I’m in tears and don’t want to go to an event I’ve been looking forward to for months because I have nothing to wear

Please help!

I’ve put on weight and generally feel awful. I had an outfit planned that I wasn’t 100% happy with because everyone has seen my wear hundreds of times but it was ok. Problem is there’s now a heat wave and it’s a long sleeved maxi dress so no good.

I’m 5ft 3, blonde, massive boobs, big hips and huge belly but with a defined waist. If I don’t have definition I look like a weeble.

The event is like a hen do with a daytime party boat, DJ, afternoon tea and then an evening do in a pub. Daytime is mainly women 35-45 then spouses and wider group in the evening. Even if was happy with my body I think I’d struggle to know what the right kind of thing to wear was.

Please help me enjoy myself and not feel awful. Budget would be a max of £200 but that would have to include shoes/ accessories.

Get the same sort of style dress as the one you would have worn, as you know how you feel/look in that style, but with shorter sleeves - or if you see one you like that has long sleeves, get a seamstress to make the sleeves shorter. Dry those eyes, you will find something that you look great in.

I love the yellow dress on you OP!!

Me too, thought it looks lovely on you!

MKDex · 15/08/2025 20:13

The kimono is streets ahead IMO

ItsNotYou852 · 15/08/2025 20:38

I agree the yellow one looks lovely on you but it doesn't have party vibes to me.
I'm amazed at the 2 trouser suits, the black and ric-rac one was my favourite in the shop pics but doesn't do much for you, whereas the pink one I didn't rate but it looks great on you.
The polka dot definitely seems the most all day party dress, cool and comfortable as well.
The blue floral is very pretty, and the teal wrap? last one is gorgeous but for the day you described I would say the polka dot dress or the pink trouser suit would work best.
But of course it's all about which you feel the best in! Can't wait to see now!

ScribblingPixie · 15/08/2025 23:20

The green and blue kimono is by far the most flattering IMO - it looks great.

CultureAlienationBoredomandDespair · 16/08/2025 00:43

I tried everything on again today and showed DH and he mainly agreed with me. The polka dot one that is popular on here he agreed (with no prompting!) made me look broader and more boxy but I think having my arms up makes that hard to see. Also the yellow one was very tight in some places but baggy in others, which was a shame.

I think it’s between the long blue dress and green kimono and I’ll decide tomorrow. There’s also a plain blue denim Bardot dress which is nice but maybe a little plain. DSIL is going and getting ready here tomorrow so I think I’ll get more of an idea of he vibe.

DH really likes the pink jumpsuit and thinks the black one is flattering and thinks I should keep them but for a different occasion.

I found it really interesting how so many of you picked up on what colours suit me without being able to see my face. Blues, greens and pinks re definitely more my colours but black can wash me out a bit if it’s too near my face.

My opinion:

  • Yellow dress looks nicely summery but it’s not flattering. My eyes are immediately drawn to your stomach and the buttons.
  • Black floral dress looks okay but it reminds me of a school teacher as opposed to the occasion you want it for.
  • Jumpsuit with white squiggle is my favourite. I think a lot of your dresses scream “I think I’m overweight and I’m trying to hide that”. I get it, because I used to dress that way when I was bigger. But you don’t really look comfortable in most of these outfits. Whereas the jumpsuit gives an effortless, carefree look instead. I think you look a lot more confident and comfortable in it. I don’t think you’d be worried about how you look on the day either, can imagine you dancing away.
  • Pink jumpsuit suits the occasion but it’s not flattering and the eye is immediately drawn to your stomach. It also looks too long.
  • Polka dress looks okay but a bit bland. You might feel a lack of synergy with the occasion and what others wear.
  • black jumpsuit/dress (not sure what it is, in your 2nd post). If it’s a dress, keep it. If it’s a jumpsuit I don’t think the trouser part is flattering.
  • Blue ombré dress looks okay but I think you can do better. It’s an eye catching pattern so it depends on whether you want attention to be drawn to your body as a result.
  • kimono dress, I feel similarly to previous dress. But this one looks like a dressing gown in shape. Kinda reminds me of “bikini cover up on holiday” vibe too.

Yes, I loved the pink on you!! It’s girly, feminine and suits the vibe of a hen. I think black is too safe and a bit boring, and also washes you out. Glad we were able to help shortlist somewhat!

DailyEnergyCrisis · 16/08/2025 10:15

Green kimono or black v neck (think it’s a jumpsuit), you look so well proportioned and both show your defined waist.

MKDex · 16/08/2025 11:38

You're going to look beautiful whatever you wear. But im still voting for the kimono!

I’ve gone for the kimono in the end. Think it most suits the weather/ occasion.

I haven’t got to go out for 1/2hr so might just run an iron over the bottom 😂

The short black spotty one felt really great but as I looked in the mirror it seemed a bit unbalanced and the top half was a bit big.

If I had your legs, especially your ankles, I'd be showing them at every available opportunity.
Separate co-ords would be ideal as you're smaller on top, but they all look fit for the beach rather than a wedding.

It’s not a wedding. It’s actually a 40th birthday party, but the day/ night is organised more like a traditional hen do.
