Classic Denim Jacket - Any Way to Look Current in It?

CeRaVie · 30/05/2025 17:21

The shops are still selling them and plenty of people still loving them with a midi/maxi dress. It’s easy.

My jacket has sentimental value, so I am keeping it but I just feel so naff wearing it. Is there any way to wear it and still look stylish? I know all about wear what you like, but I am not sure I do like to wear it 10 year after buying it.

I never wear it with a dress. I wear a longer length one with jeans or smart trousers, a shirt or teashirt, belt and some loafers.

JadedFilly · 30/05/2025 17:57

Well, Net-a-Porter seems to feel it’s all about double denim right now. Lots of inspiration here:

@JadedFilly thank you, this confirms my feeling - none of these look like my Mumsy jacket.

I don’t think it’s about the actual jacket - more in what you wear it with. Did you click on some of those shown to see the styling? (Usually second photo.)

CapitalAtRisk · 30/05/2025 18:41

Nope, sorry OP.

Please don't tell me you wear it with a loose-fitting flowery midaxi dress, white trainers and a cross-body bag?

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/05/2025 18:48

Keep it but store it for the moment. Its time will come round again and you’ll be glad you still have it but at the moment it’s all about cropped / oversized or chore (longer length) jackets.

CeRaVie · 30/05/2025 19:39

@CapitalAtRisk No, I don’t and it makes me sad. I loved that look. And I miss pencil dresses in beautiful colours and platform stripper heels for office wear.

What’s wrong with that?

That’s what I usually wear, the denim jacket I have is pink though, not the usual blue.

I feel good in my dresses!

Hdpr · 30/05/2025 19:42

Nope sorry, hate denim jackets and dresses, feels middle aged and I’m middle aged

Oh the horror. Imagine wearing perfectly nice, attractive and comfortable clothes that you already own, instead of gormlessly buying new clothes because people who are paid to flog you new ones have told you that you must.

What's wrong with feeling (or being) middle aged? Be specific.

Imagine that. You do you, and those of us who find fashion fun and stimulating will do us.

CapitalAtRisk · 30/05/2025 19:55

Where do you think our old clothes go? That's right, they go to charity, Ebay or Vinted. Without people changing their wardrobes, there would be no charity shop etc clothes for all the clever "circular economy" people to preach about buying.

I don't buy fast fashion. But after about three years of wearing something, I get sick to death of it and am ready for a change.

You want to keep wearing your comfortable slacks? Crack on!

Overtheatlantic · 30/05/2025 19:59

A few days ago I walked by a woman wearing a nice floral dress, denim jacket, and white trainers, and before I realised it I thought how nice she looked. I’m middle aged and proud.

TheLongRider · 30/05/2025 20:00

Do you have a picture of the jacket? Is it cropped or drop sleeve?. Rather than a dress try it with separates such as a more modern skirt or flared or wide leg jeans. Think about layering it with hoodies. Roll the sleeves, pin brooches all over it. There are multiple ways of styling a denim jacket. Get creative. Otherwise leave it in your wardrobe unworn...

NicolaCasanova · 30/05/2025 20:01

Personally I think they are awful and could only imagine cutting off the sleeves, bleaching the denim and putting it on a young man who looks like Pedro Pascal for it to be ok.

But we don’t all have to agree!

Oh my god. I am you - especially the pencil dress and platformed heel! I still can’t figure out what to replace that with 🥲

Are we talking all those dresses inspired by Roland Mouret's original Galaxy dress? That is a great example of high fashion filtering down.

ResidentPorker · 30/05/2025 20:13

Being snide about people wearing something you consider dated doesn't sound "fun and stimulating".

We all buy far too many clothes and our poor planet is drowning under the weight of things that are chucked because they're deemed unfashionable.

I'm afraid I don't see buying new garments because I've been told I must a particularly desirable trait.

Well you better have a go at the OP as well then, because she said she felt naff wearing it.

It's a middle aged uniform. That's great, if you like a uniform. I like to look a little different.

ncforschoolhelp · 30/05/2025 20:28

@ResidentPorker please can we be friends? Thanks ☺️

ncforschoolhelp · 30/05/2025 20:31

@CapitalAtRisk what does looking a little "different" mean? Because I am
Picturing you in band t shirts and high top converse and midi skirts feeling oh so cool and I'm here to tell you..... no. Pop on a floral maxi, a nice pair of superga and a lovely 7/8 sleeve denim jacket and you'll feel all warm and fuzzy.

But also, honestly, let's just be comfy and feel good about ourselves.

DancingDucks · 30/05/2025 20:34

Snide isn't really a good trait for anyone, even if they do think they dress better than anyone else.

It’s ok not to want to look fashionable, just as it’s ok to want to look fashionable. Clothes can be an expression, a form of creativity. The OP asked what to wear to look fashionable and stylish, she doesn’t want the flowery dress and trainers look.

You don’t have to buy fast fashion. I like to take inspiration from fashion trends, and I haven’t bought new clothes in years. I sell items I don’t want anymore and use that money to buy secondhand ones I do. I have learnt to use a sewing machine so can change the shape of older clothes to give them a more current look.
