Classic Denim Jacket - Any Way to Look Current in It?

CeRaVie · 30/05/2025 17:21

The shops are still selling them and plenty of people still loving them with a midi/maxi dress. It’s easy.

My jacket has sentimental value, so I am keeping it but I just feel so naff wearing it. Is there any way to wear it and still look stylish? I know all about wear what you like, but I am not sure I do like to wear it 10 year after buying it.

Oh for goodness’ sake. I really cannot tell you what utter guff I’m reading here! Ohhhhh! Different races have their own sense of style!

Bloody hell. If you had any idea of the creative and profitable symbiosis between successful artists and grand designers brands (and I do …) you wouldn’t be wasting your time pontificating about how evil it is to glance at a huge multi brand online fashion store to get an idea of what’s new and popular.

I linked the Net a Porter site because they’re an obvious place to find loads of photos of current denim jacket outfits. I didn’t once say that the OK should throw out her wardrobe and buy a £500 jacket. Not once.

Honestly I despair of this board.

Your first post was really helpful because what the OP said was
Is there any way to wear it and still look stylish? I know all about wear what you like, but I am not sure I do like to wear it 10 year after buying it.

CapitalAtRisk's response could have been better framed and unfortunately set the thread off on the "denim jackets are classic" road
Please don't tell me you wear it with a loose-fitting flowery midaxi dress, white trainers and a cross-body bag?

The OP could try it with plain self coloured dresses and skirts or tailored trousers, or wide linen trousers or even double denim and loafers, pumps Mary Janes to give a different look.

And I think fuck off. HTH.

Ohh so it’s okay for you to describe someone else’s perfect outfit as “horrible” but you can’t take it when someone doesn’t like yours? Got it.

🙄🙄

I stand by hating both of those clichéd looks - the dress and trainers literally everyone in London was wearing in 2020; the band tee and converse thing just screams trying hard to be different (TO ME) but is actually not different at all. Alas, I’m sure you wouldn’t be seen dead in my clothes so I’m unsure why you’re offended. I literally said “horses for courses” - that’s the entire point!

This thread is like S&B bingo -
wear what you like
who cares about fashion (why are you on this board)
oh wait the OP who actually wanted advice
what about the planet (I do actually agree with this one to a point)
Supergas

Why are posters going on about this? No one has suggested this look. One poster decided it was what CapitalAtRisk was referring to as being "different". She's said it wasn't.

notacooldad · 01/06/2025 11:14

I thought a denim jacket was quite innocuous and not controversial in the slightest. How wrong i was!!! 😆

Jobsworth7 · 01/06/2025 11:24

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle It's because someone else said they wore it recently but with low top Converse and a denim jacket.

Anyway... My contribution is that denim jackets are really tricky. A bit like leather ones. I have a beautiful 10ish year old AllSaints leather jacket that I will probably always keep, but I can't make it (fitted, shortish, worn on my large chest) look right for the last couple of winters. The cropped denim ones show the same issue on me - they hang off the end of my 32FFs.

I've (sometimes) replaced the patterned midi look with plain fitted t shirt dresses and black Converse which looks ok with a denim jacket, actually. But overall pretty much ditched the dresses and gone to barrel leg trousers which is a whole other bitchy thread.

Well ignoring the diversion about band t-shirts the rest of your post actually usefully addresses what the OP was asking.

What do you mean "diversion"? I was answering your question!

I asked the question because I didn't understand why you and another poster were going on about band t- shirts.

What are you on about?! That was my first post!

RampantIvy · 01/06/2025 11:42

What is a self coloured dress?

I have a plain navy maxi dress. Is that the same thing?

Twelftytwo · 01/06/2025 11:44

CapitalAtRisk · 30/05/2025 18:41

Nope, sorry OP.

Please don't tell me you wear it with a loose-fitting flowery midaxi dress, white trainers and a cross-body bag?

Please don't tell me that you stop wearing stuff you like or look down on others because you're a sheep dedicated follower of fashion?

Oh fgs, calm down. You highlighted an irrelevant point, which had already been dismissed by the poster concerned as wrong.

CoastalCalm · 01/06/2025 11:48

I like them worn with some cropped chinos , boyfriend style is good - plain white T , denim jacket and a jaunty scarf or colourful necklace

Here you go. Someone responded and said they in fact did wear this combination, which sparked a few replies which is why people were, as you put it, "going on".

It's not really up to you whether it's irrelevant if people pick up on a post.

A solid block of colour. The denim jacket I liked on the Net a Porter link was worn with a longish, dark navy pleated dress. I thought it looked great- and I don't usually like denim jackets.

That is very similar in style to my navy maxi dress, except it is slightly gathered rather than pleated.

Also, I answered your question, you absolute jackass. I'm out.

manicpixieschemegirl · 01/06/2025 12:10

Well this thread was a wild ride…

I actually have a really similar denim jacket, OP and I still wear it when the mood takes me. It’s the most perfect colour and fit - I don’t do oversized because it makes me feel like the pigeon lady from Home Alone 2.

Recently, I wore it with a fuller skirted cotton maxi dress with mary jane flats, a wee silk neck tie and tortoiseshell Rayban dupe sunnies to go for a coffee. I also wore it with wide leg joggies, adidas spezials and the aforementioned sunnies to walk the dog. Both outfits felt like ‘me’ and at the grand old age of 34, I’ve realised this is the most important factor (for me) when it comes to clothes.

I keep up with what’s in (although admittedly Vogue is not my bedtime reading material) but I tend to pair newer current pieces with things I already own and love.

@Wiltingasparagusfern I have absolutely no idea what your meaning is, or why you think I would want to change usernames mid-thread - which as I’m sure you know is both against MN rules and impossible to do - but thankfully I don’t have to engage with you again on this thread.

Love this! 😂👏

Cloudyday23 · 01/06/2025 18:05

I came back from my afternoon in town and observed many denim jackets being worn by (I'm not bothering to include the men) everyone from little girls to older ladies like myself. I don't think I saw two jackets the same. Such a variety of styles/lengths/shades and added extras to make them just a little different. They all imo looked good with whatever the wearer chose to team them with. Mine was worn with a black vest top and black straight leg trousers. Footwear was canvas lace ups in pink from the cheap shoe shop because they're SO comfortable. 😃

I wasn't aware anyone was looking at me as though my style was ridiculous.

Octopusespunchforfun · 02/06/2025 17:36

This thread has taken a turn! But you know what they say, never discuss religion, politics, money … or classic denim jackets 😄

henlake7 · 02/06/2025 19:23

Thing is Ive yet to see an alternative that looks as good as a decently fitting denim jacket.
Lots of good suggestions that might work with an outfit or two but your basic denim jacket seems to go with almost anything! I dont want to have to buy 14 different jackets to match my outfits, Id rather just chuck a denim jacket on and run the risk of looking old!
