I have a few pairs of converse boots which I love. I have seen women at work wearing DMs- they are a bit younger than me but they look great on.
I am tempted to get some but concerned I would just look daft and that they will shred my feet into bits.
if you have a pair can you tell me what style they are? I quite like the look of the platform ones tbh😬

DMs are for everyone! They do a soft style called Aimilita Triumph which I have, didn’t need breaking in at all.

cleo333 · 18/09/2025 22:35

I wear them for sandals and boots but got the soft boots ( bliss ) , I’m 57 and love them x

I have several pairs of DM boots (I'm almost 50) and tbh I associate them with older people anyway? The youth that wore them in the 90s are still wearing them, marching into their 50s and beyond 😂
That aside, I don't think age should make any difference, wear what you want to wear!

Abso fucking lutely

as a fashion item, if you are in you late 40-50’s they really were a proper fashion piece.

why not? I saw a great pair the other day that tempted me (50) 🙂

mamagogo1 · 18/09/2025 22:42

I have black 8 hole dm’s, the original style and oxblood 8 hole Lanx which are very similar to fm’s and handmade in the uk (you even get a card telling you who your bookmaker was)

YourLemonTiger · 18/09/2025 22:45

Don't bother with branded DMs OP because most of them are made in China now and they're not as good as they used to be.
I buy the same shoes and boots from Solovair who used to make DMs in the UK and still use the DM lasts.
They are expensive but excellent quality (and customer service)

Also I'm older than you and still happily wear 6 hole boots and the chunky brogues (both made on a DM last).

Bufftailed · 18/09/2025 22:51

They’re universal. All ages. Not had any issues with pain. Love my winter boots

Kendodd · 18/09/2025 22:54

Why do you think they'd shred your feet? DMs are really good quality footwear.

Castlerigg · 18/09/2025 23:06

I have a pair of the soft leather ones, in a colour very similar to the old oxblood ones. No breaking in required, they were comfortable from the start. They do scuff easily, but I found some polish that’s a good colour match, so they look great even though I’ve had them three or four years.

Icanflyhigh · 18/09/2025 23:09

Approaching 50 fast, I live in my DMs, they look great on everybody x

OnGoldenPond · 18/09/2025 23:11

Been wearing DMs since my teenage years. Used to buy them from the Army and Navy Surplus stores back in the day . Now in my 50s. I have no intention of giving them up.

Most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn and last for years. At the moment have classic black shoe style and cherry red punched brogues. I find they don’t rub at all if you wear thick socks with them at least for the first few weeks.

DramaLlamacchiato · 18/09/2025 23:12

Im in my 50s and wear doc marten boots. I 3 pairs of the soft leather pascals in different colours. I like them.

SummerbodyIwish · 18/09/2025 23:32

I’m 59 and have several pairs of docs. Black, green and cream. Also recommend the pascales. Lovely and soft. Wear with everything

Moll2020 · 18/09/2025 23:35

I wear them and I’m late 50s. I have black boots, pink boots, both Pascales, the leather is soft so they don’t rub your feet, clogs and sandals. They are so comfy. I’m also 5’11 so was concerned about being too tall in them but came to my senses!

kippersmum · 18/09/2025 23:45

I'm 50 very soon. Absolutely wear DMs but you would be doing yourself a disservice.

You need Solovair boots, made in the same factory as proper old Doc Martens. Best shoes I have ever bought.

I got mine after finding a MN thread bemoaning how modern DMs are crap, as I found out after spending a fortune on a pair of boots that lasted less than 2 years!

My Solovair boots have just come out of the cupboard and it's like putting a pair of slippers on. I have absolutely no connection to the company etc. I was just seriously pissed off about how shit my very expensive DMs were

ChelseaDetective · 18/09/2025 23:46

I’m 54 and have the classic 1460 boots in black soft leather and I also have a pair of Sinclair platforms in dark brown. I only started wearing them about 5 years ago because I was into a certain brand of clothing where the dresses were styled with them in the model photos and I thought it looked like a good idea!

They do take a while to wear in but they’re really comfy once they are. I broke mine in by wearing them with those silicone heel covers (I think they’re for heel conditions) for a good long while, so they were comfy while being broken in!

I find Docs all run very small, so you might want to try a size up as well if you’re ordering online.

I don’t like Solovairs, too stiff and don’t like the ‘almond’ toe shape.

I do like Sturlini as a similar style to docs but they’re very spendy.

Yikes101 · 19/09/2025 00:33

I’m 49 and love my docs. They’ve been a bit neglected over summer but I’m looking forward to having warm and dry feet over winter. They just take a bit of wearing around the house whilst they crease around how your feet bend.
I’ve looked at solovairs since seeing them mentioned on here but I don’t like them, they look too polite.
My descriptions are awful but I’m sure someone will understand!

Orchidlover75 · 19/09/2025 00:35

Im aged 49 and have been wearing a pair of Dr Martens for a few years, a Christmas present from my partner. They are the Pascal 1460 style and have been so comfortable right from the start, they aren't clumpy and they are still in great condition, even
though I've worn them loads. I've found them true to size.
It doesn't matter how old you are, so don't even think about that!

ClaireEclair · 19/09/2025 01:31

I’m 48 and I wear them. It does take a bit of time for your feet to adjust but once you wear them in they are so comfy. And they last for years. My last pair I chucked after 8 years of constant wearing.

Highlighta · 19/09/2025 05:52

I'm mid 50s and have two pairs. The pair I wear the most are the kids 1460 as they have the zip on the side, and they are just easier to get on and off.

You mentioned the platform style. My dd has some, and I tried them as we the same size, and they are really not as comfortable imo.

I feel like I am at an age now where I am past having to get blisters and wear in harsh boots. I would not wear those Jadons as much as my kids version or my softer leather lace ups if I had bought them.

They are beautiful though. On someone else's feet 🤭

sashh · 19/09/2025 06:08

I'm late 50s, I have two pairs that are about 25 years old. They are indestructible.

BigButtons · 19/09/2025 06:25

@Highlighta I am totally with regarding the comfort factor. The leather converse boots I have are super soft and fit like a glove. You make a good point re the Jaydons . They look beautiful but will probably not be practical. I like the look of the 1460. I will definitely be trying pairs on in the shop.

If I can find somewhere in Brighton that sells Solovair I will try these on as well. My feet are rather narrow with high insteps and arches and so many boots seem to be made for those with wider feet. I don’t know of that is same with DMs ?

@BigButtons , try Jump the Gun in Gardner Street, or Cordelia James in Lewes

Tupperwarefan · 19/09/2025 11:18

Specific question for the doc wearers - when you wear them with a long dress, do you wear them with tights or long socks? I have my cherry reds from the 90’s and wondered about wearing them with my long dresses…but…socks or tights??

Tights.

PestoHoliday · 19/09/2025 11:30

I wear socks and leggings under a dress when I wear docs.
