Winter day dresses - suggestions and styling

What are you buying? Particularly interested in something suitable for large boobs - so needs some shape and a flattering neckline.

Then how do you style it? Belt to break it up? Scarf or long necklace? I'm keen on chunkier boots, knee length or DM type. I feel a dress makes footwear a significant feature so maybe more interesting is better?

I got a similar dress to the one above in H&M, agree a shirt or pinafore style is really versatile. I really value comfort these days so as long as I can find some comfy tights I can see myself in a lot of dresses this winter.

Aboutmeabouttime · 22/09/2025 08:33

@ILoveLukeAlderton
Snag tights, all day, everyday.

NormaSars · 22/09/2025 09:48

@onestepinfrontoftheother , with short dresses I wear black opaque or thick tights, with black ankle boots.
I often wear pinafores over a black top, or bright short skirts or divided skirts with a black top/jumper.

Ankle boots are either smart ones or DM-style ones.

This! I can’t wait for midi dresses to go away! I’m not really tall (5’6) and they just look so frumpy on me.

I have found my people! I can't stand midi dresses. They just don't suit my body type at all. I'm 5'8" so neither short nor tall, but can't figure out why they look good on many people, but not me!

NormaSars · 22/09/2025 13:09

@BumpyWinds , at 5'8" you're tallish but not tall - average height for a woman in the UK is just under 5'4".

Is it body shape? I look frumpy in them, and I think it's because I'm fairly broad shouldered and about average height.
A friend is about 5' if that, and she looks great in midi dresses, so it's not height.

It's the length that looks weird on me. I have two dresses from Seasalt - one knee length and one midi, but otherwise they're exactly the same cut. I love wearing the knee length one but the midi just doesn't look right.

I've come to the conclusion that I must just have weird shaped legs! 😂

TheChosenTwo · 22/09/2025 13:30

I’ve just taken delivery of the burgundy cord Nobody’s Child one posted above, it’s absolutely perfect! I also took the liberty of ordering the tartan dropped hem one which is also lovely 😂 will both look nice with tights and boots and I can wear a black thermal long sleeved top under both too, absolute winner.

MorganaKate · 22/09/2025 17:19

I love this dress so much that I've ordered it in 2 more prints:
https://www.whitestuff.com/p/5994/rua-jersey-collared-shirt-dress/GREY_MLT
Soft jersey, not gaping despite the button front.

NormaSars · 22/09/2025 17:38

@MorganaKate ,it's a nice style. Looks good.
@TheChosenTwo , I really like that one.

try unfolded. Most of the dresses look flattering and are sustainably produced. I have a couple and love the quality, but they are made to order and my second one took five weeks to arrive! https://thisisunfolded.com/

I'm a huge fan of This is Unfolded and have a number of their dresses, however I have never received an order in less than eight weeks!

longtompot · 22/09/2025 23:09

@Makingmusicinmy50s I love that dress! I have a similar one from Boden bought in their sale last year, and I love it so much as it's very comfy, has pockets. I wish I managed to get it in the green, but I'll keep looking on Vinted/ebay etc

dayslikethese1 · 23/09/2025 03:40

I'm so excited to get all my A/W dresses and tights out again. I wear mine with biker boots. Have a couple shorter jackets that look nice for round about now, when it's not properly cold yet.

sofaRunner · 23/09/2025 11:12

MyElatedUmberFinch · 21/09/2025 22:24

You need petite not short. I am five feet and nearly one inch and have about 30 midis that fit.

wow!! please let me know where you shop...... I am about the same height & really struggle to find dresses that don't swamp me. I know I am super picky about patterns but the length & volume are often the first thing that puts me off so would love to hear recommendations

I have had one dress from Unfolded and it took two months to arrive which has put me off ever buying from them again. Lovely dress, beautifully made and I like the principles of the company. However I missed out on two months of wear for my dress this summer due to the length of time it took to get to me.

Oh my @keeperofdarktails that suggestion of unfolded is amazing. I have never heard of the company. They sound very ethical and nice dresses too.
On the website it states that 30% of clothes made this year won’t get sold. That is shocking. I hadn’t realised. Blush

I've got lots of their dresses, some trousers, and tshirts etc. They are all great quality, lovely fabric etc. You do have to get used to a long lead time between decision & delivery which many potential customers won't like, but its a great business.

I like shorter dresses too, at 5'3", but struggle to know what tights/shoes/trainers/boots? I feel like natural coloured tights look old fashioned, and black opaque can look a bit teenager or make the outfit very dark too and not great unless the dress is black base. What do you all do with shorter dresses? Thanks

Have a look for patterned tights or thinner black ones. Have you looked at Snag tights? They currently have an ad showing black and brown tights, and the brown ones look great. Not so harsh as black. I'll be ordering some to try.

I pop into Matalan every now and again, and don't often find things I like but I found this dress last week. I'm planning to wear it to work on Monday with a pair of chunky biker boots. It's flattering and a lovely fabric.

Matalan dress

I have got this dress and I love it. It’s not really a winter dress as it’s thin material but that works well for me. It’s really flattering.

AndeanFlamingo · 24/09/2025 19:16

That Baukjen dress would look terrible on me. I have big boobs and a small waist but that would just hang off my boobs making me look enormous. I don't have any links but you need something that is either fitted all over or fitted at the waist to give you a good shape. I find I can get away with a roll neck if a dress is very fitted but crew neck doesn't work well even when figure hugging. It just screams 'here are my breasts' and I already don't need any help in that department.

How true to size would you say the fit is @keeperofdarktails? I'm a 14 but the other day in John Lewis a size 8 dress I tried on fit. I haven't been a size 8 since I was 8!

I have this dress in both the dark pink and d a lovely red tartan they did last year. I’m a E cup. It looks lovely on and I get so many compliments. Style it with my cherry red DMs or high top converse.

Thank you for this recommendation. I’ve just ordered it

Shirt dress in needlecord or lightweight denim. I have one from Tu from a few years ago.
I'd look pregnant in the Baukjen one because it would hang off my bosom.

The one I have is not this one: Buy Indigo Denim Midaxi Dress 10 | Dresses | Tu
The style looks more like Pure Cotton Cord Belted Midi Shirt Dress | Nobody's Child | M&S or Red Button Up Belted Midi Shirt Dress | New Look but in a dark thin denim

Edited

I have just bought the Nobody's Child shirt dress in burgandy. It is lovely and the tie gives you a nice shape, but I find NC very tight on the bust (and I am not particularly blessed in that area).

NormaSars · 25/09/2025 11:21

I love burgundy and like the NC dress, but I have a bust. How ungenerous is it? Would one size up be a good idea?

I can believe that actually - I nipped into Next at the weekend to look for some trousers for DD and the amount of summer dresses in the sale was crazy! I wouldn't have thought many people would be snapping them up now the weather has changed and they were mostly of a style that willno doubt look out of date next year - also racks of those trousers that look like pyjama bottoms.
