I’ll start…

Belstaff Fieldmaster jacket - it’s heavy, I do not like the feeling of waxed jacket much, the belt just gets in the way, and I should have sized up…

Nude leather court heels, JL own brand - beautifully made but the heels are so high, they look out of place at work.

Black patent penny loafers, also JL - they are perfect in every way, but I just feel frumpy in them.

Tan coloured cropped coat from M&S, the colour doe suit me. Resolved to wear it out this winter and only buy tan in accessories.

Can also relate to the multiple dresses that make me look pregnant. I’m a size 10, albeit somewhat short waisted, and have a plethora of dresses that have people asking me when I’m due….

Newmeagain · 01/09/2025 13:36

I love this thread!

I can particularly relate to all the bad vinted buys. I still love Vinted - have had a few great bargains - but initially went a bit mad and bought lots of things that seemed a bargain but really were not something I would have bought otherwise. So now I am very disciplined (or try to be).

My worst buy recently is an expensive shirt I bought on holiday - it’s much too big and I have no idea what I was thinking. I think it was the fact that it was a gorgeous shop and I wanted to buy something…

happytobemrsg · 01/09/2025 13:43

Cos v neck T-shirts. Supposed to be THE t-shirt but the v is so wide and flappy I can’t get it to sit nicely on me.

I'm a size ten. A good, all-round-in-most-shops size ten. But for some reason in my head I'm a big size 12, so I keep buying clothes that are just too big. A lot of the time it's OK and doesn't matter too much, until I see myself in photographs, where I either look as though I'm wearing my mum's clothes, or I look like I got dressed at size 12 and shrank. I bought some quite expensive walking trousers but did that whole 'well, a ten might be too small and I'd like to have room to climb fences and a bit of give' and bought size 12. They make me look like the hind legs of a pantomime elephant.

If only my head and my actual size could come to terms with each other.

My mother has done this for the better part of 40 years! It's like a persistent, very mild and faintly inconvenient form of body dysmorphia where she can't get her head round how small she actually is. Bizarrely, she always thinks of me as slim and slight even though I'm a good 2 sizes bigger than she is.

GhostInTheWashingMachine · 01/09/2025 14:59

A floaty green-and-white elasticated-waist skirt which I imagined myself slipping elegantly over a swimsuit on way to/from the beach. The green was practically neon & I looked as glamorous as a milkmaid in a Jane Austen novel with childbearing hips

"I think it was the fact that it was a gorgeous shop and I wanted to buy something"

Yes, I so relate to that, @Newmeagain!

YouOKHun · 01/09/2025 20:38

Oh yes @Newmeagain the determination not to leave a nice shop empty handed - dangerous. I have also been caught out by “that would be ideal for the life I don’t have. I’ll buy the vertiginous heeled, aggressively pointy, fiendishly expensive shoes for my life spent working on scruffy wards/MH units and walking dogs, mucking out children”. Then I spend years looking at the expensive item before eventually relunctantly selling them on Vinted to someone upthread who ends up permanently damaging themselves wearing them. But at least they have reason to wear them and haven’t paid what I paid to not even wear the coveted but totally unsuitable instruments of torture. I have to accept my life is more Hotter than it is Louboutin.

A pair of vertiginous (love this word) cork wedge sandals. About 6 inches at the heel and one inch at the toe. The straps were thin plaits of colourful cord (sexy hippy) - i loved them !

But! The second time i ever wore them i fell arse over tit in a car park (sober) and hurt my knee. DH tried to catch me as i went down. All in slow motion - i remember it so clearly. I didn't want him to help cos i knew i'd take him down with me so moved my arm away and hit the deck. Ouch!

Put them out for charity next day.

You are me, I have exactly the same story although I still have the shoes! They are lovely to ook ant and I have owned them for many many years now… and I’ve worn them exactly once.

I found a Michael Kors leopard print trench coat in TK Maxx and bought it, and didn’t even wear it once. It immediately transformed me into Bet Lynch. That went to the charity shop!

ChelseaDetective · 01/09/2025 22:16

A Barbour snorkel style coat I bought 15 years ago. It looks nice but its freezing cold to the touch and it says its a size 16 but it was too small when I was a 16. I’m now a size 12 and still nowhere near getting into the bugger as the shoulders are really tiny.

I might just get rid!

Saponarium · 01/09/2025 22:18

A couple of tops from Muji. Both beautiful quality but I look like a peasant from communist China, and not in a good way.

A beautiful velvet jumpsuit from Anthropologie. My size but made for a woman giant at least 2 foot taller in both legs and torso. Baffling.

A pair of Next jeans. Spent hours (days) trawling shops to find THE pair of jeans, finally found these - perfect fit and comfortable to boot!! But whenever I put them on I want to take them off. I think I'm starting to realise that even the perfect jeans make me feel profoundly 'meh'.

Aarg, me too. I love a massive Japanese style frock but I’ve had to give in and start putting a belt on if I’m going to an event where there will be ‘chatting’.

TheGetAlongGang · 01/09/2025 22:28

Ill never forget the mustard blazer

I liked it,bought it,it arrived,I put it on,looked/felt good and went out to meet a friend for coffee

By the time I got home,dp had arrived back from work and saw me in it for the first time

First words out of his mouth after saying hello was 'I've had shits that colour'

I just couldn't look at it in the same light again so off to my works jumble sale it went

I should stop asking his opinion really

campista · 01/09/2025 22:53

Thank you! My mascara is completely gone, I'm still laughing at the pirate boots and the cow print jeans, to name a few!!

YouOKHun · 02/09/2025 01:07

I’ve thought of two others, nice purchases ruined by unsupportive children. I bought a very nice fine wool scarf with different coloured Pom poms around the edge. I walked into the kitchen to show it off and very casually my twelve year old (at the time) son said, ‘oh hello Mr Tumble’. Ruined. Never wore it again.

When my DC were small they liked nothing better than to rewatch a DVD of Willo the Wisp because they found Kenneth Williams’ voice amusing and liked the characters. I bought a really lovely pink tulle skirt and my daughter said admiringly, ‘Mummy you look just like Mavis Cruet the Fat Fairy’.

I love these! On me, they hang well. But I think t-shirt fit can be highly individual.

Mine is loafers. I love loafers, but every single pair gives me blisters. I had a lovely patent leather pair which felt like a great fit, and 2 hours into wearing them my feet were blistered and bleeding. And then I bought a metallic pair which were too small from the get-go AND kept them.

Sold them on Vinted for 10% of the original price

BlueEyedBogWitch · 31/08/2025 18:42

Cow print wide legged jeans.

I have no idea what the fuck I was thinking.

This has made my day! 😃

Pigtailsandall · 02/09/2025 06:55

Oh just thought of another one! Few years ago I bought a stiff cottton shirt with upright collar and buttons down the front. I chose it in a faded navy - classic, I thought. I wore it to work and when dh saw me he said I was a decade late for Chairman Mao's revolution.

It went to the charity shop

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 02/09/2025 07:09

A pair of floral Superga plimsolls. They looked so pretty but they killed my feet. Eventually went in the charity bag. A Fatface pinafore that even with thick black tights I felt half naked in as it was so short!

Laiste · 02/09/2025 07:40

Oh ! Superga plimsole/trainers ! I'd forgotten about that one. About 6 years ago.

I confess i was swayed by not only the S&B threads but by seeing that Kate (Princess) wore them.

I was so exited and when they got here they were hard as rocks! I pretended they weren't and i pretended they didn't slip off my heels no matter what i did with the laces and i pretended i was pleased with them. Did i ever wear them? No.

In my head i always found an excuse on the day not to.

It was about 2 years before i admitted it all to myself and put them in the charity pile 🙄

Waaayyy too many but a few stick out

I bought a gorgeous pale pink dress with cream spots

Tried it on and my dp tells me I look like Mr blobby's nanna (I knew i should have got it in the pale blue!)

A lovely raincoat in navy

It arrived and dp informs me his mum has the same one in red (I worship my mil,she makes mary Poppins look like a newborn baby killer, but I do not want to match coats with her)

Beige boots

The seller said they where 'wide fit'

My arse they where-id have struggled to get a matchstick in them

The beige coat

'A winter staple' glamour magazine claimed

I just looked like inspector gadget

In fact anything beige-i just can't carry it off

A gorgeous dress-pale green and cream on vinted

I ordered it and the world's worst bridesmaid dress from the 80's arrived

In fact the 80's would have sent it back

More than one dress that makes me look 9 months pregnant

You've made my day! What a good start to this wet Tuesday having someone make you laugh. Thank you.

FurForksSake · 31/08/2025 18:19

Oh yes, I bought some linen next dresses from vinted, I need to rehome those as they are absolutely not something I’d wear. What I was thinking is beyond me.

I also bought those Next linen dresses, think they were raved about on here, not me at all, felt like I was cosplaying someone's elderly aunt!

BoboTheBear · 02/09/2025 09:55

A beautiful, soft, high quality black leather biker jacket about 10 years ago. It was 50% off, and even then it was more expensive than any other jacket/coat I'd got.

But it's a classic! It really suits me! It goes with loads of my clothes! It's an investment!

I wore it about 3 times. Turns out leather is really hot (I overheat easily) and I just don't feel comfortable when clothes have no "give."

I could forgive myself for this, if only I hadn't experienced it and then gone out and bought EXACTLY THE SAME JACKET in a different colour. But it's a classic! It really suits me! Etc etc.

Both jackets still hanging in my wardrobe, unworn for many years, because I still can't admit to my mistakes. It's probably only a matter of time before I buy one in a third colour.

heartsinvisiblefury · 02/09/2025 12:51

I had a period of buying those shirts with jumpers attached to them - shrumpers. Bit ridiculous when I got hot and wanted to take only my jumper off but couldn’t because it was attached to my shirt.

Hello, I am your woman two foot taller with very long legs. I can reassure you that a velvet jumpsuit still makes me look like a fat penguin / seal hybrid. I bought three off Vinted before I realised this.
