Well style mavens, that last thread went quickly! Let's hope we get more royal fashion to analyse. I think we need some tiara action, though.

I think kilts can be a bit tricky - for everyone that wants to see the royals in kilts there is at least one Scot who hates it and see it as almost cultural appropriation. I don't think we will be seeing William in one any time soon.

Yes I get that, and it's fair enough really.

gingercat02 · 01/07/2025 14:05

Thank you @Maireas
For those who want William in a kilt, my Scottish DH is v against non Scots wearing kilts. Not sure if that is how others feel.

Sidebeforeself · 01/07/2025 14:09

If I see William in a kilt AND with a beard I think I may come over all unnecessary…

Sidebeforeself · 01/07/2025 14:10

Sorry, in my flustered state I forgot to say thanks @Maireas !

Is there a tartan the Bowes Lyon's can wear? Or are they not Scottish enough?

Yes that was my thinking too. William's great grandmother was Scottish after all...and QEII obviously loved it there, most likely having been greatly influenced by her mother. In which case I don't see why they can't wear the Scottish garb.

But some people probably don't consider them Scottish enough. I'm not aware enough about the origins of the Bowes Lyon family branch nor the particulars of the politics around it and I've not got the blood links to hold a strong opinion either way.

But on aesthetics only I think William could pull it off nicely.

Magpiecomplex · 01/07/2025 14:37

Apologies for jumping in, and further apologies if this has already been said. As an occasional lurker, and knowing how dedicated you are to tiaras, I can recommend the Cartier exhibition at the V&A. They have a room full of tiaras!

RitaIncognita · 01/07/2025 14:44

Traditionally, the RF wears the Stewart tartan, so William could go for that. He is descended from quite a few Stewart/Stuarts, including Charles II through Diana.

WorkingRoyalNotTwerkingRoyal · 01/07/2025 14:51

Speaking of Scotland, C&C are there this week aren't they?

I've just read that the Royal Train is to be decommissioned in 2027. It's a shame in one sense of course but I do think it's the right decision. Hopefully it will permanently on exhibition.

justasking111 · 01/07/2025 14:55

My great grandfather was a McKinnon descendants of royalty Mull and Skye. Nice pattern I'd be proud to wear it.

Through an accident of genetics my blood is Scottish Irish and French. I wonder if there's a French tartan. 😂

WorkingRoyalNotTwerkingRoyal · 01/07/2025 14:58

Thank you @Magpiecomplex I don't mind repeated mentions because I get all giddy with excitement every time I think about all those treasures in one space together. I'm doing my best to engineer a visit later in the year!

William could at least try tartan trews if not total kilt. Louis would be excellent in full on kilt.

gingercat02 · 01/07/2025 17:01

@eggandonion Tarten trews are a crime against fashion. One of my best friends dad (all Scottish family) didn't want to wear a kilt at her wedding, all her other relatives did. He delightedly got himself trews made in the family tartan. She cried when he put them on (not in a good way 😭)

Maireas · 01/07/2025 17:03

Do we think all this discussion calls for a picture of Major Johnny in a kilt 🤔?

Would be rude not to @Maireas! 😉🤣

Cassiope · 01/07/2025 17:22

@GetDressedYouMerryGentlemen , @WorkingRoyalNotTwerkingRoyal

I think that as Duke of Cornwall, William would be entitled to wear the Cornish national tartan.* A friend of mine from graduate student days who was a proud Cornishman always wore his Cornish kilt to black- and white-tie dinners.

*Can't do pictures without faffing with my security settings, sorry.

👋🏻

eggandonion · 01/07/2025 17:24

I wonder if William could be persuaded into the trews as a gateway to a kilt? They need to have the plaid very well matched at the seams.
