I paid the hairdresser, but my hair looks terrible. My after pictures look like before pictures

I used a hairdresser I have not used before. I had half head foil highlights and said I didn't want a bright blonde as I was happy with my existing colour, I just wanted enough to blend/disguise my grey roots. The hairdresser put the foils on then straight after she did the last foil, she took me to the sink to rinse. Usually, I would have the foils on to process a while before rinsing so I did think this was unusual. The toner was left to process while she cut another clients hair, I don't know how long though. I have attached pictures of my results. I don't have time to go back to have this corrected before my holiday, and I'm not sure if I would trust her anyway. I paid £130, I've never spent that much on my hair before but saved up to have my hair done especially for my graduation. I have paid a lot of money to look so terrible, I even want to cancel the photographer for my graduation because I'm so embarrassed and upset with how I look. Would I be reasonable to request a refund?

Honestly did she forget to put any colour on at all?

This.

Doesn’t look like she’s cut the ends either, it’s fluffy with lots of split ends.
Looks like you’d expect before an appointment.

Defo get a refund OP.

Acheyelbows · 23/07/2025 17:45

Use one of the root sprays for your graduation and get your photos. Will you be wearing a hat and gown?

A fabric hair band or wide brimmed hat might work for holidays.
Did any of the reviews mention they were refunded?

ReadingTime · 23/07/2025 17:46

A box dye will cover the roots well enough for graduation photos, don't worry.

Or if you don't want to put more chemicals on it so soon, you could try this root powder which should look good enough for photos. https://www.lookfantastic.com/p/color-wow-root-cover-up-1.9g-various-shades/12905359/

It does look like you've got to the point with the grey where highlights aren't enough to disguise them any more and you might be better off embracing the silver. Have a look at Jack Martin on instagram for inspiration.

This happened to me once when I took an appointment with a different hairdresser in my usual salon because mine wasn’t available. I paid, went home and realised it was awful. I phoned and was initially told that they would redo it but it would need to be the same hairdresser but when I got there my usual hairdresser did it. I think the other one was quite embarrassed. It did make things a bit awkward for the future but if it’s not your usual hairdresser you don’t have to see her again.

Whatoflife · 23/07/2025 18:19

I don’t know if anyone has suggested the root touch up sprays from Superdrug etc. it may tide you over.

Definitely justifies a full refund!

PearlsMaybe · 23/07/2025 18:39

Maybe you could ask on local social media to see if there is a hairdresser who could come to your house? I have that and it's great.

The salon owner might blame the chlorine and sun though!

I don’t think they mean returning to the same one!

Frostynoman · 23/07/2025 19:01

Email her. You need to approach her. At leas tif you do email with the pictures you can then try a charge back if they refuse to refund

Glowingup · 23/07/2025 19:06

Poor you OP, please email the salon with these pictures. It looks terrible, sorry.
And all the comments to grow out your greys - not everyone wants to do that. It doesn’t always look good and is very ageing so not all women would want to take that option.

Muffinmam · 23/07/2025 19:09

I have had many hair disasters that I’ve paid a lot of money for. I’m blonde. I’ve gone in for blonde foils and come out with lowlights which were almost black. I’ve gone in for highlights and come out with bright orange hair. I’ve had blonde to my roots which turned bright yellow and no amount of toning was going to make it better.

I’ve also had scalp burns and all of my hair has fallen out.

The last time I had a bad hair colour I just broke down crying at reception it was so upsetting. It was awful. It was orange and patchy. I found a new hair place and the first time was great, the second time not so great.

I think sometimes the hairdressers are incompetent and other times they do it on purpose. It took me a decade to
grow out my layers because every time I went in the hairdressers would cut layers into my hair and give me a shag around my face. Now I just ask for a blunt cut because I can’t trust them not to hack layers into my hair.

Go back to the salon. You need highlights and a root tint.

Zanatdy · 23/07/2025 19:17

That’s really bad. I’d ask for a refund. Graduation photos, at least you’ll be wearing a cap!

Nikki75 · 23/07/2025 19:19

3days ... you need to go back full refund seriously don't let that this go.

Whiskers148 · 23/07/2025 20:37

Northernladdette · 23/07/2025 15:04

Why didn’t you say something at the time?

I didn't notice until I got back to my car and could see it close up. When she did the mirror she only showed me the ends. It wasn't until a day or two after that I properly noticed how bad it was

Have you thought of letting your hair just go natural.
It dont look very healthy and with all the heat and dyes in it over the years as made it look worn out.
It also looks as if its lost its volume and very thin at thw front receding hair line and patches.
Not having a dig just saying from my own experience.
I had the same problem.
No matter where i went how much i paid it just looked awful.
So in the end i shaved my head bald and let it grow back naturally no heat no dyes nothing.
2 year on my hair is healthier i have salt and pepper natural corkscrew curls my hair is full volume i have thick hair but it looks really good.
My skulp has healed.
And my receding hair line is now gone.

With perimenopause, uni stress, losing my mum and grandma, solo parenting and general poor health over the past 18 months, my hair has suffered. It has fallen out lots, the texture has changed and generally it just looks bleh. I don't use heat on it and have never used bleach on it but it's still not good. I don't want to go natural, I'm not ready for that just yet. Just want to have a warm honey blonde for now

God, no, I wouldn't have been paying for this.

I already paid upfront through Treatwell 😣

Not using heat on it will actually make it way way worse and more damaged - watch some of the Blowout Professors videos on YouTube and you’ll see how this myth about heat causing damage means a lot of people damage their hair by leaving to dry naturally etc amd especially when its coloured it is even worse

Oh don't even get me started on the cut. It's wonky and some bits have been missed completely. She literally took 2 minutes to cut my hair. Just snipped straight round like she was trimming a pompom.

How did you pay through Treatwell OP? (If you used a credit card you'll have section 75 protection and can claim your money back from your CC issuer if the salon muck you about.)

MyCoralHedgehog · 24/07/2025 07:08

Go to Boots or a supermarket and buy a box dye. Olia is good and gentle. It will look much better

Morgenrot25 · 24/07/2025 07:11

Sorry @Whiskers148, but you're right, it doesn't look great. I'd ask for a refund and also leave a review that reflects your honest experience.

sandwichlover93 · 24/07/2025 08:00

As an aside, you won’t see your hair with your graduation hat on.

I'm not 100% grey, I never look this grey. I am wondering if my roots were over toned, or something else went wrong on top. I don't know what has gone wrong but it looks terrible. I usually have 2 colours with my regular hairdresser (shes not available unfortunately) I did ask for a blonde and a darker colour when I had the consultation but the extra charge for the second colour seemed excessive.

What do you mean by a second colour? Do you mean the tint? You chose not to have it ?

I am so tempted to do this too! Stylists warned me I would go all salt n peppery if I didn't have it coloured so I was caught in a trap of constant colouring. For years I had salon foils and when that became impossible (Covid and then lack of spare cash) I coloured it myself. I think it looks nice but only if I try not to look at it too closely under salon lights! Thankfully the lighting at home is subdued.. everyone should try it!

AmberHoney · 24/07/2025 10:17

I’ve started colouring my hair at home after never being happy with the hairdressers result and then having to pay a ridiculous amount for it.
Loreal Excellence hair colours are great if you don’t mind colouring at home. Looking at your photos I would opt for a colour above a number 9.
The numbers on the box 1 to 10 indicate 1 as the darkest, usually black, up to around 12 being lightest blonde. They’re usually around 2 for £13 in Boots and the results are not bad. Greys take longer to colour and always use a moisturising conditioner. I’ve been there it’s not nice, hope this helps😊
