Winter day dresses - suggestions and styling

What are you buying? Particularly interested in something suitable for large boobs - so needs some shape and a flattering neckline.

Then how do you style it? Belt to break it up? Scarf or long necklace? I'm keen on chunkier boots, knee length or DM type. I feel a dress makes footwear a significant feature so maybe more interesting is better?

I am a fan of needlecord and denim dresses at this time of year, but I haven’t found any I want to buy this year yet.

Ghost have done some needle cord this year and there are a couple of Seasalt ones which would be nice on tall, slender people. I love, love needlecord in theory, but being a chunky 14 I find the p look on the model sadly bears no resemblance to how it ends up on me!

Expectinginapril · 26/09/2025 06:25

@TheChosenTwo @NormaSars please can anyone tell me if the buttons
are real and undo or are sown together on the nobody’s child dress?

This! I can’t wait for midi dresses to go away! I’m not really tall (5’6) and they just look so frumpy on me.

I'm dreading them disappearing completely because, much as I love shorter styles, I have rugby-player’s knees and need something to cover them.

Hi, I know you didn't ask me 😁 but I've got that dress and the buttons are real and can be undone. It's a lovely dress.

TheChosenTwo · 26/09/2025 08:59

Yes @Expectinginapril - real buttons, I wore it the other day and I left the top few and bottom 2 undone. It’s a gorgeous dress!

I love this dress so much that I've ordered it in 2 more prints:
https://www.whitestuff.com/p/5994/rua-jersey-collared-shirt-dress/GREY_MLT
Soft jersey, not gaping despite the button front.

ooh i was looking at that yesterday! Might have to go and try it on as I find their stuff a bit hit n miss for sizing. I'm all for finding something that fits and buying it in another colour :)

PostPopper · 26/09/2025 15:33

Also bought the burgundy cord Nobody’s Child dress and absolutely love it! Thanks to the original poster.

Ive only tried it on and not worn out but I’d say it’s true to size including bust area although I did have the top few buttons undone.

Fillybuster · 26/09/2025 23:46

Thanks for the Boden suggestions- I usually find their styling a bit twee but I really like the paisley dress a pp shared up thread and it was a total bargain. Now praying I don’t get one of those “ out of stock” emails tomorrow! Also love the Nobody’s Child dress, but I’m clearly not alone: it’s pretty much sold out in every size!

I got a lovely Mandy Moore (think that's the name) printed, midi dress with long sleeves from a local vintage shop for about £40.00. It's more of a transitional autumn/winter dress but nice material.

It'll go well with Chelsea boots (black) and my Asos fake brown suede knee high cowboy boots.

I'd love to say I love cordoroy dresses but the one I ever got from Tu, I barely wore it, even though it was perfectly wearable.

Most other winter day dresses I layer with as pp say black t-shirt or long sleeved top and thick opaques. I also have knitted dresses which I can put cardigans on with or Uniqlo heat tech tops.

Bibbitybobbity70 · 27/09/2025 22:19

Tried on a gorgeous navy needle cord dress in seasalt earlier this week, sadly wrong length for me 5'2" (& need to drop a few lbs, trying on with short socks didn't help lol) but even so fitted top pretty
well & for those slightly taller would be lovely day dress.

Thank you - I should have thought of that for myself! I was too slow off the mark for the burgundy so have bought it in green. Two dresses from one thread….maybe it’s time for me to stop reading?!

I have this and I’ve had lots of compliments. I don’t wear it with the top underneath. I also have big boobs. I wear it with tights and DM patent Chelsea boots. I dithered because of the cost but I’m so happy with it.

How much????!!!😮surely there is an equivalent at Next etc at less than half that price.

VenusClapTrap · 29/09/2025 14:59

I’m a fan of jumper dresses because they’re so easy to wear. I just bought this one, and I love it. It’s a bit different. I’ll wear it with clog boots.

I love a knitted dress but I really hate how they sag at the back/ bottom area after a few hours wear. Most knitted dresses loose their shape and structure. The only knitted dress I have that’s never done that is an Alexander McQueen dress that’s pure drama and sex appeal so you wouldn’t wear it on a regular work day!

I agree that knitted dresses sag and lose their shape pretty quickly @BrillantBriony

Having loose fitting knitted dresses seems to avoid this issue for me.
I look OK in a loose tube it seems. I do have one with some cashmere in which looks a bit smarter and keeps its shape.

I rarely wear dresses but have been inspired by this thread and have ordered a couple, both are corduroy which isn’t a fabric I’m familiar with. Does anyone know how it behaves, ie is it something that’s likely to shrink when washed?

The dresses I’ve ordered are a bargain from Part Two https://www.johnlewis.com/part-two-ramita-corduroy-dress/black/p112309688?size=12 and then this one https://www.johnlewis.com/kaffe-eve-corduroy-dress/p110750730.
I’m planning on wearing with black tights and black ankle boots but not entirely sure if that will be too drab.

Love that Paisley dress...she wears it so well.

NormaSars · 30/09/2025 09:22

@ThatGlimmeringSea , Corduroy could shrink, but that dress in a mixed fibre so might not. Follow the washing instructions on the garment (30', do not tumble dry).
Not keen on it sorry but it is not dissimilar to things I wear. The green one when it's not worn by the model looks nice.
On a positive note, cord is warm and a dress with ankle boots and tights is easy to wear. I think you'd get to wear it a lot.
