Skirt/ jumper look. Am I too big for it? Or doing it wrong

Honestly, I like how this looks on other people but I am not sure if I am doing it right.

Pics are bad, we only have 1 proper mirror pushed into the spare room at the min. That's just the dress, jumper tucked and jumper untucked. Then in the wild.

I'm just not sure I pull it off.

Forget the jumpers and cardigans with the dress completely - maybe a nice scarf with it

Agree with this - add some thin base layers if it’s cold and a thin trench type or wool coat plus if you love chunky knits a scarf would be perfect.

I don't want to seem like I am digging for compliments, but do you actually think I have a nice figure? I have always been self conscious and more so now after 2 c-sections and 'letting myself go'.

I would normally stick to a tight fitting bottoms and a looser top. Namely leggings and a hoody 😂

Yes you have a good shape, OP, and balanced proportions. I'm ACHING to give you a makeover and put you in clothes that are more flattering and either fashion-forward, or timelessly classic (or a combination of both). What you're doing currently is neither.
I'd go with someone else's suggestion of getting a personal shopping consultation.

RedRoss86 · 29/10/2025 12:33

OP I have the same shape as you & I find dressed that have the waist cut so high makes the dress flair over my hips and makes me look wider than I am.

I love your knitted jumper. That would go perfect with the jeans you had on 🙌

And when you add the little belt to the dress, it emphasised your waist, looks great!
I think denim jacket works best too :)

Yes, genuinely! I think it's just about dressing for the figure you have. Chunky white or cream cable knit jumpers are not for the likes of us because they add body and we already have that. You want stuff that points to your waist. I think the white drapy cardigan worn open looks great with the dress. I would avoid boxy horizontal stripes. Personally I think the jeans would look ace with the right top. Typically with jeans, I am wearing quite a nippy T shirt and then I might have either a longline cardigan or a waist-skimming cardigan with a V neck open over the top.

One thought, @pontipinemum, if you’re going to be buying more clothes - I’d suggest you consciously avoid buying any more cotton items until next Spring. Everything you’ve shown so far seems to be made of the same fabric and to be completely honest swathes of cotton in Winter are unlikely to make anyone look well dressed.

You need more seasonal fabrics - heavier wool, mohair, cord (yes cotton, but essentially seasonal), heavy silk or satin, velvet, tweed, wool flannel, suede, leather. You will automatically look more luxuriously and intentionally dressed with even one piece in every outfit, but a mixture would be even better.

I looked up some of the department stores to see about using their personal stylist. I can't see any appointments at all for this year. But there is a personal stylist in one of the really big shopping centres about an hour from where I live. I think I will try and book her. She charges €50 per hour. I think it would be worth it

I think the skirt needs to be a more flowy material and the jumper tends to be cropped and the skirt high-waisted when it looks great, sadly it doesn't look good on me I wish it did, I often see people in their autumn skirt/boot/polo neck and check jacket combo and sigh wistfully in my leggings 😆

So a cropped jumper not a rolled one as that makes it look thicker and a high waisted skirt for sure.

Luckyingame · 29/10/2025 12:41

Unfortunately, this doesn't work on you, OP.
I'll stick to this, otherwise if critical I'm sure my comment would be reported.

Gannety · 29/10/2025 12:45

You have a lovely figure and the dress really suits you but I don't think that jumper works. It's too bulky which is making you look a bit shapeless (when you aren't at all!) and because the colour is such a bright white it draws all the focus and makes you look top heavy.

I would go for a jumper in a lighter weight fabric and in a tonally coherent colour, or an open cardigan.

Homegrownberries · 29/10/2025 12:55

You look 4 sizes smaller in the jeans. That's a really good look on you. Ditch the dress. It's just adding lots of unnecessary fabric. A closer fit looks fab on you.

RedRoss86 · 29/10/2025 12:55

Just read all of your updates OP, we have the same measurements 😅

I'm a 14-16 on top and same on bottom.
It really depends on what my boobs and bum fit into!

I have 3 kids and I used to have a 'rocker / hippy style' ... guess in some elements I still do.

What works for me are;

Flaired jeans - I got some wide leg in Dunnes recently and they look great on.
Boot cut - Tried on so many shapes and sizes in M&S and boot cut looked best.
Mid to high waist - I can't be dealing with hooshing my jeans up. I need the belly covered & comfy 😅

V neck tops are your friend.
If I put on anything that isn't V neck, it just doesn't sit right on the gals. V neck to me is just so flattering.

If you stock up on a few pairs of jeans and some V neck basics, you've made a start on building your wardrobe!

I'd then pair the white open jumper you had on with a basic v neck top.

In Dunnes aswell, they do lots of V neck vest like tops in the underwear department. I like to wear these tucked into jeans and under a top as it just smooths me out a bit.

I also recently found a brand called Love and Roses on Next - they have really pretty clothes and are really flattering & nice quality.

It will take time to build up your wardrobe but you are making a start.
Every month I try to buy 2-3 new items as after my 3rd child, my style & shape changed again and it's taken me a while to find what suits me again.

Happy shopping 😅😁

EcruCardigan · 29/10/2025 12:23

@Irenesortof , kindly, but why use that phrasing when you know how it is interpreted?

It was a joke. And irony doesn't always come over well on SM. The joke was that I was about to be somewhat negative by agreeing with OP that she hasn't developed her dress sense. But basically I wanted to encourage her to get good advice because she could look fabulous in the right clothes - which is not at all negative.

Irenesortof · 29/10/2025 12:57

pontipinemum · 29/10/2025 12:28

I'm in Ireland, Republic, I'm close to NI though there might be a John Lewis up there.

I know some of the bigger shops in Dublin did things like that. I should just go over and ask someone to pick out my clothes.

That's great OP. I think you are in for some very nice surprises.

Cantonet · 29/10/2025 12:57

Gosh, I've just seen the original photo you posted & I thought you were around a size 22. Only to read on & find out you're a size 14-16. Your clothes are very unflattering ( sorry) , because they're completely hiding your shape. You've got a lovely hourglass figure underneath all the bundles of clothing. Can I suggest watching some of the Melissa murrell videos on YouTube on dressing different body shapes. She's also worth following on Instagram too. I think she has several stylists who will do an online consultation for you at a very reasonable price. It would probably end up saving you money by avoiding buying too many wrong buys.
I think we all have to re-find ourselves after life changes & pregnancy & childbirth is one of the biggies.
It's so difficult to grapple with the changes in shape & lifestyle. And a little help is so useful.

PixieandMe · 29/10/2025 13:03

I think you just need a bit of a puffy sleeve on the jumper or cardigan (on the shoulders) to lift the whole thing slightly.

You look great. I love the jumper/skirt combination.

Foodylicious · 29/10/2025 13:06

Wierdfish do some good tunic style dresses. You might like something like this maybe?
I usually get them in the sale or as ex wierdfish on Ebay.
Look what I found on Etsy: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/4384614164/weird-fish-womens-starshine-organic?ref=share_v4_lx

UnintentionalArcher · 29/10/2025 13:11

Is this a dress rather than a skirt? From the pics it looks like one piece. I quite like the way a chunky jumper can be tucked into a skirt (e.g. just a small tuck at the front) whereas if this is a dress, you don’t have that option so it sort of hangs down.

Latitudeohyeah · 29/10/2025 13:13

To me , you have a problem with the lengths of your clothing-because you have a curves, the oversized clothes basically swallowed you.
This look would work for somebody who is tall and very slim.

I’m the same body shape like you.

I would go for shorter dress, but the most crucial thing is you need some sort of cleavage dress and regards to the jumper- I would go with button up cardigan.
Let it either unbuttoned till half or completely unbuttoned.

LillyPJ · 29/10/2025 13:16

I love the dress! The jumper looks too shapeless with it. I think a boxy cropped jumper or jacket would look good with it - needs to be something more structured. Either that or something fitted.

AnnaPhylax · 29/10/2025 13:19

Dress is awful shape, waist is cut too high.

wand3rer · 29/10/2025 13:29

Where is the dress from? It suits you perfectly and it's exactly what I'm looking for 😊

TwinklyStork · 29/10/2025 13:29

pontipinemum · 29/10/2025 10:10

OK thanks everyone. I've pulled out a few other idea's from my wardrobe. I also got new jeans.

I posted on here last week. I absolutely need an update to my wardrobe. I have been either pregnant or breastfeeding since 2020. I have lived in leggings and huge hoodys.

I want to feel nicer in how I look, but for it also to be a pretty quick thing to achieve. I work 3 days a week, have 2 toddlers and live on a farm!!

I have to keep the rust dress, I wore it to the pumpkin patch. I have it in navy as well though and can return that.

Excuse the slippers.

I love it with the oatmeal cardigan - see how it shows off your waist and that lovely hourglass shape?
The denim is lovely too but the cardigan would be easier to wear indoors.

That is such a pretty colour, especially against your hair and skin colour!

Denim jacket and boots with a scarf to warm it up and you’ll look gorgeous!

fruitbrewhaha · 29/10/2025 14:06

Have a search for midsized fashion on instagram. There are loads of ideas there.

cityanalyst678 · 29/10/2025 14:09

As others have said…
Tuck a tighter jumper in, maybe a plain black/ navy or brown. That big jumper does not do you any favours.
With your curvy figure, also try wide leg trousers with a neat jumper tucked in. I think you will look great x
