I have a few pairs of converse boots which I love. I have seen women at work wearing DMs- they are a bit younger than me but they look great on.
I am tempted to get some but concerned I would just look daft and that they will shred my feet into bits.
if you have a pair can you tell me what style they are? I quite like the look of the platform ones tbh😬

I’m 60+ and I have 3 pairs of DMs that I wear all of the time. I’d have more if I could afford them . The most comfortable boots I own .

neilyoungismyhero · 18/09/2025 10:28

I'm in my 70s and wear them all the time

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 18/09/2025 10:35

I’m 54 and have two pairs of boots with laces but a zip up the side. I bought them from the kids range as I’m a size 5. I have two pairs of the sandals. But my absolute favourite are the Chelsea boots my husband bought me last year. I have compliments on them all the time. Gorgeous.

northshore · 18/09/2025 10:42

I’m 64 and wear the Bex Smooth Leather DMs - no wearing in was needed. All ages wear DMs!

Gettingbysomehow · 18/09/2025 10:47

I never wear anything I have to "break in". My feet are too painful with arthritis, everyone in my family got it young. Shoes either fit straight away or they don't. I think having to break shoes in destroys your feet. If they are the right length and width they should just fit.

FairyBatman · 18/09/2025 10:53

I’m not quite 50 yet, but wear DMs loads, classic boots, Chelsea boots, coloured ones and Mary Jane’s. I love them and hope I’ll still be wearing them in my 80’s!

IamEarthymama · 18/09/2025 13:06

I’m smiling at the idea that there is any age where you can’t wear DMs!😉☺️

I am 70 years old and I have been wearing DMs for nearly 40 years, through all the changes in style I have enjoyed. From Communards/Annie Lennox/Smiths dykey lesbian, through majorly hippy/ alternative vibes to my current EccentricElder /Advanced Style look. DMs go with everything!
I have been sorting my Autumn/Winter clothes this week and was overjoyed to see DMs that I had forgotten.

I have
3 pairs of Amilita boots, grey, green and brown. (I’m wearing the15 year old brown ones today)
Green suede ankle boots, my favourites
Khaki fur lined boots
Tan leather and black leather boots with fur linings. You can turn them down.
These are at the very least 20 years old. I’m going to find out if the feet can be re-lined because they were so comfortable.

(I started a thread about my painful feet asking for advice. On Reddit I found suggestions for wearing trainer socks inside my tights to stop the seam rubbing, for cushion padding and blister tape. This is totally a health issue, I have chronic arthritis and it’s affecting my legs and feet this year. I thought I would not be able to wear my beloved DMs but I am feeling optimistic.)
OP go for it, buy those DMs, they are great!

BigButtons · 18/09/2025 17:20

Brilliant- thank you all- you have inspired me. I love the look of the other boots mentioned they are really beautiful . I would have them all, but there I something bout DMs that makes a statement. Next time I am in town I will visit the shop and try some in to get an idea of sizing and fit 🙂

Anyone remember DMs back in the early nineties with what I can only describe as a spoon-shaped toe box? I had some lovely red/brown ones. Heavens knows why I got rid of them. Never been able to find any since.

BigButtons · 18/09/2025 07:50

@Floisme why do you prefer Solvair? Are they better made?

Yes and like other posters have said, I think Solovair are better made than modern DMs (although I've not tried the DM 'Made in Britain' range). Also I like to support UK manufacturers where I can and I understand Solovair make all their shoes in their Northampton factory. I think they're definitely worth a try if you can find a stockist near you.

Also I got fed up of Dr Marten's marketing, and particularly the way they presented themselves as some kind of independent brand for free thinkers when they're basically a multi national fashion label just like the rest. To be fair to them, they may have toned that down more recently but it was enough to put me off them.

BigButtons · 18/09/2025 19:03

I had a good look in the Solivair website and followed their instructions on measuring which MUST be wrong/ they say to measure the foot length and then add 5 cm to find your size/ this would put me at a size 10!

Floisme · 18/09/2025 19:11

I don’t think I’ve ever bought Solovair online so I’ve always been able to try on before buying, but I’ve always bought my standard size without any problem.

LeedsZebra90 · 18/09/2025 19:13

What size are you? The kids sizes go up quite high, I'm a 4 and get them from the kids section - they're softer, have zips and cheaper.

My 72 year old mum lives in docs!

UpMyself · 18/09/2025 19:41

@BigButtons , I'm in my 50s and have a few pairs of Solovair boots. My favourites are the NPS Solovair | Womens Boots, Shoes & Loafers | Made in England – Tagged "Dealer-Boot" – NPS Solovair UK
I also have the Astronauts, Derby Boots and Monkey boots.
As if that wasn't enough, I have the Toast Mary Janes and Toast Jade Boots.

I go down a size in the Solovair unisex boots, but regular size in the women's shoes.

Plastictreees · 18/09/2025 19:44

I’m younger but think docs look good on all ages. My fave pair is my oxblood leonore Chelsea boots which are fur lined.

UpMyself · 18/09/2025 19:44

@BigButtons , add 5 mm not 5 cm.

... or fit according to the length of your foot, adding 5mm to your measurement for comfort.

Crushed23 · 18/09/2025 20:27

They’re for any age. I’m in my 30s and planning to buy a pair this winter. I last owned a pair in the 2000s when they were my school shoes!

You sound very traditional.

Are you planning on wearing twinsets and a tweed skirt in your fifties?

NotMeNoNo · 18/09/2025 20:58

I'm 55, I love my DM loafers.

Obviously not everyone goes for that style but doesn't mean you can't give it a try.

Oh sorry!

Please ignore me. I misread your post. Apologies.

LilyCanna · 18/09/2025 21:58

I have had a pair of classic style cherry red DMs for a couple of years and they are a very good shape for my feet (much wider around the toes than any other boots I've seen) and do look nice but the heels STILL rub. Not looking forward to the process of breaking my heels in again this autumn to acquire the necessary calluses, and I've never got to the point of being able to wear them if I'm doing a lot of walking that day.

Aparecium · 18/09/2025 22:15

I bought my first pair when I was 57. I love them! They're Pascals with a zip over the tongue. The laces hold the zip, so I could remove it if I wanted and just have ordinary lace up boots. The boots also have a zip inside the ankle, because ai was worried I would struggle to get them on and off, but once broken in I don't seem to need that inner zip any more.

I say my first pair, because I can see myself buying more pairs in the future!

Wool socks. Not hiking socks, they're too thick. But proper wool socks make a massive difference. With wool socks I can wear my DMs all day, but not with cotton socks.

Also Scholl do a product which is like a slightly padded sticky-back fabric. You can stick it to your foot or to the shoe. I stick it inside the heels of my DMs. I only need it on one hall now, the other has softened enough.

Lily that makes more sense sense- I am tired 😂

That's a shame, they have some lovely stuff in size 10. Smile
