Dr Martens in your 50s anyone?

I have a few pairs of converse boots which I love. I have seen women at work wearing DMs- they are a bit younger than me but they look great on.
I am tempted to get some but concerned I would just look daft and that they will shred my feet into bits.
if you have a pair can you tell me what style they are? I quite like the look of the platform ones tbh😬

I don’t have any but I also don’t see why you shouldn’t wear them if that’s what you fancy. I’m in my 60s and wear what I want and not what others deem acceptable.

Doingmybest12 · 18/09/2025 07:03

Dr Martin boots are for anyone , I think they can take a while to break in. The platform ones are more of a style statement so depends on your overall look, nothing to do with your age though.

WoahThreeAces · 18/09/2025 07:07

I have several pairs of DM boots (I'm almost 50) and tbh I associate them with older people anyway? The youth that wore them in the 90s are still wearing them, marching into their 50s and beyond 😂
That aside, I don't think age should make any difference, wear what you want to wear!

FishPie2 · 18/09/2025 07:08

I have 2 pairs of Chelsea boots, 1 pairs of sandals and 1 pair of usual zip and laces. I am a lot older than you and still have my feet intact.

FancyShmancy · 18/09/2025 07:08

I’m 52 and have a pair of black patent leather Chelsea shoes.
I bloody love them! They go with everything. I wear mine with jeans and dresses of several styles. I always feel brilliant when wearing them and have been complemented a few times too.

Absolutely buy a pair that you like and build outfits around them. You won’t regret it!

PestoHoliday · 18/09/2025 07:10

DMs don't have an age limit.

MsJinks · 18/09/2025 07:11

I’m really not a particularly stylish person and don’t venture on here except for tips occasionally.
But I can confirm that I have Doc Marts - Airwave black - by chance as my daughter gave them me. I was worried they’d hurt my fat feet - but they are SO comfortable- I’ve worn them for full days on the bounce at a time, they’re waterproof too. I would buy again if they ever wore out but I think they’re not supposed to really and look as good as 3 years ago now - being originally 2nd hand before my daughter got them but looking new.
Style, having said the above! Sometimes just under jeans so as regular boots really. Sometimes with longish dresses when going out and I’ve been told I look nice! I’ve worn them with just above knee length shorts at festivals and not sure that looks as well as with dresses on me personally, but it saves my feet.
Maybe I’m too old for some of the fashion type wearing with them, but I think they work how I use them, they do for me anyway.
I’m strongly recommending- I’ve only the one pair, though I really like the sandals and see other coloured boots I like, but umm price (and a bit of strict small wardrobe) keeps me happy with just the one.
Go for it!

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 18/09/2025 07:12

Docs are for everyone! I’m nearly 50 and have erm…. Far too many pairs sandals, shoes, boots, platforms. If you’re anywhere near York check out the doc outlet!

cheesycheesy · 18/09/2025 07:13

I love the look of them on others. Are you expected to only wear certain shoes when you get past a certain age? I find them too sick hard and clompy on my feet though

Sunshineandrainbow · 18/09/2025 07:18

I have a pair of Mary Jane I bought last year and they are still in the box.

I think its the socks issue I am struggling with. People wear such cool socks with them and I just don't think I can pull that off with black trousers.

I should have bought the boots and then it wouldn't have mattered.

ZenNudist · 18/09/2025 07:20

Lots of my friends in their 50s wear them

CracklingFlames · 18/09/2025 07:22

I'm mid forties' and bought some. If you buy the soft leather they don't take any breaking in.

BigButtons · 18/09/2025 07:26

Thank you so much everyone! I am seriously considering it. I have a birthday coming up at the end of this month. There are so many styles though! I would rather have a pair with laces and a zip at the side. I see they also do ones in softer leather.
i had a pair of second hand ones years ago and they were so uncomfortable to wear that I sold them on.
I think it’s probably worth trying shoes on in the actual shop rather than getting them online?

Whenever the question is "Can I wear X in my 40s/50s/60s/70s?" the answer is always "Yes!!".

Wear what you like. Worrying about whether what you're wearing is age appropriate makes you seem old, not the garment itself.

Gettingbysomehow · 18/09/2025 07:30

Im of the age where DMs were for skin heads so I wouldnt wear them. There are so many great chunky boot alternatives.

Everexpanding · 18/09/2025 07:39

Had them when young OP, to break them in we used to put a few inches of water in the bath and walk up and down the bath with them on, then wear them for a bit !? Never got blisters but maybe not good for leather as got through a few pairs …also always wear what you want and makes you happy

Floisme · 18/09/2025 07:49

Of course the answer is ‘yes’. My own question is, why do so many women feel compelled to ask? I don’t even see huge numbers of young women wearing them these days.

I prefer Solovair to Dr Martens who I think have started to believe their own publicity. Solovair do the same styles but still make them in the UK (or at least they did the last time I checked). I’ve got their Gibson shoes and Monkey Boots. Yes you may need to break them in.

Yes you may need to break them in.

BigButtons · 18/09/2025 07:50

@Floisme why do you prefer Solvair? Are they better made?

OP posts:
ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 18/09/2025 07:51

Try Solovair or Lanx.

Great boots and fabulously comfortable, Lanx run small though.

Made in the UK. Not where DM are made now.

Oh snap!

Didn't see your reply.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 18/09/2025 07:52

I was just coming on here to say of course buy them but also suggest Solovair as an alternative but @Floisme has beaten me to it!
Anyway I prefer Solovair as the leather as just incredible and they are beautifully made.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 18/09/2025 07:54

I actually Lanx are more comfortable than Solovair.

Was just about to post this. I love docs but held off buying any new ones as they are such a pain to break in. The soft leather ones are great.

secureyourbook · 18/09/2025 08:15

I bought some DM fur lined boots last winter and I’m delighted with them.

Onefortheroad25 · 18/09/2025 08:29

I’m 46 and have a classic black pair. I love them (I loved dm’s in my teens too) but these I can’t seem to break in. They kill the backs of my feet. Any tips?
