Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

It looks like they have all damaged their skin barrier.

Glass skin is what you’re seeing and it basically isn’t achievable for anyone over 29 imo, and not for quite a few under 29 either.

I am no expert but would imagine it requires quite a lot of exfoliation eg glycolic acid. And then lots of moisturiser. And then something glowy like the Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter.

It's achievable with the right genes.

Post dermaplane facial, young folks will compliment me on my glass skin for about a fortnight. Well moisturised, smooth and fur-free. (I'm in my mid-40s).

@AliceMaforethought is entitled to her opinion and she wasn’t rude. It was you who attacked her directly. If you are uber sensitive to views different to your own you shouldn’t be on mumsnet. I’m a menopausal woman and I wasn’t in the least offended.

I've been on MN for 18 years, so I'm familiar with the landscape, thanks.

I'm neither offended, nor 'uber sensitive.' I saw a misogynistic comment by that poster and referred to it as such.

Absolutely fine that you don't share that POV.

My cousin had skin that looked almost transparent...this is going back many years before these products were around. Hers wasnt shiny but was amazing. I think they called it porcelain skin. I also knew a vegan who had similar skin. But it was entirely natural.

I'm Irish skinned, incredibly pale (my foundation was designed for people with albinism but all the other ones like porcelain and fine have way too much or a yellow or pink base) people always said I looked 'deathly ill' as a child as I have no real 'undertone' except the blue of my veins.

In the shower I often turn completely see through though like my skin is clingfilm and you can see all the details of every vein and tendon in my arms and chest etc... its really freaky and strange. Then I get out and dry up/cool off and go back too looking like milk.

I don't find the glass skin trend looks like that though, they just look greasy/sweaty too me not see through.

To the PPs on here saying it’s offensive and misogynistic to dislike Botox / trout pout / Vaseline face…. It’s not, it’s just an opinion on what looks nice or ridiculous. Mumsnet is a forum for expressing opinions. There are many things in fashion that are judged ridiculous by some onlookers. I’m thinking of those lads with jeans slung so low they can barely walk. Some people need some perspective on what’s offensive nowadays.

Thank you! I am 42, so not a million miles away from the menopause myself. There was nothing remotely 'misogynistic' about my comment, @CharlotteAnnaFitz was clearly looking for something to be offended by, like far too many people on this site.

If she said menopausal women who do Vaseline face are mad, sad, deluded old trouts that would be misogynistic and ageist to boot. Because these are tropes aimed specifically at old women. Saying they would look ludicrous is just a statement of opinion. Men can look ludicrous, and people of all ages and babies and pets. It’s not specific to old women. And actually Vaseline face isn’t specific to women al all - there are men doing it. Although I’ve not seen anyone old doing it because as @AliceMaforethought says, it would look ridiculous.

So many people on here want to police opinions, completely missing the point of this forum. If I think massive drawn on eyebrows look awful then I’ll say it. I’m happy for others to say I’m wrong and they look beautiful.

Eh? Why IS it misogynistic to call them mad or deluded on the basis of menopause, but NOT misogynistic to call menopausal women ludicrous for following a certain skin regimen?

Why does the nature of the insult or 'opinion' put it in one camp or the other? To ascribe any negative trope on women purely because of being menopausal - and therefore a woman - is precisely the thing that makes the comment misogynistic.

I'm a lesbian, sweetheart. I wouldn't worship a penis if you paid me to. I just think it's incredibly sad that you're disgusted by the body of the person you profess to love. I expect you'll end up very lonely one day when he leaves you for someone who doesn't make him feel like he has to cover up the second he's on show.

I note you worshipped a penis long enough to have one repeatedly stuck up you to make a baby, though, so...

I saw someone at a train station whose face literally looked slick with a thick layer of Vaseline. Like she’d been set in aspic.

lol 😂

I think Rachel Markle had that “look” at the Paris fashion week.

ChoppingSea · 13/10/2025 17:25

Now, apparently, this thread is about “penis worship” 🙄

I find it so interesting how we attribute a lack of wrinkles with luck.

I feel lucky to age, wrinkles shouldn’t matter.

Our obsession with youth is why people in thier 30’s are getting Botox.

Well, not luck really but as I said no wrinkles here at 60. Never smoked, not that keen on alcohol and always use high factor sun tal lotion on face.
Wrinkles aren't a problem botox at such young ages is. What the heck are their faces going to look like at 40/50 and beyond? How many are going to regret it ?

ChoppingSea · 13/10/2025 17:28

PixieandMe · 12/10/2025 12:06

It’s Botox. All the 20 and 30 year old’s at my work have it done.

That’s depressing.

What the heck, so if you're like me why even start an argument? I'm Asexual. I also don't do fellatio or touch male privates where I can help it but that doesn't mean I don't love this person and similarly he wouldn't want to see my private parts. The other day I was changing a lightbulb without being dressed and he walked in and I said "Sorry about the view" and he laughed (and so did I!) It's not something we're super-sensitive about. He wouldn't want to touch me intimately and I'm totally fine with that, no way would I ask him to or get my bits out or something. If we have PIV afterwards we look at each others faces and chat and laugh and get cleaned up. I also think part of natural inclination towards modesty means we naturally wish to cover ourselves.

Chinsupmeloves · 13/10/2025 17:40

I've noticed this as well and assumed it was some sort of glow serum/contour highlight? I agree only flawless young skin could get away with it but is also the type which doesn't need it! Oh the irony lol 😆

Botox, fillers, and face-lift. It will all melt at some point.

Look to the now natural-faced Pamela Anderson. I think she's quite striking.

A gently aged face, is a beautiful face. However, I too would love to know a more educated answer to this 🤣. I am reaching for the fillers&botox...I haven't as of yet...but ooooh the temptation!

I use Dove soap and Olay renewal cream. Every day, and GiveMe cleanser and eye cream.

I would love to know about a firming, face-lift cream, though. I do look younger than my young age of 40. Apparently 🤐.

MoonWoman69 · 13/10/2025 18:03

Looks horrible and greasy to me. I don't think it's a flattering look at all, at any age!

Cocobutter or vaseline on their faces

Bringchocolate · 13/10/2025 18:12

Maybe they’ve all been watching Emily in Paris and are using lubricant on their faces??

platinumanddiamonds · 13/10/2025 18:18

Is it not just the Botox look
