Hi I've just bought this skirt from M&S but not sure what to wear it with. The model is wearing it with black which I would rather avoid. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am 5'8, size 10/12 and apple shaped so would prefer not to tuck anything into the waistband.

Well, for once I’m flummoxed. It’s such a harsh colour - difficult to throw together with pretty much anything except itself. Awful with black, garish with white … You could try a denim shirt. Personally I’d throw it back into the sea and scoot over to Zara …

Sorry!

(I find I have a better relationship with items when my first thought on encountering them is Oh, that would go so well with X! Where X is something I already own.)

Doggymummar · 09/09/2025 12:29

I would go with 💛 🟡 yellow a cropped boxy top. It's my favourite colour and I have several in my wardrobe

No that's fine, I thought it was just me! It's a shame, it really looks lovely on but can't think of anything to put with it. Winter white maybe, less harsh?

A million years ago when M&S opened what may have been the world’s biggest branch, in Manchester, I wandered around the miles and miles and miles of store space - and all I could conclude was that there must have been multiple accidents at the dye factory.

Your skirt reminds me of that day …

AndYesTheWeeDonkeys · 09/09/2025 12:38

Ok - have thought: a tweed jacket that’s not actually blue but has various blues running through the weave. Belted, over … something.

But then there’s the difficulty of boots. Black again too harsh; brown would be vomitous with that almost neon shade of violently shiny polyester.

Nope. I have nothing. 🤷‍♀️

CornishMade · 09/09/2025 13:29

Gosh, harsh responses! I really like it, though am commenting without suggestions, apologies. Hopefully you can work it out, it's a great colour.

OverlyFragrant · 09/09/2025 13:30

Grey or a burnt orange

madgreenlemons · 09/09/2025 13:51

I’d go with a soft charcoal wool jumper

Careeringallovertheplace · 09/09/2025 15:09

Eh? Can't believe the reactions to this beautiful colour. Agree best not with black or white. Personally I like blue and brown as a combo

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/09/2025 15:18

Bizarre comments, it’s hardly outlandish. I like the colour and shape, shame it’s polyester though.

I’d wear it with a slouchy black wool jumper, but I like the volume on volume look.

I agree with this. It’s nice and looks good with black

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/09/2025 15:26

It would also look nice with a white or cream jumper. I think it’s a wool texture you need. Disagree with pps above suggesting yellow or orange, too CBeebies.

TrimayrAcademy · 09/09/2025 16:26

I think it is a beautiful colour and think it would look lovely with a soft grey jumper. I would go cropped and some kind of grey boots.

Failing that a really nice Jade green and gold accessories.

KateMiskin · 09/09/2025 16:30

I like the colour and think it will go well with charcoal grey or forest green.

Perhaps I am losing my sight because I don't see it as neon or garish.

LinedOverLatte · 09/09/2025 16:47

I read the comments before looking at it - was expecting a disaster but it’s a lovely skirt.

I’d go for a slouchy, thick knit off-white jumper and ‘bone’ coloured boots (or tan). Also think PPs suggestion of charcoal grey would be lovely.

The right shade of brown could work too.

MarmaladeHoverfly · 09/09/2025 17:17

One person's harsh is another person's dramatic…

I'm always wary of judging colour from an image, but on my screen it looks like an inky blue and on that basis I think you have plenty of options. My immediate thought was emerald green, but I agree burnt orange might also work. You could also play up the drama and use the skirt as a contrast to an otherwise all-white look - especially if you also go for a contrast of textures and wear a fluffy or mohairy white jumper. White shoes/boots/trainers if you go that route, obviously. (OTOH, polyester… yuck.)

LemonTT · 09/09/2025 17:21

A rich burgundy/ purple or a burnt orange could work with the deep blue.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 09/09/2025 17:41

3rd, 4th, 5thing the last comments. I'm failing to see what's so terrible about the colour or impossible to match. And yes black and navy are fine.

bridgetreilly · 09/09/2025 17:42

Lime green?

impressivelycunty · 09/09/2025 17:47

Blimey - harsh responses! I’d wear it with an apple/emerald green jumper. Or soft grey/burnt orange/burgundy - loads of options!

Blingismything · 09/09/2025 17:54

I’d look for a cream short sleeved jumper. Cashmere, angora or a similar soft knit.

Mistletoewench · 09/09/2025 17:55

I actually saw that skirt in store and it’s beautiful, much better than the picture in real life.
it was paired with a crisp white top , which looked lovely

Delilahsscissors · 09/09/2025 18:02

Am I getting a different skirt via the link! It’s just a black or dark navy blue pleated skirt. Nothing remarkable or neon and outlandish ‘accident in a dye factory’ at all.

TiredofLDN · 09/09/2025 18:06

I don’t hate the black top with it, but an alternative would be Cream top. T shirt or jumper. Or maybe even a tucked in silky shirt if you’re feeling brave, but be careful of how it looks underneath the skirt.

Shoes you could really have fun with. If I had black or silver knee high boots I think I probably would go with those.

Ive been coveting this skirt for a while, but they dont have a size 8!

I'd style it with black, a skinny fit roll neck for work, a slightly cropped short sleeve top that can be worn on or off the shoulders for a night out and a slouchy one shoulder jumper for a more casual look.
