Skirt/ jumper look. Am I too big for it? Or doing it wrong

Honestly, I like how this looks on other people but I am not sure if I am doing it right.

Pics are bad, we only have 1 proper mirror pushed into the spare room at the min. That's just the dress, jumper tucked and jumper untucked. Then in the wild.

I'm just not sure I pull it off.

The dress is lovely but this looks horrendous. And not because of your size, it just looks ridiculous.
A jacket or long cardigan would go far better with the dress.

StopGo · 29/10/2025 16:19

@pontipinemum have you tried somewhere like a very large Dunnes Stores? The huge one at Cornelscourt has some great ideas and enough room to push a buggy round.

ClaredeBear · 29/10/2025 16:23

The red dress is fab on you but I agree with other that the jumper might be too big. I don’t think many people could carry that combo off. And yes to large jumper/small skirt - small jumper/big skirt 😊

BengalBangle · 29/10/2025 16:39

It is a bit too 'Handmaid's Tale'.

user2255679541 · 29/10/2025 16:41

I'm really surprised by the love for that dress. You look great in the jeans - I'd like to see them with that white sweater with a bit of the (much despised on here) French tuck. But I don't think the dress is doing anything for you. It's several inches too long and the waist is far too high, obscuring your fantastic natural waist, it's highlighting boobs and stomach. I think you'd look absolutely fantastic in something like the photo at the bottom of page 1 posted by @QueenOfToast or the one I've attached.

I know it's hard when you're breastfeeding/weaning, but I also think a good bra fitting would work wonders in terms of how your clothes fit.

It's hard finding your style groove after several years of pregnancy and breastfeeding. You're doing great and you have a cracking figure!

Am I missing something about the red dress? I think it's awful, too long and completely the wrong shape for the OP's body.

Only that the OP has already said she's keeping it as it's already been worn, so being rude about it isn't really all that helpful at this stage.

WonderingWanda · 29/10/2025 17:01

The jeans fit nicely except they are a bit short, they could do with being slightly longer to elongate your leg.

I'm not convinced by the dress or any of the jumpers with them. It's too baggy and voluminous so it's makes you look bigger than you are. The empire line isn't really working for you.

I think a more structured belted skirt and a finer knit jumper would work better.

This one would be versatile. https://www.simplybe.co.uk/shop/p/be641?optionSize=10

V necks work well with a larger bust.

I don't think telling her it looks great is all that helpful either; I'd rather people were honest about my clothes if I ask for an opinion.

Christmaschristmas · 29/10/2025 17:37

@pontipinemum Sorry, no helpful advice as I'm not very good at putting outfits together.

Think you have a lovely figure though and the rust dress is really nice on you.

For some reason, the navy isn't as nice and those jeans are doing you dirty, you definitely deserve better than those!

It's a bit overwhelming to start with, but I think your idea of a personal shopper session is good, as once you have a couple of really solid outfits, you'll be able to build on those.

Best of luck with it! 🌺

TheGander · 29/10/2025 17:38

Frumptastic. Sorry. A short cardigan would look better IMO.

Zov · 29/10/2025 17:40

The dress looks nice on you, and you're not 'too big' for anything @pontipinemum BUT I don't think that jumper goes with it at all!

JMO.

ForAzureSeal · 29/10/2025 17:44

I really like Lottie Drynan on insta for anti-body shape strictness. She champions dressing for comfort and joy. I liked you're original combination with the jumper tucked and sleeves rolled up. Some colourful socks or tights and nice trainers or clogs and you're golden. Enjoy!

Londonmummy66 · 29/10/2025 17:58

The Burgundy wrap cardigan a PP linked would work well on you - if it looks too booby wear it over a ballet neck tshirt from Uniqlo - it gives you covereage but keeps the flattering v shape. I think the look you were aiming for is like this cardigan and skirt combination - it works in this picture as the cardigan is cropped to the waist whereas yours are all either too long or rolled which creates bulk at the waist which is the last place you want it. https://www.johnlewis.com/jigsaw-textured-jersey-cord-cardigan-jacket-red/p114229363

I don’t like the red dress at all, sorry, with or without the jumper.

The jumper and green cardigan should both be okay with jeans for day to day wear, but I think the jeans you’ve chosen look a bit too short. Maybe try the jeans with a looser v neck T-shirt and then the cardigan worn open over it.

awaynboilyurheid · 29/10/2025 19:15

Love the dress but no belt and def no baggy jumper over it, jeans not working for me either how about some wide leg casual trousers ?

CinnamonCinnabar · 29/10/2025 19:23

I'm going to be shouted down but I really don't like long voluminous dresses with long sleeves plus a high neck - I just think it's so much fabric it drowns everyone including fashion models. But I seem to be the only person who likes knee length these days!

The rose dress looks lovely with the black belt but any additional layer needs to be fitted and cropped - like the little cropped jackets over an empire line dress in Pride & Prejudice.

If I worked on a farm I'd have a farm wardrobe of purely practical kit, then nicer clothes for non-working days. The outsize jumper could look lovely with leggings or your new jeans -a loose shape on top balanced by the slimmer leg.

Are leggings with knee high horsey style boots and a long line jumper or tunic an option? You could add a belt for more waist definition or go for a mini length dress plus leggings.

Going into winter with little kids and a farm my priority would be a stylish coat as you'll be outside so much of the time anyway.

I looked up some of the department stores to see about using their personal stylist. I can't see any appointments at all for this year. But there is a personal stylist in one of the really big shopping centres about an hour from where I live. I think I will try and book her. She charges €50 per hour. I think it would be worth it

On the small chance you are talking about Shirley in Blanchardstown Shopping Centre she is really good.

If I were you, I would ask anyone who is buying you a Christmas present that you want an hour with her. (Prob need 2 max).

Go dressed in your favourite outfit, maybe even that dress and ask her to recommend jumpers or cardigans that work with it.

Also bring photos of your other favourites in your wardrobe, preferably with you wearing them and ask her to find flattering matches to wear with them too.

It is a bit too 'Handmaid's Tale'.

This is all I can see. I have no fashion sense to assist with though, so I’ll leave now.

LillyPJ · 29/10/2025 20:23

@CinnamonCinnabar Snap! I thought I was the only person who liked knee-length!

abracadabra1980 · 29/10/2025 20:28

Jumper needs to be ‘boxy’ shaped one-ie much shorter in length and not much elastic round the bottom.

EcruCardigan · 29/10/2025 20:31

Disagree. Boxy shapes don't work on hourglass figures.

FullOfMomsense · 29/10/2025 21:19

Get on pinterest and find people with your body type with outfits you want to recreate. Pinterest is great if you're specific and use their filters, and then the algorithm knows what you like.

henlake7 · 29/10/2025 22:24

I love that dress, Def something I'd wear .I do love oversized flouncy dresses, especially paired with some sort of knitted tank or waistcoat. Or with a cropped boxy knit.
As others have said it's hard to pull off an all over sized slouchy look unless you are tall and very slim, it tends to hide any curves as well and can make you look bigger.

A stylist sound like a brilliant idea. They can help you find shapes that will really flatter your figure.
TBH none of the knits were for me. Not quite big and boxy enough to be oversized and not fitted enough to be stylish....just kinda 'ok'.

Violinist64 · 29/10/2025 23:07

You have a lovely hourglass figure and the dress on ìts own really flatters it. The denim jacket looks good with it, too. The jumper is too big and bulky and swamps you, making you look much bigger than you actually are. It needs to be worn with trousers or jeans. On you, the jumper is for more casual wear. I think the only people for whom the big jumper over a dress look would work would be tall, very slender people without curves. I think you would need a thinner jumper over an A-line or pleated skirt. Fifties iinspired clothes would look fabulous on you.
