Dr Martens in your 50s anyone?

I have a few pairs of converse boots which I love. I have seen women at work wearing DMs- they are a bit younger than me but they look great on.
I am tempted to get some but concerned I would just look daft and that they will shred my feet into bits.
if you have a pair can you tell me what style they are? I quite like the look of the platform ones tbh😬

58 here and proud DM wearer. I wish that I’d kept my dm shoes from the 80s.

PegDope · 18/09/2025 08:33

I’m 45 and have two pairs of 8 hole boots. Black and blue. I love them. They do take a bit of time to break in - hammer and a towel does the trick.

They're warm, waterproof and go with everything.

WorriedRelative · 18/09/2025 08:39

I'm mid forties and have DM 1460s, Chelsea boots, Mary Jane's and sandals. Love them, they don't shred my feet but 1460s don't give my high instep enough space so require a bit of leather stretch to get them comfy. The others have been super comfortable, I try to wear any new footwear gradually the first few times though.

WorriedRelative · 18/09/2025 08:40

Oh and I have friends older than me, certainly into their 70s who wear DMs regularly.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/09/2025 08:43

I’m early 50s and love my DMs. I have the Voss sandals in different colours, some Blaine sandals, some Mattison slide wedges in the leopard, some pink boots…
Awesome, all of them! The boots do take some breaking in, but it’s worth it!

Nearly 60 here and wear my DM's with dresses, shorts and jeans. I recommend the Pascales as they are softer leather and great from first wear - no breaking in required.

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 18/09/2025 08:47

They had their heyday in the 70s and early 80s so to my mind they are especially suitable for a woman in her sixties like me, who remembers them as the accessory of choice for skinheads (both Nazi and anti-fascist) and punk rockers.

I buy them -- when I can afford it!

Daughn · 18/09/2025 08:52

Just seen the 1480's now come in a soft leather version too

Offthecorporateratrace · 18/09/2025 08:52

I am mid 50’s and I have brown DM’s and black Solvair.
If I was buying again I would definitely buy Solvair, for me they are better quality and I think look better.

FishPie2 · 18/09/2025 08:53

Dr. Martens stopped mass production of its standard line in the UK on April 1, 2003, due to declining sales and to avoid bankruptcy. Production was moved to China and Thailand, closing several UK factories and resulting in job losses. However, the brand reintroduced a premium "Made in England" collection, which is still made at the original Wollaston factory in the UK....
I bought mine, except the sandals, when they were made in UK and only needed a little breaking in.

Memberofstaff · 18/09/2025 08:54

I'm 58 and have several pairs. By far the best are the soft leather ones as they don't need to be broken in.

I'd advise buying a second hand pair from vinted and see how you get on. I find the boots are fine but their sandals don't work for me at all.

BilbaoBaggage · 18/09/2025 08:59

I am 53 and love my DMs. Wore them for the first time this autumn yesterday.

Floisme · 18/09/2025 09:00

BigButtons · 18/09/2025 07:50

@Floisme why do you prefer Solvair? Are they better made?

I'll come back and answer in a bit although other posters have already said a lot of it.

Antimimisti · 18/09/2025 09:03

Early 50s and have some heeled DM shoes, DM t-bar sandals and heeled ankle boots. I have very short legs so the classic style boot doesn't suit me.

Iocainepowder · 18/09/2025 09:08

Do it!

Also i didn’t know they now did soft leather ones! I may treat myself.

RachelshouldhavegonetoParis · 18/09/2025 09:11

I’m 46 and still wearing my 1990s 11-holers!

CicerosHead · 18/09/2025 09:37

They are boots. If you have legs, you can wear them, age has nothing to do with anything.

What are over 50s supposed to wear, hotter, pavers or something?

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 18/09/2025 09:42

On these sort of threads I always wonder who's opinion OPs are fearful of? 🤔

Mid 50's and I can't think of anyone I meet on a daily basis who would object/laugh/be shocked at my sartorial choices.

I think younger people in particular will think you rock 👏

Climbinghigher · 18/09/2025 09:44

Wouldn’t occur to me not to. (Mid 50s). Wore enough of them in my 20’s! I have DM clogs that are comfy - and I get a lot of comments on them.

HearstOida · 18/09/2025 09:48

I think whether they need breaking in or are ever comfortable would be dependent on your foot shape? I’ve always found them comfortable from the beginning. So I would recommend trying on in a shop and considering how much they would need to soften to be comfortable.
I haven’t found that modern pairs have the durability of my 90s pairs, so I would try Solovair before another pair of DMs.

RB68 · 18/09/2025 09:49

For the feet shredding my daughter has some silicone heels that go over a sock and then a smaller sock over the top - they saved her feet as her feet v boney and were getting huge blisters whilst breaking in the DMs

Violinist64 · 18/09/2025 09:51

Of course you can and I know people a lot older than you who do. I would wear them if they were not so very uncomfortable but my compromise is vintage Red or Dead T-bar Ziggy shoes in different colours. I also have a pair of Kickers T-bar shoes, too. At my age, my grandmothers wore old lady comfortable shoes and clothes. They always looked smart and I, too, like to be comfortable but I refuse to dress like an old lady. I have my own style, probably somewhat eccentric, but I like to think l look good without looking like mutton dressed as lamb.

Kerrylass · 18/09/2025 09:56

46 year old woman here with Chelsea docs - love them but they are a mare to get off.
Would've got the ones with the zips if i was getting them again

Have you got kids? If you have, this is why you had them surely!

dottiedodah · 18/09/2025 10:14

I dont have any personally .But think they look good on anyone really. My friend (older than you) has some and looks great! I dont get why us girls seem to worry about our clothes so much. and many MA or older guys just seem to wear any old thing!
