I’ll start…

Belstaff Fieldmaster jacket - it’s heavy, I do not like the feeling of waxed jacket much, the belt just gets in the way, and I should have sized up…

Nude leather court heels, JL own brand - beautifully made but the heels are so high, they look out of place at work.

Black patent penny loafers, also JL - they are perfect in every way, but I just feel frumpy in them.

Tan coloured cropped coat from M&S, the colour doe suit me. Resolved to wear it out this winter and only buy tan in accessories.

Cow print wide legged jeans.

I have no idea what the fuck I was thinking.

95% of all the shoes I've ever owned. Comfy and lovely in the shop. 20 mins walking outside and either my two smallest toes or my bony heels are left skin-free and bleeding. Stupid feet.

I’m with you there. 🙄🥲

BridgetRandomfuck · 31/08/2025 19:01

Splashed out on a Burberry trench coat (it was in an outlet in the States at at time when the exchange rate was v good). I must have worn it about three times. It just wasn’t me - looked awful done up, and couldn’t manage the clever tie-the-belt-behind-you without it looking really stupid. It was about the fourth mac I’d tried, I thought going to the high-end source might solve all the problems, but no. I am not a trench coat person. Luckily I sold it on Vestiaire and got most of my money back.

A pair of Flatform silver sandals, two years ago, they were too heavy for my feet, gave me blisters the only time I wore them and husband disliked them as they made me taller than him.
A beige mac about fifteen years ago from M&S, went out to buy tan ankle boots! Mac made me washed out and like an old lady, donated earlier this year.
A few linen dresses from Vinted which were not very good condition, binned them, don't know why I bought them!
A navy joules jacket that is now too small for me as I was very stressed three years ago and bought a smaller size,! I have lost some weight and hoping eventually I will be able to zip it up, but not sure I even like it now! Offered to one of my daughters who said it was too old for her!

RobinTheCavewoman · 31/08/2025 19:14

A blazer that is the same shade of blue that Reform use. Never wear it in case people think I'm one of them.

MissyB1 · 31/08/2025 19:14

A long quilted beige hooded coat from M&S last winter, doesn’t help that I bought it a size too big, I look like my Gran - and she’s been dead 30 years 😂

Laiste · 31/08/2025 19:27

A pair of vertiginous (love this word) cork wedge sandals. About 6 inches at the heel and one inch at the toe. The straps were thin plaits of colourful cord (sexy hippy) - i loved them !

But! The second time i ever wore them i fell arse over tit in a car park (sober) and hurt my knee. DH tried to catch me as i went down. All in slow motion - i remember it so clearly. I didn't want him to help cos i knew i'd take him down with me so moved my arm away and hit the deck. Ouch!

Put them out for charity next day.

Cyclingmummy1 · 31/08/2025 19:31

R&B black patent loafers. They are too small. I was convinced they would stretch and they haven't. Much prefer my Gabor ones.

Reminds me of my next door neighbour when I was a child. At the age of 14 she spent her Christmas money on a pair of shoes her mother said were unsuitable and refused to buy. She wore them to school, they were indeed unsuitable and she fell over, twisted her ankle and broke the heel of the shoe. She also got detention for wearing non uniform shoes.

lindyloo57 · 31/08/2025 20:18

Pleated skirts, I must of brought 3 , I sold all three on ebay at a loss, they just don't suit me, I just feel dowdy in them, but like the look on others.

proname · 31/08/2025 20:19

A beautiful sequin top. . For some reasons, i did not feltfind it suited me. I would try it on and then decide to wear something else… Then one day i went to a party and saw someone with the same top but much slimmer than me and it just suited her so well. I put it on vinted the next day.

i have 2 expensive-ish handbags that i do not use because they are too beautiful to use! Such a shame! I always find an excuse not to use them: i wont need a bag this large, its too fancy for the occasion, i worry someone might steal it in the restaurant/theater and ao on…

lindyloo57 · 31/08/2025 20:22

A pair of gabor black suede high leg ankle boots, paid £90 trying to sell on ebay, they just hurt my toes and won't give, I have 3 other pairs of gabor boots, one pair are over 10 years old, so they usually are a good fit for me.

I'm a size ten. A good, all-round-in-most-shops size ten. But for some reason in my head I'm a big size 12, so I keep buying clothes that are just too big. A lot of the time it's OK and doesn't matter too much, until I see myself in photographs, where I either look as though I'm wearing my mum's clothes, or I look like I got dressed at size 12 and shrank. I bought some quite expensive walking trousers but did that whole 'well, a ten might be too small and I'd like to have room to climb fences and a bit of give' and bought size 12. They make me look like the hind legs of a pantomime elephant.

If only my head and my actual size could come to terms with each other.

My partner does this because he values comfort over style most of the time. Looks like he's had to borrow old trousers off a bigger, taller, scruffier guy.

A gorgeous pair of brown leather over the knee boots. On the online very tall and thin model they looked fabulous.
I looked like a little fat pirate.

I have also made this exact same mistake 😭

same here, I almost never buy shoes for exactly this reason, nothing is ever comfortable. It’s so annoying and I have no idea how people can so easily wear so many different types of shoe (Birkenstocks for example which everyone else says are so comfy and yet made my feet bleed within the hour)

Nellieinthebarn · 31/08/2025 20:59

Lucy and Yak dungarees, I thought they looked casual and arty, I looked like a giant toddler.

Any jeans wider than a classic straight leg, I'm just too short, and wide ones make me look like a lampshade. Also they are a nightmare to tuck into wellies. More floaty fabric like linen or jersey is OK though.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/08/2025 21:07

Dainty, black patent sandals from Russell % Bromley, about £130 20 years ago. The back strap just didn't work and they flip flopped. Awful, wore them twice

Birkenstock Arizona - so uncomfortable.

A Ralph Lauren tote - it just doesn't work.

PadamPadamPDoom · 31/08/2025 21:10

@ButtercupLane I am breathless over the fat pirate! 😂😂😂

All the times I have bought the very last item in the sale, 85% off, because I’ve fallen in love with the brand and it’s the only item I could ever possibly afford - and it’s good to be challenged by difficult clothes surely?

Fuck dat. Half the time I look idiotic. Then some fool slings a compliment my way - giving me confidence to embark on the next massive mistake …

TheGetAlongGang · 31/08/2025 21:22

Waaayyy too many but a few stick out

I bought a gorgeous pale pink dress with cream spots

Tried it on and my dp tells me I look like Mr blobby's nanna (I knew i should have got it in the pale blue!)

A lovely raincoat in navy

It arrived and dp informs me his mum has the same one in red (I worship my mil,she makes mary Poppins look like a newborn baby killer, but I do not want to match coats with her)

Beige boots

The seller said they where 'wide fit'

My arse they where-id have struggled to get a matchstick in them

The beige coat

'A winter staple' glamour magazine claimed

I just looked like inspector gadget

In fact anything beige-i just can't carry it off

A gorgeous dress-pale green and cream on vinted

I ordered it and the world's worst bridesmaid dress from the 80's arrived

In fact the 80's would have sent it back

More than one dress that makes me look 9 months pregnant

@ButtercupLane Grin I look like a menopausal pantomime villain in mine. Every time I put them on my DH does that extravagant panto upper leg slap on himself to remind me of what I look like. Last time he did it I said “it’s behind you!!”. He said “what is?”, I said “your marriage”. I didn’t follow through. The boots are on Vinted now.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 31/08/2025 21:45

A pair of heeled ankle boots. They were lovely, but despite not being very high, I just couldn’t walk in them. There was something about the shape of them and proportion to the heel. I discovered this as I wore them outside of the house so I couldn’t take them back. I tried wearing them a couple of times as they were pretty pricey and looked amazing, but they went off to the charity shop eventually.

Chickyhip · 31/08/2025 21:49

Some gorgeous French lace bloomers-style trousers, I had the notion of layering them under an oversized dress and a cute jumper, with lace up boots. But I’m fat and in my 50s and have yet to work up the nerve…

Camera21 · 31/08/2025 21:57

I love this thread!

SmellsLikeVictory · 31/08/2025 22:20

Me too! Feel a lot better about my bad calls. This thread has put me off pirate boots and Vinted binges 😂

A dark brown Hush knitted hoodie. It's gorgeous, however I had no idea I looked so ghastly in brown. I look like I've been dug up in it. Must be my skin tone or something.
I'm gutted, its so soft and comfortable.
