Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

for those asking for pics: first pic is what I imagine this is what they are aiming for with the whole glass skin / clean girl makeup trend (was originally a Korean beauty trend) second image is the reality which is a bit overkill irl (and I don’t even think this is too ‘bad’ an example!!)

The second irl picture of glass skin and lip filler with scraped-back hair is EXACTLY what a young woman looked like in a pub. She looked so odd that I couldn’t help but sneak looks at her. I now understand what she was aiming for

BluntPlumHam · 13/10/2025 18:26

Op, there’s only one product that will give you glass untextured skin and that is retinol/tretinoin.

Hotchocolateandsnow · 13/10/2025 18:29

It’s a shame this wasn’t in fashion when I was a teenager and had the most greasy skin I would have been on trend!

JennyWrenSeven · 13/10/2025 18:34

At my ripe old age (55) I tried NOT to achieve the fucking shiny look due to having an exceptionally greasy T zone! If a greasy O zone is the way forward, thank fuck I’m finally drying up……everywhere 🤣

Indeed, could have done with larger bums being in fashion then too!

Mylifesadrama · 13/10/2025 18:53

I can achieve that look quite instantly. It’s called menopausal flush and a sweaty face with me!

Pliudev · 13/10/2025 18:57

Jones Road Beauty Balm. A bit sticky but applied carefully it brightens without attracting flying insects, as I discovered when I persevered.

omg this comment took me back 40 years to a school pal whose mother was a very sweet very strange alcoholic lady.

She'd slather vaseline all over her face and walk around reflecting all the light in the room. She'd also prepare us these weird 1970's style snacks and bring them in on a tray like we were her treasured guests. At 14 this was beyond odd. My friend spoke of moving to live with her father one day soon and she did finally get to go live with him.

The glass skin look today is exactly how she looked LOL. I will say she didn't have ANY wrinkles and she drank and smoked like a champ so maybe the vaseline worked idk

Yes, I believe this was (is) a thing. Doris Day used to cover her whole body once a week with Vaseline and go to bed with it on. And Marilyn Monroe used it as a moisturiser. But the vaseline was a treatment and not day make up.

I can understand teenager girls copying this look but why does any woman think this is a good look?

RavenhairedRachel · 13/10/2025 19:26

I think the trend now is to look all sweaty and greasy. A few years ago the look was khaki coloured or in need of a good wash

I think Botox makes the face much much shinier….. Girls are having it in their late teens these days. Crazy!

Yes! I was at a hotel this weekend and the am at breakfast saw this look a lot!! Very freshly scrubbed, no make up and paired with lip filler

I think the skin on their faces looks distressed and the lips look sore, it’s like their whole faces are tight and stretched, add in brows laminated vertically and we have reached a whole new level of weird.

Milosc · 13/10/2025 20:05

Korean skincare promotes a glass skin look. If used correctly it does help minimize pores and get rid of old skin cells so skin is softer and looks fresher. Oil based serums at the end lock in moisture as well making skin appear glassy and more glowy. BB creams instead of foundation will give a similar finish. It is not supposed to look oily or waxy like Vaseline but more of a healthy skin glow. Tik Tok just got carried away and made it into a really weird fad. Its been a thing for a long, long time.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 13/10/2025 20:06

Seen this up close and personal and can confirm it’s a mix of botox and facial treatments like peels so more medical grade than someone just slathering Elemis oils on your face!. Botox alone can’t achieve it - as all things do it costs a lot of money and needs to be done regularly so for the rich and famous!

3luckystars · 13/10/2025 20:09

What’s so bad about having pores?
I do wear glasses I admit but I don’t think in
my life i have ever noticed someone
else’s pores!

JohnTheRevelator · 13/10/2025 20:10

Scrubbed raw? Ouch. Sounds distinctly painful.

Goosyloosy · 13/10/2025 20:11

I think the look could easily be achieved with a Brillo pad and a tub of Vaseline

I agree and it’s starting to get a bit like the crowd in the Hunger Games.

I saw a girl earlier today and her lips looked so painful. Some of the eyebrows look really mad too. There is a trend here of wet looking eyebrows now, it looks like the eyebrow dye has been left on. It’s really shocking looking.

Endorewitch · 13/10/2025 20:33

Simple answer. Botox!!Too much botox gives your face a tight shiny look. You may have noticed you only see shiny faces which dont have any wrinkles.
I notice in the Soaps that a character is written out for a while and comes back with a taunt shiny wrinkle free face. Botox and possibly face lift.
Eg. Chaz in Emmerdale .

How can they afford it? Isn't it super expensive?

This! It’s supposed to be glowy not shiny like a wax work dummy. But between Botox and social media they have taken it way off the scale.

I don’t particularly care about my pores but when i use certain Korean products like the collagen wrap mask and certain moisturisers my skin looks very glowy, or if i use my Korean vitamin C mask with a spritz of my Laneige toner after moisturising then I “glow”

The glow look can be achieved by using Korean products, personally, I can’t achieve the same look using my Clinique or Liz Earle let’s just put it that way, lol

Dreamingofthedays · 13/10/2025 20:57

It’s derma planning… I had a gift voucher for a facial and the first time I’d had it done after she said can I try it on you, I’m easy going so said yes and came away all shiny…. Basically shaving every tiny hair off your face!!! Not sure I’d be up for having it done again 🤣

Missingpop · 13/10/2025 21:07

TeaRoseTallulah · 12/10/2025 11:27

Vaseline face as it's known in this house 😂

That is exactly what it is; it’s a mixture of Vaseline; baby oil and aloe vera gel mixed together & applied to the face to give it a super boosted hydration appearance apparently; personally I think it looks awful & very greasy.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 13/10/2025 21:45

Depends where you go - good places will do it for you £150 upwards for one area (ball park as it can really vary) but beauticians now do it who aren’t trained in the nerves of the face and it’s a lot cheaper e.g £99 for one area. Plus, teens live at home and probably have a little job on the side eg uni students who work in the summer etc.

if anyone is considering botox only go to people who are medically trained! My botox has been done by a bowel surgeon at St Thomas’ (!), an anaesthetist and a dentist. All brilliant results.
