I have a few pairs of converse boots which I love. I have seen women at work wearing DMs- they are a bit younger than me but they look great on.
I am tempted to get some but concerned I would just look daft and that they will shred my feet into bits.
if you have a pair can you tell me what style they are? I quite like the look of the platform ones tbh😬

@Tupperwarefan , I don't wear long dresses, but wear dresses with tights.
The tights are opaque but quite thin, so I wear trainer socks too.If the tights are not thin, then just tights.

Tupperwarefan · 19/09/2025 12:04

@UpMyself@PestoHoliday@Plastictreees thank you!

Specific question for the doc wearers - when you wear them with a long dress, do you wear them with tights or long socks? I have my cherry reds from the 90’s and wondered about wearing them with my long dresses…but…socks or tights??

Socks and 3/4 length cotton under trousers with a long dress.

@BigButtons , try Jump the Gun in Gardner Street, or Cordelia James in Lewes

Thanks! I am in Lewes 🙂

I used to work at Lewes hospital and the prison. It's a nice town. Im in Somerset now.

UpMyself · 19/09/2025 13:27

You're welcome @BigButtons , there was a stockists finder on the site.

I'm mid forties and have DM 1460s, Chelsea boots, Mary Jane's and sandals. Love them, they don't shred my feet but 1460s don't give my high instep enough space so require a bit of leather stretch to get them comfy. The others have been super comfortable, I try to wear any new footwear gradually the first few times though.

I had to cut one side of the tongue to get my right foot in with its higher instep. That stitching across the tongue is a terrible feature, there’s not a lot of room in them.

I’m surprised to see so many recommending Solovair, I really don’t like them. Don’t like Monkey boots, Chelsea Boots or Fisherman sandals either.

Seriously considering getting some Sturlini boots this Winter. This is just me, obviously but starting to feel tired of Docs (I think because they have become a very middle aged thing - we’ve been wearing them since the 80’s) and I fancy something different and more ‘grown up’. No young people wear them in my area, they all wear converse or retro running shoes.

Trouble is all my money goes on dresses, not shoes, and my DMs refuse to wear out so I probably won’t do it.

UpMyself · 19/09/2025 14:03

@ChelseaDetective , the thread is about DMs, and the Solovairs are what DMs used to be sometime in the last half of the 20th century.
I love my monkey boots but not everyone will.

I don't think Sturlini footwear belong in a DM thread. Neither do Grenson, which I have. It's a different sort of boot.

Youngsters and not-that-young women seem to wear colourful Adidas Gazelles/Sambas where I am. It's like a uniform. Quite a few AF1s too.

Plastictreees · 19/09/2025 15:21

Adidas sambas are the devils work, total agony despite breaking them in. Something to do with where they sit at the back of the ankle. I impulse bought a limited edition design, big mistake.

Docs on the other hand are so comfy and weren’t difficult to break in at all.

UpMyself · 19/09/2025 15:24

@Plastictreees , I wouldn't wear Adidas or Converse. I can see why they appeal but my feet don't like them.

It’s my first and last time!

KawasakiBabe · 19/09/2025 15:27

I’m 58, I have 2 pair of boots and 1 pair of shoes. I love my dms. I don’t think you ca. get away with fancy ones, just keep it simple.

UpMyself · 19/09/2025 15:41

Just in case anyone thought I was being dismissive of Sturlini boots, I give you this link.
Women's Boots | Victoria and Chelsea Boots | TOAST
They definitely get my approval.

@Plastictreees , About 10 years ago Stan Smiths were everywhere. They weren't for me. I think I wore Converse hi-tops once and once only.
@KawasakiBabe , I think anyone can wear colourful ones. I have some footwear in bright colours, but I think I might look a bit like a clown in bright yellow or red DMs.
Some of the black floral ones look good with dresses.

Owly11 · 19/09/2025 15:44

I have the monkey boots and love them. They are so comfy. If you are worried about comfort look for the styles in soft leather and avoid some of the classic smooth leather ones that can take a lot of hard work to break in. They tell you in the description on line which leather it is and they even have a tab putting all the soft leather ones together. You can also tell from the reviews.

Funny both stan smiths and converse fit me like a glove. I think it depends on your foot shape

Thanks for all the info @UpMyself btw. It was interesting at work today - school staff room. I was telling a dm wearing colleague about Solovair. She had not heard of them, but her young adult son, Who was sitting next to her, immediately knew and said they are what DMs were once supposed to be. I was impressed that he knew that

This thread has cost me money as I decided I needed a pair of Chelsea boots 😂 didn’t splash on DMs this time though

They fit but they don't have enough arch support for me.

MollyMini · 19/09/2025 17:06

I have 3 pairs of DM boots, all standard soles. They are all different ages. First pair are ancient and now really soft leather. Like slippers and incredibly scruffy! Second pair are patterned fabric style I keep for best.
3rd pair are just plain black leather. I’ve had them for a couple of years now and they are almost about worn in ;-)

I’m 53 and I absolutely do not care what anyone else thinks about my DMs - I blooming love em ;-) xx

Aparecium · 19/09/2025 18:36

I have awkward feet, and this shoe stretching device has been brilliant for adapting shoes to accommodate my asymmetrical feet. I agree with ChelseaDetective that the stitching across the tongue on DMs is a terrible feature which has no give. When I wasn't wearing the boots, they had the shoe stretcher in them, and it gradually eased the stitching over the instep. If I was buying it again, I would get one with a ratchet to raise the instep, as well as the facility to modify the toebox. It hadn't occurred to me when I bought the stretcher, as I have the opposite problem to a high instep!

DrNo007 · 19/09/2025 18:40

I'm 66 and have classic black DMs. They were super comfortable from the start, even on my problematic feet (wide and full of corns).

KawasakiBabe · 19/09/2025 19:03

@UpMyself oh I absolutely think some people can carry off the colourful ones, but not all. So, I guess what I was saying is, if she’s unsure then stick to plain. I have boots in black and cherry red and my shoes are a beautiful pale grey. I’m always complimented on them.

ChelseaDetective · 19/09/2025 19:19

@UpMyself

Its just a chat forum. The nature of chat is that tangents may occur.

I’ll add whatever I think is relevant the thread. Its not up to you to police what this thread is or isn’t about but thanks for the telling off 😆

I’m not the only one expanding on the theme of Docs, other brands of footwear are available for women in their fifties and OP might like to hear about them.

Someone else bought a pair of Chelsea boots as a result of this thread.

Get a grip.

UpMyself · 19/09/2025 19:25

I think you'd need to be 100 % about ones that aren't a fairly plain colour, @KawasakiBabe . Navy ones can look good.

@ChelseaDetective , I posted a link to some very nice Sturlini boots, should anyone be curious. There is no need to be unpleasant. I wasn't telling you off at all.

SauvignonBlanche · 19/09/2025 19:44

I’m a 56 year old nurse and have been wearing DM shoes with my uniform for over 30 years.

Am tempted by the Chelsea boots but will have a look at Solovair first, I’ve got wide feet though.
