Are these shoes back in fashion?

I’m seeing loads of people wearing them but they still look like old people’s shoes to me! They look super comfy though so may invest in a pair.

I love Birkenstocks. The cork bed moulds to your feet once they been worn in. I find them very comfortable and they provide good arch support which really helps as I have fallen arches. A decent pair (not look a likes) should last a good few years too.

Mumgamer · 04/07/2025 19:43

I have several from primark. Black, white, tan, orange, and silver! Love them!

Aethelthryth · 04/07/2025 19:44

they make me look like a nun

evtheria · 04/07/2025 19:50

I’ve seen a lot more younger women wearing them for the last couple of year, BUT I believe the ‘hot item’ right now is flip flops. Specifically ones with a chunkier sole, and a wide, fabric toe strap - see The Row - or the ones with a toe strap that looks like jelly.

Crushed23 · 04/07/2025 20:14

They never went out of fashion? I’ve been wearing them for 10 years, since I was 25. ‘Old people’ fashion is great: comfortable, casual, long lasting. What’s not to love?!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 04/07/2025 04:55

I would love to be able to wear them
nit the foot bed tray or whatever it’s called doesn’t fit my stupid toes.

Me too ! Long 2nd and 3rd toes.

Never understood the appeal personally. They're very overpriced, for a start.
I've got some Clarks sandals which have lasted me years and years, and they were way cheaper.

Wouldn’t they have been cheaper because you bought them years ago?😂

faffadoodledo · 04/07/2025 20:27

someone will have to prise my Birkies from my cold dead feet (if I die in summertime). Omg they’re so comfy.

Skissors · 04/07/2025 20:30

Wearing birkies right now. The cross over at big toe ones.

Don't think they'll ever be 'out'

They're perennial

I live in mine.

FlowersFawb · 04/07/2025 21:10

I have a lovely white leather pair and I'm 35 ... I don't think they've ever been out of fashion tbh.

Those are the shoes of old men and maths teachers

And cool surfers round here….

boobashka · 04/07/2025 22:08

I have that exact same pair @GirlPolo and have been wearing them all week on holiday in Cornwall... great for walks clambering along the coast, easy to slip on and off when going to the beach. Love them! Probably not the most flattering things to be perfectly honest but I'm nearly 50 and comfort wins! I'm not particularly trendy but my v fashionable sis in law donated them to me last year so they must be OK 😁

It’s a class thing - the middle class have worn them for years. The Botox & painted eyebrows folk don’t. The sad tattoo folk usually don’t wear them either.
If you are buying them, don’t buy imitation. They will last for ever and a decent cobbler can repair them. Enjoy x

Sad tattoo folk? What on earth is that supposed to mean?

StMarie4me · 04/07/2025 22:14

Showing my age but when I was a youngster they were an indication of being a gay woman. Like carabiners nowadays. I’ve just never been able to get on with shoes with a foot bed!

Methinks @Kiltis just a TAD judgy.

WorriedRelative · 04/07/2025 22:15

Old people shoes 🤔

Maybe they are, I bought my first pair in about 2003 at the time Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, SJP and various other fashion figures were seen in them. I bought them for fashion, haven't stopped wearing them as they are SO bloody comfy.

Denimrules · 04/07/2025 22:17

Those have never been old peoples shoes. They are not even shoes. They are sandals or mules. Footbed tripe shoes have been surfer and hot climate footwear forever. If seen with socks the look stems from the Germanic/Scandinavian tradition not older people or the 1970s.

They have been on trend in recent years in the UK

YourWinter · 04/07/2025 22:26

Have Birks ever NOT been ipopular?

Look on Vinted.

Noononoo · 04/07/2025 22:34

I have five pairs..live in them.

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 04/07/2025 22:37

Birkenstocks cured my plantar fasciitis. I have a few different styles including boots for the winter.
I don’t wear them for fashion.

Lovemeapickledgherkin · 04/07/2025 22:56

TheCurious0range · 03/07/2025 10:39

People wear Birkenstocks all the time they are devoted to them I don't think they ever went away (I find them hugely uncomfortable)

Fat Face version soooo much more comfortable. Especially the suede ones. I have 4 pairs now….

Noshadelamp · 04/07/2025 23:09

They becsme more popular in 2023 with the Barbie movie.

They look great on you op.

notnorman · 04/07/2025 23:13

I’ve bought a new pair of gizeh every year for last 18 years

spoonbillstretford · 04/07/2025 23:16

I've got a FitFlop version so probably even more like old people's shoes. Birkenstocks are too flat for me. They are as close to wearing trainers as I can get in sandal form and they are the only sandals which were comfortable when I had plantar fasciitis eight years ago. Also they seem to be indestructible.
