I paid the hairdresser, but my hair looks terrible. My after pictures look like before pictures

I used a hairdresser I have not used before. I had half head foil highlights and said I didn't want a bright blonde as I was happy with my existing colour, I just wanted enough to blend/disguise my grey roots. The hairdresser put the foils on then straight after she did the last foil, she took me to the sink to rinse. Usually, I would have the foils on to process a while before rinsing so I did think this was unusual. The toner was left to process while she cut another clients hair, I don't know how long though. I have attached pictures of my results. I don't have time to go back to have this corrected before my holiday, and I'm not sure if I would trust her anyway. I paid £130, I've never spent that much on my hair before but saved up to have my hair done especially for my graduation. I have paid a lot of money to look so terrible, I even want to cancel the photographer for my graduation because I'm so embarrassed and upset with how I look. Would I be reasonable to request a refund?

As a hairdresser this is a terrible excuse for highlights. It’s not even at the root? As you’re 100% grey I’d always suggest a tint too but even so the highlights are not good enough

newfriend05 · 23/07/2025 15:43

Go back OP and show them , what you have shown us .. I’d be fluming . Let us know what they say

Hairdresser here - your after pics look worse than the before ones, absolutely go back in and request a refund or at the very least a redo by a more experienced stylist. I don’t normally bash other stylists work but im shocked they let you leave with that.

ReluctantBikini · 23/07/2025 15:57

Yes, she's done an awful job.

I agree with other posters in that you have a lovely colour grey. Mine is about 50% grey in top and my hairdresser has stopped going in for the yellow type blonde and I have more of an ash blonde which makes a big difference. It looks far better, more natural and I go longer between appointments.

istheresomethingishouldsay · 23/07/2025 15:57

Absolutely go in in person and demand a refund. That is incredibly poor; she clearly had no idea what she was doing

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 23/07/2025 16:06

Can people stop with telling the OP to embrace the grey (and variations on that theme)?! That is not what she wanted advice on for goodness sake.
I think it's very odd that the hairdresser removed your foils so quickly. It almost looks as if she forgot to add a chemical or something (it's been a long time since I was training to be a hairdresser, so I don't know if processes have changed in the intervening years!)
Honestly, this doesn't look as if she's even done anything -it's shocking that she thought this was acceptable and you definitely should ask for it either to be redone or for a refund.

pushthebuttonnn · 23/07/2025 16:11

Wow that's so bad, she didn't get anywhere near the roots
I would definitely be going back and asking to speak to the Manager. I would expect that another hairdresser will fix it under the Manager's watchful eye. If they refuse id leave a review. They won't want a bad rep.

charlielpage123 · 23/07/2025 16:15

Hello

I am a hairdresser and I can’t believe anybody would let you walk out like this, as much as foils don’t actually touch the scalp the highlights should of covered some of the roots and you should be able to see where the foils were placed by the lines of blonde but there is no visible indication of having any highlights at all.

I think you should one hundred percent go back into salon in person and just politely state that you’re unhappy. See if you can speak to a manager and I’m sure a different stylist could rectify it for you. Don’t be shy salons are used to redos.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 23/07/2025 16:26

I'm 100% with those pushing transitioning to grey, which is what I'm doing at the moment. But I think OP's point is more that she's paid a lot of money for a shit job and I think that's right. Your hair doesn't look dreadful, OP - your roots won't show up that much against the blonde, luckily, though I understand that you can see them yourself. But if you're looking at them closely as we are, they clearly have not been dyed, which is unsurprising given that she took the foils off as soon as she'd done the last one. Grey hair is coarse and it's harder to dye (as my hairdresser never tires of telling me). I would definitely go in and ask for a refund.

Praying4Peace · 23/07/2025 16:36

Enjoy your much deserved graduation OP and press. present your photos to. You HD for a refund

Spindrifts · 23/07/2025 16:44

Could you get a really nice long hair blow dry for the day? Go to a reputable salon in your town centre.

I'm not 100% grey, I never look this grey. I am wondering if my roots were over toned, or something else went wrong on top. I don't know what has gone wrong but it looks terrible. I usually have 2 colours with my regular hairdresser (shes not available unfortunately) I did ask for a blonde and a darker colour when I had the consultation but the extra charge for the second colour seemed excessive.

In that case something has definitely gone wrong! Ring up first so you don’t feel as awkward going back in.

Isobel201 · 23/07/2025 16:59

nah that looks awful, I get highlights done once a year, and the foils are always left on to 'bake' for a while.

AngelicKaty · 23/07/2025 16:59

@Whiskers148 OP, are you naturally grey? This is what other PPs seem to be inferring from your post, but I've read it that you were happy with your honey blonde colour and just wanted your 1/4 head highlights (roots) the same colour, but the hairdresser has done them bright/white blonde, instead of honey, which has given the impression of you having grey hair growing out. Have I got this right?
I would definitely go back - quickly - and ask for a refund, quoting the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which states that services must be carried out with "reasonable care and skill" (which they clearly haven't been!).
Could you buy a toner in a warmer blonde and just apply it to the roots? (You could do a patch test on a few roots lower down your crown, that wouldn't be visible when your hair's styled, to see how it looks before doing all your 1/4 head roots.)

Zov · 23/07/2025 16:59

That legitimately looks bloody awful @Whiskers148 You need to request a refund. Also though, as has been said, the condition of your hair looks pretty bad anyway. I think you've been colouring and bleaching it too much, and it's taken its toll on your hair quite a lot.

You need to go to a decent hairdresser, and have a really good cut (maybe to a couple of inches below your earlobes, to get rid of as much of the damaged hair as you can.)

I don't have time unfortunately, I'm working until my graduation day then leaving that night for holiday. I'm a solo parent so I can't do a late appointment with another salon. I'll try to fix with box, I don't have the funds to pay for anything more right now

What a shame. I'd go in with the Before photo and ask for a refund. At least you can spend the money on something else.
Your grey is a really nice colour, BTW.

At least I'm not being overly critical. I can't go back unfortunately, I don't have any spare time to do so before my graduation, then I will be going on holiday straight after. I looked at the reviews this morning and there are so many bad ones. I'm a fool for not checking sooner. She owns the salon, she is very blunt and unapproachable, I think that the only other person there is her relative and she has even worse reviews.

Book it for after your return. Sun and water ruin hair anyway my hairdresser said so I have it done on my return

The salon owner might blame the chlorine and sun though!

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 23/07/2025 17:27

Not going to solve your problem but colour wow root cover washes out after each use and might give you a bit more confidence for your pictures.

Jdh172 · 23/07/2025 17:34

Yikes, yes your hair looked better before! The dye hasn't taken at all! You should definitely ask for a refund!

Pinkissmart · 23/07/2025 17:39

Get a refund and don't cancel the photographer.

There's no shame in having grey hair!!
