Explain the shiny, 'raw' looking faces everywhere nowadays... how is it achieved?

Hi all, I am old enough to no longer know what the beautiful young things are doing to their skin.... This shiny, skin scrubbed raw look is a mystery to me. I love the older dewy, fresh natural look, but this is another level and it looks a bit much in my humble opinion. However, I'd love to know what they're doing to achieve this look? As someone who focuses on using simple products with very gentle, natural ingredients, I expect I won't want to partake, but I'm willing to be converted!

Can I just give some appreciation to fact this skincare thread now has a side discussion about freshly wanked cocks.

Love MN for this.

Even better, and in true MN style, a lively bickering about them 😂

I think it's one of the many things that looks good on Instagram but ridiculous in real life.

THIS lolol. I know the exact look you are talking about- its called glass skin. Looks fab on arty, filtered instagram posts and utterly ridiculous in real life.

Someone I know does this look in real life and a the rest of us cant stop staring at her - it looks like her face is covered in either vaseline or cooking oil. It really doesnt look good at all- just makes her looks hella greasy. I dont get the appeal.

Hear hear.

The casual, cruel judgement on menopausal women is particularly unpleasant. Another bored misogynistic man, perhaps.

Ah, the classic. Someone doesn't like something a woman does, therefore that person must be a man.

I'm not a man (I'll show you my tits if you like?) - I'm a post-menopausal woman, and I still think Trinny looks bloody ridiculous with her cheese grater face.

No, never. Would you actually want to see that?

YES.

You’ve never touched his penis? Ever???

Don’t you see it after sex?

I haven't even seen your post. No idea why you're addressing your comment to me.

Incidentally, and on a general note, MN has been plagued with men posting misogynistic comments on threads over the last period of time. Many posters are now understandably alert to comments that might reasonably come from those individuals.

Because the "I disagree with a point, therefore anyone making it must be a man" response is just bloody ridiculous, and you made that point, so I'm addressing my comment to you.

Frequentlyincorrectbut · 13/10/2025 13:38

I have seen people with chemical peels who have a shiny smooth face, it's a bit different than glass skin but equally disconcerting, the last person I saw like that I kept staring at it to check it, then thinking I shouldn't be doing that. Glass skin is a Korean beauty trend, but sometimes the Chinese girls laugh at the Japanese celebs on TicTok if they are too greasy and shiny, it is not admired in all areas at all (my girls into beauty culture watch these).

Glass skin is about both skin prep and skin products, I find it weird, but I also find lots of make-up things weird, like the trend for Japanese women to use very light foundation so it looks almost white, British women to dye their bodies and faces orange ( contouring is still not out of fashion amongst my students), and duck lips with fillers, but beyond those things most of looks reasonably nice.

I once had a highlighter that made my face look greasy. There was a trend to have this highlighter effect to 'make you look younger' but of course it did not really look younger, you just looked like a wrinklier greasy older person!

I mean, how do you not?
Do you shield your eyes when he pulls out?! Turn and face the wall?! Hide behind the duvet?!
How have you never seen your husband's penis after you've had sex with him?!

Only to help him get it in, but I try to avoid that. After sex he usually puts his boxers on/goes to have a shower and I just look away. I find penis' pretty unpleasant in appearance and intimidating too to be honest.

Oh I've seen glances of it, but I look away and he usually wants to get washed afterwards.

God. That's awful. Imagine if your husband was so horrified by your body that he deliberately looked away from it right after you'd had sex.
You must be on a wind up. Nobody is that ridiculous.

Well, that's a bit daft then, isn't it?

The comment related specifically to misogyny, not to merely having a different opinion.

You're getting het up about something that literally didn't happen.

Not at all. I am a woman of 42, so not a million miles away from menopause myself. I still believe this trend looks stupid, on everyone, but on a menopausal woman it would look like hot flushes.

It's not misogyny to say that something looks ridiculous just because that thing happens to be on a woman. Princess Beatrice's Wills and Kate wedding hat, or Lady Gaga's meat dress, for example. "Those things are ridiculous" is an opinion.
Plenty of people have posted to say they think Trinny's make up looks like she's cheese gratered her face. That doesn't automatically make any of us a misogynistic man. Just that we think she looks ridiculous. Also an opinion. Or do you think negative opnions about something a woman does are automatically misogyny?

Once again, I haven't even seen whatever you wrote about Trinny. I was specifically referring to a different comment by a different poster.

Can you start a squabble with someone else now?

He usually puts his boxers on after he's finished. I think everyone's genitals are gross. He wouldn't really see mine either.

I'm not suprised he does that if you've made your disgust that obvious to him. I'd probably rush to cover up my body if I thought my partner was disgusted by it too.
How horribly sad. What an awful way to treat the person you allegedly love at such a vulnerable time.

Nope. Not if you're going to trot out the "these people must be men!" bullshit in response to perfectly valid opinions, just because they're negative opinions about women. Honestly, haven't you got a better argument than that?

A negative opnion about something a woman does is not automatically misogyny.

Eg:
"Margaret Thatcher screwed over the mining industry"
"You hold a negative opinion about something a woman did? You must be a misogynist man".

See?

Vaseline face as it's known in this house 😂

omg this comment took me back 40 years to a school pal whose mother was a very sweet very strange alcoholic lady.

She'd slather vaseline all over her face and walk around reflecting all the light in the room. She'd also prepare us these weird 1970's style snacks and bring them in on a tray like we were her treasured guests. At 14 this was beyond odd. My friend spoke of moving to live with her father one day soon and she did finally get to go live with him.

The glass skin look today is exactly how she looked LOL. I will say she didn't have ANY wrinkles and she drank and smoked like a champ so maybe the vaseline worked idk

3luckystars · 13/10/2025 15:28

I think putting the Vaseline over the camera lens would be a better idea for getting rid of the wrinkles.

No. I referred to a single, specific misogynistic comment by another poster.

That is completely seperate from whatever point you think you're making. You've insisted on repeatedly trying to argue about something else entirely.

Please stop ascribing views to me that are not mine. I haven't even READ your posts about women's faces, never mind commented on them. I usually avoid posters like you as I have zero interest in ridiculous squabbling.

We have different views. That's it. Vive la différence.

Appearances, to an extent. Opinions like yours below? Not one bit. I have no time for people like you who seek to tear women down based on their appearance in this way.

It looks awful even on the young and beautiful models who promote it. On a menopause age woman it would look utterly ludicrous

I always find it rather unfortunate when people cannot express their opinion without resorting to insulting other people. You seem to be incapable of a normal exchange without being rude. It always indicates a lack of intelligence, emotionally and otherwise.

Anyway, you have your opinion, I have mine. They are polar opposites. We shall not persuade the other, so let's go about our days.

@AliceMaforethought is entitled to her opinion and she wasn’t rude. It was you who attacked her directly. If you are uber sensitive to views different to your own you shouldn’t be on mumsnet. I’m a menopausal woman and I wasn’t in the least offended.
