Are these shoes back in fashion?

I’m seeing loads of people wearing them but they still look like old people’s shoes to me! They look super comfy though so may invest in a pair.

Birkenstocks are Evergreen
I was over the moon to find Tokio style which has a closed toe and heel strap so I can keep them on( CP)
Felt like Christmas so I bought both black and off white
There are devotees of Brkies just like VW Campers!

I did most of Glastonbury this year in my Birkenstock Arizonas. 40k steps per day, and they were so comfy. My only complaint is that the soles wear down fast, though I do walk loads. But you can't get them replaced in the UK.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 04/07/2025 08:33

Long time fan, here. Lately I can still wear the Bostons all day, but find the arizonas a bit of a challenge and have that toe gripping thing going on. However, recently found the Kyoto style which is like an updated Zurich and after a bit of wearing in these are my new favourite summer style.

NoMoreHotHols · 04/07/2025 08:53

I call these slippers and only wear them indoors.

Britneyfan · 04/07/2025 08:58

I have worn exclusively these in summertime for over a decade since I started to struggle with plantar fasciitis. They are soooooo comfortable and I don’t have plantar fasciitis pain as long as I stick to them. I’ve got used to how they look, I would prefer a higher fashion look however being able to walk is the most important thing! And I love the colours and especially the new types made of EVA foam which are even comfier and lighter to wear. I initially struggled with the toe gripping thing too but a combination of wearing them in/getting used to them and going down a half size when the half sizes came in have helped with this hugely and I don’t get it anymore. So if people are feeling they have to grip with their toes try wearing a half size down maybe.

HunnyPot · 04/07/2025 09:07

They have never been in fashion so they can’t come back.

I find them desperately uncomfortable. My Dh bought me a pair when I had a nasty blister on a weekend away. Bliss because they didn’t rub my heel but it felt like the bumps inside were in all the wrong places. Do you need to wear them in? Don’t think I’ve had them back on except the one day!

I found mine uncomfortable to start with but once you have worn them for a while they fit like a glove, love mine , I’ve got 2 pairs. Live in them when it’s dry weather. I’m in my late 40’s and dd in her early 20s has a pair too.

i don’t think they have ever gone out of fashion,

Very expensive slippers! 😂

Those are the shoes of old men and maths teachers

It was my Irish teacher (Irish language) who wore them back in the 80's, he also wore green cords, baggy aran jumpers and carried an ancient leather satchel, had long curly hair but was balding at the same time. He was a walking talking stereotype and we all thought he was such an old hippy, he was a great teacher and a nice guy who looking back was probably only in his 30's but seems so old to us teenagers. He cycled to school and the students regularly hid his bike, as an adult I realise he often left his bike available for the students to do this as it built a great relationship with lots of fun between teacher and students. I don't wear Birkenstocks but they take me straight back to secondary school in the 80's.

CapaciousHag · 04/07/2025 11:26

Your teacher’s style sounds impeccable @Mudflaps. Grin

dollyblue01 · 04/07/2025 11:27

I’ve just bought two new pairs and they are so versatile and comfy you won’t regret getting them.

Got them!

Very nice

MoominUnderWater · 04/07/2025 11:30

I got some on Temu for £10. I have some proper single strap Birkenstocks as well and can't tell the difference in foot bed, comfort or quality.

soupmaker · 04/07/2025 11:33

I’ve been wearing them for almost 30 years. They are so damn comfortable and I can walk for hours in them. (Apart from my latest pair which have rubbed the top of my foot after getting wet, grrr). I usually get 3 years out of a pair, then the sole is to worn and the cork warped. I’ve had multiple Madrids, Gizehs, a pair of Floridas but my favourite for long walks is Arizonas.

DiscoBob · 04/07/2025 11:42

I love them. Always wear in summer and have done since about 2002. I find them really comfortable. Lots of dedent dupes available too.

MorrisZapp · 04/07/2025 11:43

Yes they have been in fashion! I remember very well two or three summers in the mid noughties when pink or white Madrids worn with knee length denim skirts were all the flippin rage. I bought mine in Costco, and loads of fashion shops whipped out copies.

They looked like they'd fall off your feet but they didn't. The only thing you couldn't do in them was run for a bus 😊

ThePoshUns · 04/07/2025 12:01

Crikey I’ve been wearing Birkenstocks for the last 10 years or so, they are pretty ubiquitous. Glad you’ve finally discovered them OP!

ginasevern · 04/07/2025 12:03

That style has always been available and I've not thought of them as particularly "old people's shoes" although maybe not for teenagers. But they have had quite a resurgence recently. They are indeed everywhere.

Cattery · 04/07/2025 12:04

I fancy a pair in white but I’m 63 and I think they may make me look 73..?

WorriedRelative · 04/07/2025 12:10

Utterlyconfusednow · 03/07/2025 19:36

Are they comfortable longish walks?

YES!

I don't have arizonas, I have Madrid, Mayari and have had Gizeh in the past. All comfy, I have walked serious distances in them, in excess of 30,000 steps on cobbled streets and rough ground in temperatures in excess of 40°C. They have taken me up and down numerous long flights of spiral steps too.

I would never go on holiday without a pair again. I have done a couple of times and I regretted it.

ThursdayWaitingForChocolate · 04/07/2025 12:12

They’ll never have me!

I hate sandals in general, but these are just on another level!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 04/07/2025 12:14

I don't think they are particularly fashionable. They might be comfortable but they do look ugly.

CapaciousHag · 04/07/2025 12:24

I’ve had many pairs of Birkenstocks in the past, and do sometimes browse the site out of curiosity now, but in general I despise sandals more and more the older I get!

I only want to wear clumpy boots, all year round. For a few days a year I reluctantly swap to some sort of flat shoe or mule. It doesn’t help that I cannot stand trainers, despite their lightness and convenience. If I can’t polish it, it’s not worth having.
