy them all.

Dollyparot200 · 05/11/2025 08:55

I do this I just thought everyone did it too

ManyATrueWord · 05/11/2025 09:02

Doesn't everyone who knows their own style do this? I have one dress in five different colours. It's only a cotton dress from TikTok but the style suits me.

KittyMacNitty · 05/11/2025 09:10

I definitely do this but a worse version. When I used to get something in several colors I'd find I'd only wear 1 or 2 of them and leave the other colors in the drawer / wardrobe.

So now I go out of my way to buy multiples in the SAME color.

I have the same black trousers x 3, the same blue sweatshirt x 5 (!!)
and all my socks are the same green.

I think there's definitely something odd going on.

I bought the perfect dress from next a few years ago in the only two colours they had. I've worn them so much they are on their way out - I'm planning to take them to a seamstress and ask her to replicate them. But you've also given me the idea of Vinted!

You’ve given me the idea to have some made, thank you.

FastTurtle · 05/11/2025 09:23

My middle DS does it too!

Cantonet · 05/11/2025 09:40

Yes, me too.
I have 6 cashmere m&s cardigans that I buy new off eBay. Last year's were beige, taupe, navy, black. This years colours are olive & red.
And also multiple u neck warm cotton T's from Muji

EmeraldRoulette · 05/11/2025 10:06

Thanks for the information on Uniqlo

I do sometimes buy two of things in a different colour and I will probably do that more because it's increasingly hard to find something that you like that much. Or at all!

Member984815 · 05/11/2025 10:09

If it fits well and looks good I don't see the harm in it

caringcarer · 05/11/2025 10:21

I find a summer dress that fits well and is a good length on me then buy several in different colours/prints. I do the same with shoes too if I find a sandal that is really comfortable I buy 4 or 5 pairs in different colours.

BestIsWest · 05/11/2025 10:21

Same. If you find something good why not. Even the same colour.
Fitflop trainers in 3 colours (and two pairs in one colour) and the same boots in 2.
Seasalt Tern Tide cardigan in 2 and contemplating another.

I have a merino jumper in silver grey from Monsoon that I love so much I now have 5 of them, having stalked it on Vinted over the years.

ToadRage · 05/11/2025 10:26

I never used to do this but I find as I get older I do. If you find something you like why not? I have an 'outfit' in 3 different colours is a long lone asymmetrical top with an contrasting frilly skirt, the red top came with a green skirt, the green top came with red skirt and the purple top came with red skirt but i often where it with the green.

BestIsWest · 05/11/2025 10:31

Oh, also cashmere snoods from John Lewis. I have 3. Moths got the fourth. They are round my neck pretty much full time from November to March.

GameOfJones · 05/11/2025 10:36

I definitely do this with certain items if I like them and they suit me (and Uniqlo makes it far too easy to do this!)

I have multiples of the White Stuff notch neck t shirts because they fit me well and wash well. I must have 6 of them. I think I bought the first two from White Stuff directly and then looked on Vinted for the others as it's easy when you know the exact item you're looking for.

Three Uniqlo v neck 3D knit jumpers in red, green and black.

Two Uniqlo wide legged jersey trousers in olive and navy.

Sketchers Uno trainers in both black and white.

I have really awkward feet and found some boots in Primark about 6 years ago that fit me brilliantly. I bought two pairs, put one at the back of the wardrobe and have just brought them out to replace the knackered first pair.

lalaloopyhead · 05/11/2025 11:08

I have realised I do this a lot if I find something I like/looks falttering - I do try to think about it a bit more now because in some instances I will wear the first one alot more, because obviosuly it was the colour I was most drawn originally.
I have 6 pairs of jeans that are the same style but 3 different colours in 2 different sizes each!

Epidote · 05/11/2025 11:12

Yes, all the time. If I find something I like I get the same stuff in different colours.

nomas · 05/11/2025 11:25

Yes, I do too, but the same item, in multiple sizes, as I yoyo so much!

Bonjamin · 05/11/2025 11:32

I do this with jeans, if I find a flattering cut - one pair regular length for wearing with trainers/flats, second pair long length for boots/heels.

Mary28 · 05/11/2025 12:48

Yes I do this all the time.

outerspacepotato · 05/11/2025 13:07

Yes, I've done it. Uniqlo tends to fit me well so if something that I will wear a lot works, I'll buy it in different colours. I've done it with heat tech, their jeans, and I have 2 of those skipper blouses, they're great.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 05/11/2025 13:21

UpMyself · 04/11/2025 17:53

I do it too but usually duplicates.

Same for me. I will buy things that work well for me in different colors but also duplicates of things in the same color. I have a somewhat hard to fit body (tall, but short waist and long legs) so if it fits well and is flattering, I will sometimes buy an exact duplicate.

Giggorata · 05/11/2025 13:38

Not only do I do this, if the shape and material are what I want, but I sometimes buy two in exactly the same colour and dye one of them to a colour I like..

I've just bought two striped dresses from Gudrun in different colours, as a treat and I have quite a few pairs of trousers in a shape I like from Laundry B, all dyed In jewel colours, as the shades available didn't suit me.

jenny38 · 05/11/2025 14:52

Yes, have just ordered my 4th seasalt terntide cardigan.
Do this with trousers, jeans, trainers and boots too.
I think it's because so much shopping is online now. I tend to play it safe, because it's such s faff on sending stuff back.

BoarBrush · 05/11/2025 14:58

I do this all the time with jeans. Have 8 pairs of the same cord flares as they fit perfectly. It's really hard to find tops that fit properly so if I find one, I'm buying several.

Wish I could find the perfect jumper, absolutely none fit. They're all so giant even in the smallest of sizes.

Lovemycat2023 · 05/11/2025 15:00

Absolutely. I have the same basic M&S jumper in four colours and their wide leg jersey trousers in three. Suits my style, nice and soft (I am very sensitive to seams), the trousers come in short, and means I don’t have to spend ages shopping. Often wear them for work (a bit like a uniform).
