Winter day dresses - suggestions and styling

What are you buying? Particularly interested in something suitable for large boobs - so needs some shape and a flattering neckline.

Then how do you style it? Belt to break it up? Scarf or long necklace? I'm keen on chunkier boots, knee length or DM type. I feel a dress makes footwear a significant feature so maybe more interesting is better?

That one is great. I have some pinafores, and they're great. Black t-shirt, thick opaques, pull-on dress over them and I look presentable.

Thank you that’s good to know- I’ve never owned one before. Although do have a pair of dungarees that I also love!

In the really cold months (colder than now) I live in knitted dresses for work. Uniqlo does some good ones, but I’ve also got several I love from Roman, of all places. I always get compliments when I wear them. For example:

Do they not bobble like crazy with them being acrylic?

I just saw that Joanie is doing a whole collection with Christina Hendricks.

Just had a look and all puffed shoulder sleeves - whhhyyy? 😩 It’s the last thing you want if you’ve got big boobs.

NormaSars · 20/09/2025 17:38

@Gymbunny2025 , The only downside is when you sit down they look quite short. I have ones in different colours. The one you linked would be good for any season. Sundress, over a jumper and tights, over a t-shirt...

NormaSars · 20/09/2025 17:43

@Screamingabdabz , I was ready to agree with you, but the dresses work and she looks fabulous in them.

No, that hasn’t been a problem. In fact they’re dead easy to care for being acrylic - just chuck them in the washing machine. TBH I’ve got wool dresses that have bobbled far worse, with a Seasalt one that’s 100% wool being the worst offender.

I absolutely love a belted shirt-dress, as I have a smaller waist compared to hips.

https://patra.com/product/cpsd/womens-pure-cotton-printed-shirt-dress

I've found Patra doing some really good value dresses - some of the prints are horrible, but if you can spend 20 mins or so on the website, there are some gems that I'd say are well made and easy to care for.

The styling depends on the occasion. Everyday, I do like some lace up boots walking in leather with a small heel.

TheChosenTwo · 20/09/2025 23:08

I’ve just ordered the midi nobody’s child one; thanks for sharing the link.
its exactly what I like in a dress, long and warm looking! I’m constantly
chilly but could wear tights and a thermal top underneath that.

bendmeoverbackwards · 21/09/2025 01:20

If you look at Love and Roses, or Friends like These brands at Next, they tend to have dresses with a bit of shape which I find more flattering than baggy jumper dresses.

onestepinfrontoftheother · 21/09/2025 08:48

I like shorter dresses too, at 5'3", but struggle to know what tights/shoes/trainers/boots? I feel like natural coloured tights look old fashioned, and black opaque can look a bit teenager or make the outfit very dark too and not great unless the dress is black base. What do you all do with shorter dresses? Thanks

Last winter the trend was for very sheer black tights, not opaque, or coloured tights in about a 10 denier in colours such as brown, sounds awful but looks really good such as here. I also saw a lot of ribbed/herringbone tights last year. Dd and her friends (16) wore variations of fishnets. Calzedonia is a good place to look for tights and they often have offers on. If it's not too cold I think (tanned) legs, short dress and boots looks great in winter

I usually get my winter dresses from Distubia and wear boots from Lanx with them. I have I think 5 pairs of Lanx so can mix the look up a bit!

Thanks for reminding me about Disturbia, I haven't looked there for a while and really like their clothes. There's 25% off at the moment so have bought a few things for winter

Thank you, those tights look nice, but yes, it is a tricky balance to not look like a teenager too!

I just wear black opaques and various different boots.

I can’t bear the feel of thin sheer tights, I prefer cotton rich tights. Maybe I’ll experiment with different colours this year.

I got this on sale after specifically having a hankering for something paisley print.

Laura Jersey Midi Shirt Dress-Navy, Paisley Paradise | Boden UK https://share.google/H12pwohp3o3UzcWox

I don't always like Boden, can find it a bit twee, but I love this. It's a really flattering fit for bigger boobs and looks great with knee boots. I ended up buying this at full price as well, because it's the same shape and it also looks great. It's cord, which I love for autumn, and the pattern makes it more interesting, I think.

Clara Cord Midi Dress-Red Liquorice, Ornate Flora | Boden UK https://share.google/u4Ts4FDDlx4fMhT3s

Really impressed with Boden this season and there's 15% off at the moment.

Laura Jersey Midi Shirt Dress-Navy, Paisley Paradise

Take the best bits of a shirt and a bias-cut skirt, and you get something a little like the Laura dress. Modal and cotton form its swishy canvas, which falls to a calf-grazing hem and is signed off with a waist-defining belt

I have a couple of multi packs of tights from
M&S in different shades of grey, charcoal, stone, dark beige, wine, navy plus black.

This! I can’t wait for midi dresses to go away! I’m not really tall (5’6) and they just look so frumpy on me.

I hear you - at 5ft 0 there is no such thing as “midi” even if you do find a short length option. Never found one that doesn’t completely swamp me.

You need petite not short. I am five feet and nearly one inch and have about 30 midis that fit.

babyboy520 · 22/09/2025 02:12

I love throwing on a wool coat when the weather turns a bit chilly. It’s light but still really warm, and it just seems to go with everything. Works just as well with jeans as it does with a skirt.

QuizzlyBears · 22/09/2025 06:43

I also love a belted shirt dress. Have bought a couple recently from Dancing Leopard via Vinted which I’ll wear with patent DMs and black tights.

Aboutmeabouttime · 22/09/2025 08:05

I’ve just bought this - can dress it up for work but also long sleeve t-shirt, tights and boots or a cropped jumper over the took. Really versatile
