I paid the hairdresser, but my hair looks terrible. My after pictures look like before pictures

I used a hairdresser I have not used before. I had half head foil highlights and said I didn't want a bright blonde as I was happy with my existing colour, I just wanted enough to blend/disguise my grey roots. The hairdresser put the foils on then straight after she did the last foil, she took me to the sink to rinse. Usually, I would have the foils on to process a while before rinsing so I did think this was unusual. The toner was left to process while she cut another clients hair, I don't know how long though. I have attached pictures of my results. I don't have time to go back to have this corrected before my holiday, and I'm not sure if I would trust her anyway. I paid £130, I've never spent that much on my hair before but saved up to have my hair done especially for my graduation. I have paid a lot of money to look so terrible, I even want to cancel the photographer for my graduation because I'm so embarrassed and upset with how I look. Would I be reasonable to request a refund?

I also have highlights to blend/cover grey. I also have a root tint for the remaining hair and the colour is left on (roots and highlights) for half an hour at least. I've had this done with several hairdressers and they all do it the same way, so I'm not sure why yours wasn't left on for a while. Whilst it probably would have been better to say at the time if you weren't happy, could you go back and show them that the highlights haven't worked and you would like to discuss a refund? I think you'd be well within your rights to ask.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/07/2025 12:11

Go and get a refund. I did a year ago, a junior stylist made me look like the bride of dracula. I was NOT happy. I got a full refund.
It's better to go in person becsuse they won't make a fuss in front of other customers.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/07/2025 12:13

Frankenstein not dracula. I'd probably wear a fabric wide hairband or a hat. Don't let it ruin your day.

DiscoBob · 23/07/2025 12:16

Why didn't she do the roots? Yeah it looks awful.
Tell her she must redo the roots and the colour looks a bit too orange also.

SaywhatIthink · 23/07/2025 12:18

Have you thought of letting your hair just go natural.
It dont look very healthy and with all the heat and dyes in it over the years as made it look worn out.
It also looks as if its lost its volume and very thin at thw front receding hair line and patches.
Not having a dig just saying from my own experience.
I had the same problem.
No matter where i went how much i paid it just looked awful.
So in the end i shaved my head bald and let it grow back naturally no heat no dyes nothing.
2 year on my hair is healthier i have salt and pepper natural corkscrew curls my hair is full volume i have thick hair but it looks really good.
My skulp has healed.
And my receding hair line is now gone.

That’s so weird! Definitely grounds for a refund, I’m surprised she didn’t look suitably abashed when she saw it at the end. I’ve never had colour taken off almost instantly like that, surely it wouldn’t even have had a chance to take on the most recent foils? Interested for hairdressers to explain what the reasoning behind it might be as I am definitely not knowledgeable about stuff like this!

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 23/07/2025 12:19

God, no, I wouldn't have been paying for this.

Ooothatsagoodone · 23/07/2025 12:45

Honestly did she forget to put any colour on at all?

notimeforregrets · 23/07/2025 12:48

Unfortunately you are right, your hair looked better before the hairdresser.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/07/2025 12:58

I let mine go natural too. It's much better. If I didn't have to go to work I'd shave it all off and start again too.

Northernladdette · 23/07/2025 15:04

Why didn’t you say something at the time?

RaychyR · 23/07/2025 15:06

Sadly not much help in the short term but id find a colourist who specialises in grey transitioning. Ive seen some lovely transformations when people have embraced the grey. Your natural grey is a nice tone, lots of silvery white, id embrace it

caramac04 · 23/07/2025 15:09

That is completely unacceptable and I would be asking /demanding a refund. Most salons will accommodate this but if not I’d be all over their social media.
I’m sorry your hair hasn’t been coloured professionally.

My hairdresser was wonderful. I had balayage for a couple of years as the grey grew out.

LushLemonTart · 23/07/2025 15:16

Definitely contact the salon. Is your colourist the owner? Contact the owner if not.

I was a colourist for years and no way would I have let you leave the salon like. Shocking.

Ivy888 · 23/07/2025 15:17

I’m really sorry to write this, but your hair was much nicer on the 1 week before appointment photo. You really need to go back (in person) and show them the photos as proof. This is a botch job.

She definitely doesn’t have a receding hairline. Ignore OP. She should have covered the greys, it’s unacceptable to have let you leave like this.

Agree, I was admiring the roots in the photo more than anything. That’s a really nice grey!

Masonjarcandle · 23/07/2025 15:30

Sorry this has been such a stressful experience for you OP.
Hairdresser here, and this is really bad. Colour doesn't work by magic so I'm completely baffled by her applying and then immediately rinsing. I can only think she's new/inexperienced and poorly managing her time. Taken longer to place the highlights than expected and then panicked and rinsed to try stay on time?
My apprentices would do a better job than this, I would 100% be asking for a refund.

Blodyneighbour · 23/07/2025 15:35

She's done an awful job. She should not have rinsed it off until it was processed. Did she just have a brain fog moment or something?. I'm a hairdresser and no way do you rinse before the required time. Usually the peroxide strength would be lower at the Base and higher on the top so it all takes evenly.
I would go back and get it corrected. And she should do it before you go away.
That's alot of money for a poor job.

BunnyLake · 23/07/2025 15:36

Your natural hair looks like it could be lovely. Grey/silver hair can look gorgeous.

MissyB1 · 23/07/2025 15:38

Please go back and ask for a refund, let us know hope you get on.

Overthebow · 23/07/2025 15:40

Yes sorry op but it doesn’t look good, it was much better in the before photo. Get a refund.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 23/07/2025 15:42

The overall job doesn’t look good. However, for full root coverage I would always book a root touchup as well, as foils just don’t reach the root, they have to stop a little bit short, even with a very good hairdresser.

Good luck getting it sorted out, OP.

cha04 · 23/07/2025 15:42

As a hairdresser this is a terrible excuse for highlights. It’s not even at the root? As you’re 100% grey I’d always suggest a tint too but even so the highlights are not good enough
